Safety Instructions:
The manual emphasizes precautions to avoid exposure to excessive microwave energy, including not operating the oven with the door open, not tampering with safety interlocks, and ensuring the oven door closes properly without damage. It also provides general microwave safety instructions, such as not operating the oven empty, not drying clothes or newspapers, and not using recycled paper products unless labeled safe. The importance of using potholders and not storing flammable materials in or near the oven is highlighted. Specific warnings are given for certain food items like whole eggs, narrow-neck bottles, and sealed containers, which may explode if heated.
Cookware and Utensil Guide:
A detailed guide outlines which materials are safe for microwave use (e.g., microwave-safe glass, ceramic, plastic wrap) and which are not (e.g., metal bakeware, brown paper bags, metal twist-ties). It also includes a "Container Test" to determine if a container is microwave-safe.
Cooking Techniques:
The manual provides guidance on various cooking techniques and food characteristics that affect microwave cooking:
- Bone and Fat: Affect cooking uniformity; thin areas near bones may overcook.
- Density: Porous foods cook faster than dense foods.
- Quantity: More food requires longer cooking times.
- Shape: Uniform shapes cook more evenly; irregular shapes should have thin parts towards the center.
- Size: Thin pieces cook faster than thick pieces.
- Starting Temperature: Room temperature foods cook faster than chilled or frozen ones.
- Piercing: Foods with skins or membranes must be pierced to allow steam to escape.
- Browning: Microwave ovens do not brown food like conventional ovens; browning sauces or spices can be used.
- Spacing: Individual foods cook more evenly when spaced apart in a circular pattern.
- Covering: Used to retain moisture and prevent spattering; plastic wrap should be vented.
- Shielding: Aluminum foil strips can be used to prevent overcooking thin areas of meat.
- Timing: Recipes provide a time range; always cook for the minimum time and check for doneness.
- Stirring: Often necessary for even cooking; cooked edges should be moved to the center.
- Rearranging: Small items should be rearranged from edge to center for even cooking.
- Turning: Large foods like roasts or turkeys should be turned halfway through cooking.
- Stand Time: Most foods continue to cook after the microwave is off; necessary for complete cooking to the center.
- Testing for Doneness: Use conventional methods (fork-tender, clear juices, flaking fish).
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning:
- Before Cleaning: Unplug the oven or leave the door open.
- Inside of the oven: Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasives.
- Glass Tray: Remove and wash in warm, soapy water or a dishwasher.
- Outside oven surfaces: Clean with a damp cloth. Prevent water from seeping into ventilation openings.
- Menu Label: Wipe with a damp cloth; do not remove.
- Control Panel: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth if wet. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasives. A removable protective film is present during shipping.
- Roller Ring and oven cavity floor: Wipe with mild detergent water or window cleaner. Roller Ring can be washed in soapy water or a dishwasher. Keep these areas clean to avoid excessive noise.
- Oven Door: Wipe with a soft cloth when steam accumulates. The inside surface has a heat and vapor barrier film that should not be removed.
