the outside of the screen. these icons represent all of the different activities
that allow you to interact with YODA.

you. if he is in need, he will make noise and the ALERT icon will
light up.
as part of your training, you've got to figure out what YODA needs!

sometimes it's hard to tell when YODA needs to sleep. if you have tried

a little nap.

and ALTER your environment with the force. YODA has created three
activities to help you learn. each activity is done five times.

symbols randomly on the screen, then suddenly
stop and beep. you must press the ENTER button
as quickly as possible when he beeps. the sooner
you press the ENTER button, the more impressed
YODA will be. but be careful, if you press before
he signals, he will be very unhappy with your
impatience!

the middle. on the left side is a symbol, the right
side has a symbol that YODA has hidden from
you. you must use the LEFT/RIGHT buttons

Overview

This document describes the "Giga Pets" device, a handheld electronic pet game that immerses players in the Star Wars universe. The device functions as an interactive friend, specifically a digital representation of Yoda, the Jedi Master. The primary function is to care for Yoda, ensuring his health and happiness, while also engaging in Jedi training activities. The game's objective is to achieve a high score by diligently attending to Yoda's needs and successfully completing training exercises, ultimately aiming to become a Jedi Knight or Master.

Function Description

The Giga Pets device simulates the daily life and training of Yoda, requiring continuous interaction from the player. The core function revolves around a "Game Screen" which serves as Yoda's "home." On this screen, Yoda moves around, performing his daily routine as a Jedi Master. The player interacts with Yoda through a series of icons displayed around the screen's perimeter, each representing a different activity or need.

The device's central function is to keep Yoda "happy and healthy." Yoda will periodically signal his needs by making noise and illuminating an "ALERT" icon. The player's task is to decipher Yoda's needs and respond appropriately. For instance, if Yoda is hungry, the player must provide food; if his hut is dirty, it needs to be cleaned. The game emphasizes quick and accurate responses to Yoda's signals.

A key aspect of the game's function is the "SCORE" system, which ranges from 0 (bad) to 100 (perfect). This score reflects the player's performance in caring for Yoda and completing training activities. A higher score indicates better care and successful training, while neglecting duties or failing training will decrease the score. The game can end if the score drops to zero, leading to Yoda dismissing the player as an apprentice. Conversely, if the player maintains a high score (above 95 points) after 14 days of training, Yoda may continue to teach, extending the game.

Beyond basic care, the device incorporates a "TRAIN" function, designed to teach the player "the ways of the force." This training is divided into three activities: "CONTROL," "SENSE," and "ALTER," each to be performed five times.

  • CONTROL: This activity involves pressing the ENTER button as quickly as possible when Yoda flashes symbols and beeps. Timely responses impress Yoda, while premature presses displease him.
  • SENSE: In this activity, the screen is divided, with a symbol on the left and a hidden symbol on the right. The player must scroll through three symbols on the left using the LEFT/RIGHT buttons and select the one that matches the hidden symbol on the right. Matching symbols please Yoda, while mismatches indicate a lack of concentration.
  • ALTER: This activity requires the player to quickly alternate LEFT and RIGHT button presses to "lift objects in the air." Successful and rapid alternation raises the object, pleasing Yoda, while mistakes cause the object to fall, requiring another attempt.

The device also includes an "ASK" function, allowing players to pose questions or concerns about their Jedi training, with Yoda providing answers. The "TEACH" function enables Yoda to offer advice on the ways of the force.

Usage Features

The Giga Pets device is designed for portability and continuous play. Once activated by pulling a plastic tab, the device remains on, eliminating the need to turn it off.

Initial Setup:

  • Setting the Clock: Upon first activation, the device enters "CLOCK MODE." The player must set the correct hour and minutes using the LEFT/RIGHT buttons and confirming with ENTER. Accurate time setting is crucial as Yoda's eating, playing, and sleeping schedule is based on it.
  • Entering Your Name: After setting the clock, the device enters "NAME MODE." A flashing bar appears, and the player uses LEFT/RIGHT to scroll through the alphabet, selecting letters with ENTER to form a name (up to 12 letters). Confirming the name twice with ENTER returns the player to "GAME MODE."
  • Turning Off/On Sound: The sound can be toggled by entering "CLOCK MODE" (pressing MODE until the clock appears), then pressing LEFT to turn sound off or RIGHT to turn sound on. Pressing MODE again returns to "GAME MODE."

Game Interaction:

  • Navigation: The LEFT/RIGHT keys are used to select different icons on the game screen, representing various activities. The ENTER button confirms selections.
  • Food: When selecting the "FOOD" icon, the player chooses between "healthy food" (soup) or "snacks" (food sticks) for Yoda using LEFT/RIGHT. Yoda's hunger level is indicated by a "HUNGER" meter on the "SCORE" screen (100 means full, 0 means famished). Yoda may refuse food if full or refuse other activities if famished.
  • Sleep: The "SLEEP" icon is used to turn out the light when Yoda wants to sleep, whether for a nap during the day or for a full night's rest. This helps Yoda have good dreams. If Yoda seems upset after feeding and cleaning, a nap might be needed.
  • Cleaning: The "CLEANING" icon is used to clean Yoda's hut, contributing to his peace of mind and the player's score.
  • Alerts: The "ALERT" icon lights up when Yoda needs attention, prompting the player to quickly identify and address his needs.
  • Refusal: If the player selects an activity Yoda doesn't want to do, he may refuse, requiring the player to try a different activity.

Game End and Restart:

  • Game Over: The game ends if the score drops to zero (Yoda dismisses the player) or if the player successfully completes Jedi training after 14 days. Upon game end, the player receives a title (Jedi, Jedi Knight, or Jedi Master) based on their performance.
  • Restarting: The game can be restarted from the beginning by pressing the ENTER button on the front or the RESET button on the back of the device.

Battery Installation:

  • The device uses two 1.5V "LR44" or "G13A" button cell batteries. To install, the battery compartment cover on the back of the device must be removed by unscrewing it and pushing it in the direction of the arrow. Batteries must be aligned correctly (+ and -).

Maintenance Features

The manual provides specific guidelines for battery maintenance to ensure proper device function:

  • Battery Replacement: Batteries should be replaced by an adult.
  • Mixing Batteries: Do not mix old and new batteries, nor alkaline, standard, or rechargeable batteries.
  • Rechargeable Batteries: Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged. Rechargeable batteries must be removed from the toy before charging and should only be charged under adult supervision.
  • Battery Type: Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended should be used.
  • Polarity: Batteries must be inserted with the correct polarity.
  • Exhausted Batteries: Exhausted batteries must be removed from the toy.
  • Short-Circuits: The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.

Defect or Damage:

In case of a damaged part or missing component, the manual advises against returning the game to the store. Instead, players should write to Tiger Electronic Toys Repair Centre, providing the game's name, model number, a brief description of the problem, sales slip date, place of purchase, and price paid.
