Overview

This document is an owner's manual and safety instructions for a Thunderbolt Foldable Solar Panel, available in two models: a 9-watt version (Item 57970) and an 18-watt version (Item 57968).

Function Description:

The Thunderbolt Foldable Solar Panel is designed to convert sunlight into electrical energy, primarily for charging small electronic devices via a USB output. It is a portable and compact solution for off-grid power generation. The foldable design enhances its portability and ease of storage. The panels are equipped with grommets for hanging and an integrated stand for ground placement, allowing users to optimize their exposure to sunlight.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models:
    • 9-watt model (Item 57970):
      • Panel Rated Output: 0.8A, 9W
      • USB Rated Output: 5VDC, 1.4A
      • Panel Size (unfolded): 15.125" L x 9.666" W x 0.7265" D
      • Panel Size (folded): 7.5" L x 9.666" W x 0.93" D
      • Number of Solar Panels: 2
    • 18-watt model (Item 57968):
      • Panel Rated Output: 2A, 18W
      • USB Rated Output: 5VDC, 2.4A
      • Panel Size (unfolded): 30.4" L x 9.6" W x 0.6" D
      • Panel Size (folded): 9.6" L x 7.6" W x 1.2" D
      • Number of Solar Panels: 4
  • General:
    • Output ratings should be increased by 25% when determining component required voltage and amperage ratings, as the product may occasionally produce more current/voltage than its rated output (refer to NEC Section 690-8).
    • Output can be affected by factors such as panel temperature (decreases above ~70°F), angle, solar intensity, and cloud cover.

Usage Features:

  • Portability: The foldable design makes the solar panel compact and easy to transport and store.
  • Flexible Placement: Can be placed on the ground using its integrated stand or hung using ropes threaded through the grommets.
  • Optimal Sun Exposure: Users are advised to select a location where the panel faces the sun without shadows and to angle the panel towards true south (or true north in the southern hemisphere) according to a provided latitude-based chart for maximum efficiency.
  • Charging: Connect devices to the USB output using the included USB cable.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Install sensitive electrical components (wiring, regulator, battery) in a weatherproof enclosure to prevent electric shock.
    • Do not wire multiple panels in series without a qualified electrician or regulator.
    • Not designed for grid tie-in; grid tie-in systems require professional design and installation to meet codes and prevent hazards.
    • Avoid applying pressure or pressing down on the folded solar charger.
    • Do not focus light on the panel.
    • Always use with a proper regulator, inverter, and/or charge controller when connecting to a battery or power grid.
    • Securely hang the panel to prevent movement in windy conditions.
    • Verify that hanging ropes can support the panel's weight.
    • Store the folded solar panel and USB cable in a dry location out of reach of children.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Solar panels should be cleaned and inspected monthly, or more frequently, to maintain peak efficiency.
  • Cleaning Procedure:
    • Wear electrically insulated gloves and ANSI-approved safety goggles.
    • Ensure solar panels and USB cable are thoroughly dry.
    • Disconnect any item being charged before cleaning.
    • Clean panels one at a time with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser, soft cloth, and paper towels. Avoid brushes or abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspection:
    • Before each use, inspect for damage, loose parts, water inside housing, cracked or damaged electrical insulation, or loose connections.
    • Do not use a damaged solar panel or if cable insulation is damaged/weathered, or housing is opened.
  • Efficiency Adjustment:
    • In winter, increase the panel's angle by 10° to the recommended angle.
    • In summer, decrease the angle by up to 10° from the recommended angle.
    • In spring and fall, maintain the angle recommended on Page 4.
  • Product Labels: Maintain product labels and nameplates for important safety information. Contact Harbor Freight Tools for replacements if unreadable or missing.
  • Servicing: Procedures not specifically explained in the manual must be performed only by a qualified technician.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a Limited 90 Day Warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty does not cover damage from misuse, abuse, negligence, accidents, unauthorized repairs, improper installation, normal wear and tear, or lack of maintenance.
