Do you have a question about the Tensai TD-860B and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document provides service data for the TD-860B record player, including specifications, disassembly instructions, adjustments, maintenance, troubleshooting, a schematic diagram, an exploded view, and a parts list.

The TD-860B is a 2-speed, belt-drive auto-return record player. Its turntable platter is 300mm in diameter and made of aluminum alloy diecast. It is driven by a single 4-pole synchronous motor. The device operates on AC 220V 50Hz 10W or 240V 50Hz 10W. It supports two speeds: 33-1/3 rpm and 45 rpm. Key performance specifications include a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N Ratio) of 60dB and a Wow & Flutter of 0.08% (WRMS). The pickup arm is a static-balanced tubular type with an arm length of 215mm and an overhang of 10mm. Standard accessories include a 45 r.p.m. adapter, oil, and operating instructions. The unit's dimensions are 429 (W) x 366 (D) x 148 (H) mm, and it weighs 5Kg (net).

Disassembly Instructions:

To remove the dust cover, open it and slide the hinge as illustrated in Figure 1. For bottom board removal, unscrew the eight screws on the bottom board and detach the assembly. Servicing can then be performed from the bottom of the unit.

To remove the drive belt (Figure 2), first remove the rubber mat. Disengage the belt from the belt guide and motor pulley through the cutout in the turntable platter. Hold the belt with your finger through the cutout and pull the turntable platter up from the center shaft.

For belt replacement (Figure 3), hold the belt with your left thumb through the cutout in the turntable platter and place it on the inner drum. Carefully insert the turntable platter horizontally onto the center shaft, engaging the belt with the motor pulley, ensuring it is not twisted. Release your thumb from the belt, then engage the belt with the belt guide, and finally, replace the rubber mat.

Adjustments:

Arm lifter height adjustment (Figure 4): To adjust the stylus tip height during cueing, loosen the set screw of the arm lifter. Adjust the height so that the distance between the stylus tip and a record is approximately 8mm when a record is on the platter. Securely tighten the set screw after adjustment.

Motor pulley height adjustment (Figure 5): After replacing the motor or motor pulley, check its height. Align the center of the 33 rpm or 45 rpm pulley with the center of the belt guide (with the speed selector in corresponding positions), then tighten the mounting screw. The motor pulley should be approximately 2.5mm above the motor.

Auto-return adjustment (Figure 6): If the pickup arm moves up and performs auto-return prematurely, rotate adjusting screw C counterclockwise. If it returns before the end of the performance, rotate screw C clockwise.

Maintenance:

Whenever the turntable platter is serviced, it should be cleaned and lubricated. Lubrication (Figure 7): Remove the turntable platter as described in the "Removal of Belt" section. Apply three or four drops of oil to the point shown in Figure 7. Avoid contact with the pulley or belt during lubrication; if they become oily, wipe them clean with a soft cloth dipped in ethyl alcohol. Cleaning of Drive mechanism: Clean the motor pulley, belt, and inner drum of the turntable platter with a soft cloth dipped in ethyl alcohol. Dirt on these parts can cause wow, flutter, and rumble.

Troubleshooting Guide:

The guide covers common issues related to the turntable platter, motor, pickup arm, and sound.

  • Turntable Platter:
    • Slow rotation: Possible causes include oil or dirt on the belt causing slippage, a binding center shaft, or the belt touching the belt guide. Remedies involve cleaning the motor pulley and belt with alcohol, disassembling and cleaning the center shaft, and adjusting the motor pulley height.
    • Excessive variation of rotation: May be due to oil/dirt on the belt or a loose belt. Solutions include cleaning the motor pulley and belt, or replacing the belt.
    • Improper interchanging function of belt: Caused by oil/water on the driving mechanism or a loose belt. Remedies are similar to slow rotation.
  • Motor:
    • Motor does not rotate: Check power circuit leads, plug, and power switch. If the motor coil is open, shorted, or burned, replace the motor.
    • Abnormal high temperature of motor: Indicates poor insulation inside the motor, requiring replacement.
    • Slow rotation: Lack of lubrication. Remedy by lubricating.
  • Pickup Arm:
    • Stylus causes jumping or improper tracking: Can be due to light stylus pressure, a worn or damaged stylus, heavy horizontal movement of the pickup arm, external vibration, or the cartridge case touching the record surface. Remedies include adjusting stylus pressure, replacing the stylus, disassembling and cleaning the pickup arm shaft, installing the player in a vibration-free location, or adjusting stylus pressure for the specified value.
  • Sound:
    • No sound, or only from one channel: Possible causes are an open cartridge circuit, improper connection of the head shell and pickup arm, or an open lead/mis-wiring between the head shell and output cord. Remedies involve replacing the cartridge, correcting connections, cleaning connected parts, or replacing/correcting wiring for the pickup assembly.
    • Distorted sound: Due to a worn/damaged stylus, bent cantilever, or incorrect stylus pressure. Remedies include replacing the stylus or adjusting stylus pressure.
    • Rumble: Can be caused by the motor touching the motor sheet, oil/dirt on the belt, or the belt touching the belt guide. Solutions include ensuring the motor floats on its rubber cushion, cleaning the motor pulley, belt, and turntable with alcohol, and adjusting motor pulley height if necessary.
    • Wow: Caused by oil/dirt on the belt. Remedy by cleaning the motor pulley, belt, and turntable platter with alcohol.
    • Hum: Cartridge affected by magnetic fields or imperfect DIN plug connection. Remedies include keeping magnetic equipment away from the player and ensuring a perfect DIN plug connection.
    • Howling: Cartridge picks up vibration or sound pressure from the speaker. Remedy by installing the player on a rigid table or changing its location to minimize howling.

The document also includes a schematic diagram for 220V/50Hz and 240V/50Hz models, detailing the wiring of the AC power, micro switch, and motor. An exploded view provides a visual breakdown of all components, each identified by a key number, which corresponds to the parts list. The parts list provides the key number, part number, and a description for each component, from the cabinet and bottom board to specific screws, springs, and electronic components like capacitors and resistors.
