Do you have a question about the The Handy THPLT-A and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in this manual is a Petrol Line Trimmer, model THPLT-A, manufactured by Handy Distribution Ltd. It is designed for trimming grass and light vegetation, offering a portable and powerful solution for garden maintenance.

Function Description

The petrol line trimmer operates using a 2-stroke engine that powers a rotating line head. The line, typically made of nylon, cuts through grass and weeds as it spins at high speed. The bent shaft design is common for line trimmers, providing a comfortable angle for trimming along edges and in various garden areas. The bump feed mechanism allows the user to extend the cutting line by tapping the spool head on the ground, making it convenient for continuous operation.

Important Technical Specifications

The THPLT-A model boasts several key specifications that define its performance and capabilities:

  • Engine: 2-stroke, with an engine displacement of 25.4 cm³.
  • Fuel Type: Unleaded petrol mixed with 2-stroke oil at a ratio of 25:1 (or as per oil maker's ratio for synthetic/semi-synthetic oils).
  • Fuel Tank Capacity: 0.6 liters.
  • Max Output Power: 0.75 Kw at 7800 min⁻¹.
  • Max Engine Speed: 7800 min.
  • Max Engine Idling Speed: 3200/min.
  • Min Clutch Engagement Speed: 4200/min.
  • Cutting Diameter: 381mm, providing a good cutting width for efficient trimming.
  • Spool Type: Bump Feed, twin line.
  • Line Diameter: 2mm.
  • Line Length: 2mm x 3m (total length of line supplied).
  • Net Weight (Empty Tank): 4.7 Kg, making it relatively lightweight for extended use.
  • Declared Sound Power Level: 108 dB(A).
  • Vibration: 8m/s².
  • Gear Ratio: 1:1.
  • Equivalent Spark Plug: TORCH L7RTC.
  • Bore and Stroke: 34 x 28mm.
  • Fuel Consumption at Max Engine Speed: 569g/kw.h.
  • Special Fuel Consumption at Max Engine Speed: 0.56 Kg/h.

These specifications indicate a robust and efficient tool suitable for typical domestic garden tasks. The engine's power output and cutting diameter ensure effective trimming, while the relatively low weight contributes to user comfort.

Usage Features

The manual outlines several features related to the assembly and operation of the line trimmer:

  • Assembly:

    • Loop Handle: The loop handle is disassembled for shipping and needs to be attached to the upper shaft, securing it with four screws, washers, and nuts.
    • Shoulder Harness: The shoulder harness is designed to connect to the harness eye on the upper shaft, providing support and comfort during operation.
    • Bent Shaft: The power unit connects to the bent shaft via a coupler device. The lower handle locks into position, and the shafts are secured by aligning the button with the guide recess and rotating the lower shaft until the button locks.
    • Shield: The shield slides onto the attachment shaft and is fixed with a bolt, bracket, nut, and washer. It's crucial to remove the protective packaging from the line cut-off blade on the shield.
    • Throttle Cable: The throttle cable needs to be adjusted so that the normal play is 1 or 2 mm when measured at the carburettor side end. If there's too much play, the air cleaner cover needs to be loosened to adjust.
  • Operation:

    • Starting: The starting procedure involves placing the machine on the floor, moving the ignition switch to "on," moving the choke lever to "start" (for cold start), pushing the primer bulb 10 times, squeezing the safety lever and throttle, pushing the throttle lock button, and pulling the recoil starter 2-3 times until the engine fires. For warm starts, the choke lever and primer bulb steps can be skipped. The engine should idle for about 10 seconds to warm up.
    • Stopping: To stop the trimmer, release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to idle, then move the ignition switch to "off." It's important to note that the blade/spool will continue to rotate for a few seconds after the engine stops.
    • Initial Use: During the first 10 hours, the engine should be run at a moderate speed. After the first 2 hours, all nuts, bolts, and screws should be securely tightened.
    • Trimming Technique: The unit should always be positioned on the operator's right side to avoid exposure to exhaust and hot surfaces. It should be held with both hands, with the right hand on the rear handle and the left on the loop handle, at hip height. For tall grass, it's recommended to cut from the top down to prevent grass from wrapping around the shaft housing and string head, which can cause overheating. If grass becomes entangled, the engine should be stopped, the spark plug wire disconnected, and the grass removed.
    • Fueling: Petrol is highly flammable, so fueling should be done away from flames, sparks, or smoking, and the engine should be allowed to cool. The fuel tank should be filled to 80% capacity, and any spillage wiped up. Stored fuel mixture should be clearly marked and used within 4-6 weeks. For long-term storage, the fuel tank and carburettor should be drained.
  • Line and Spool Replacement:

    • To replace the line or spool: Stop the engine, lay the trimmer on the floor, and remove the bump knob/retaining cap by turning it anti-clockwise. Remove the empty spool and clean the head.
    • To reload the spool with line: Cut two lengths of spare line (3 meters each). Insert each line into the two holes in the centre of the spool, and wind the line in the direction of the arrow on the spool, keeping the line tight. Leave about 15cm of line unwound and secure the lines into the slots on the tabs. Insert the lines into the eyelets on the trimmer head. Place the spool on the drive shaft, release the lines by sharply pulling each line, push down on the spool to reveal the drive shaft, and then place the bump knob/retaining cap onto the drive shaft, securing it by turning it clockwise.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the line trimmer. The manual highlights several key maintenance tasks:

  • Air Filter:
    • Accumulated dust in the air filter reduces engine efficiency.
    • The filter should be removed and cleaned regularly to ensure optimum performance.
    • To clean, remove the cover by pressing in the sides, lift it off, and tap the filter to remove light surface dust.
    • Heavy deposits should be washed out in soapy water and allowed to dry completely.
  • Fuel Filter:
    • The fuel filter should be checked periodically to ensure no dust enters the fuel tank.
    • The fuel tank is fitted with a filter that can be extracted using a piece of hooked wire.
    • If the filter is dirty, it should be replaced.
    • If the inside of the fuel tank is dirty, it should be rinsed out with petrol.
  • Spark Plug:
    • The spark plug should be checked after every 10-15 hours of use.
    • Remove the spark plug cover.
    • Using the plug spanner supplied, remove the spark plug by turning it anti-clockwise.
    • Clean and adjust the gap to 0.6-0.7mm.
    • Replace the spark plug if it is damaged or visibly worn.
    • Install the new/cleaned spark plug to finger tightness, then tighten fully with the spanner.
  • Servicing:
    • It is recommended that the petrol line trimmer be serviced after 15 hours of use and thereafter every 2 years.

These maintenance steps are designed to keep the engine running smoothly, prevent common issues, and extend the overall lifespan of the device. Adhering to the fuel mixture guidelines and storage recommendations is also vital for proper care.
