Overview

The Lights Out 2000 is an electronic puzzle game designed for ages 9 and up, offering a variety of game modes and challenges. The primary objective across most game modes is to turn off all the lights on a 5x5 grid in the minimum number of moves. The game features a unique "cross-shaped effect pattern" where pressing a button not only changes the state of that button's light but also the lights of its immediate neighbors (up, down, left, and right). This core mechanic is central to solving the puzzles.

Function Description

The device features a 5x5 grid of buttons, each with an LED light that can display different colors depending on the game mode. A keypad with dedicated buttons for "ON/OFF," "START," "SELECT," "HELP/SCORE," and "SOUND" controls the game.

  • ON/OFF Button: Turns the game unit on or off. The unit automatically shuts off after three minutes of inactivity to conserve battery.
  • START Button: Initiates a game, confirms selected puzzle numbers, confirms input puzzles, and restarts the current game.
  • SELECT Button: Allows players to choose between different game types (3-Color, Action, 2-Player, or Classic) and game modes (Mode 1: Pre-Programmed, Mode 2: Random, Mode 3: Insert Puzzle). It also allows exiting the current game.
  • HELP/SCORE Button: Provides hints from the computer in certain game modes, displays maximum scores, Score IDs, and authentication codes in the Action game, and shows the current score in the Action game.
  • SOUND Button: Toggles the game sound on or off.

The Lights Out 2000 offers four main game types:

  1. Game 1: 3-Color Puzzles: This is an updated version of the classic Lights Out game, introducing color variables.

    • Mode 1 (Pre-Programmed): Contains 100 pre-computed puzzles across 4 difficulty levels, ranging from 5-step to 24-step solutions. The game saves progress, allowing players to continue from where they left off. Players can select previous puzzles they've already beaten.
    • Mode 2 (Random): Puzzles are generated randomly by the computer. The difficulty of these puzzles is determined by the player's performance in Mode 1.
    • Mode 3 (Insert Puzzle): Players can create their own puzzles by pressing any number of keys to set up the lights. The game checks if the created puzzle is solvable; an error tone indicates an unsolvable puzzle. This mode is ideal for two players to challenge each other.
  2. Game 2: Action Game: The objective is to quickly turn off lights that the computer randomly turns on. The lights turn on faster and faster, and the game ends if 18 or more lights are on the board simultaneously. The game starts in CLASSIC style with red lights, which can be turned off using the effect pattern. Scoring is based on how many lights are turned off or on with each key press. Turning off more lights yields higher scores, while turning on lights results in point deductions. Orange lights occasionally appear, offering bonus points if turned off quickly. Clearing all lights on the board provides a 500-point bonus. The game features a high score verification system, displaying maximum score, Score ID, and an authentication code.

  3. Game 3: 2-Player Game: Designed for two players, one playing RED and the other GREEN. The goal is to control more "spaces" (lights) on the board than the opponent. The game begins with randomly placed initial squares for both players. Players take turns, with the current player's color flashing. An invalid key press results in an error sound. A player loses when their color cannot claim another space. A match consists of 6 games, and players maintain their color throughout. If a draw occurs after 6 games, play continues until one player leads by 2 points, up to a maximum of 16 games. The computer displays the winner and match score at the end of each game.

  4. Game 4: Classic Lights Out (2-Color Lights Out Game): This game plays identically to the 3-Color game, but lights only have two states: ON or OFF (no intermediate Green state).

    • Mode 1 (Pre-Computed Puzzles): Features 50 pre-computed puzzles, increasing in difficulty from 6 to 15 steps. This mode includes HELP and PUZZLE SELECT functions similar to Game 1, Mode 1.
    • Mode 2: Similar to Game 1, Mode 2, where puzzle difficulty is based on achievements in Mode 1.
    • Mode 3: Functions the same as Game 1, Mode 3, allowing players to create their own puzzles.

Usage Features

  • Quick Start: Press ON, observe the light-chase and cross-shaped effect patterns, then press START to begin playing immediately.
  • Puzzle Selection: In Pre-Programmed modes, players can select specific puzzles. For the first 25 puzzles, simply press the corresponding number button and then START. For puzzles beyond #25, each press of a number key adds 25 to the puzzle number (e.g., #7 pressed twice for puzzle #32).
  • Help Functionality: In certain modes (Game 1, Mode 1, and Game 4, Mode 1), the HELP button provides the first two steps of a solution for the initial 25 puzzles. No help is provided for later puzzles or in the middle of a game.
  • Scoring and Feedback: In the Action game, scores are displayed digitally. Achieving minimum moves in puzzle modes results in "HOME-RUN" lights and sounds. Clearing the board with excess steps will light up the grid to indicate the number of extra moves taken.
  • Game Progression: Successfully completing a puzzle in Pre-Programmed modes advances the player to the next, more difficult puzzle.
  • Sound Control: The SOUND button allows players to turn game sounds on or off.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Installation: The device requires three "AA"/LR6 batteries (not included). An adult should open the battery compartment cover, located at the back of the game, and insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and - alignment).
  • Battery Precautions:
    • Do not mix old and new batteries.
    • Do not mix alkaline, standard, or rechargeable batteries.
    • Battery installation should be performed by an adult.
    • Non-rechargeable batteries must not be recharged.
    • Rechargeable batteries should be removed from the toy before charging (if removable).
    • Rechargeable batteries should only be charged under adult supervision.
    • Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended should be used.
    • Batteries must be inserted with the correct polarity.
    • Exhausted batteries should be removed from the toy.
    • The supply terminals should not be short-circuited.
    • Replace with new batteries at the first sign of erratic operation.
  • Cleaning: The unit should only be cleaned with a piece of soft, dry cloth.
  • Environmental Care: Avoid exposing the unit to high temperatures or direct sunlight, as this can damage the device.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: If a part of the game is damaged or missing, do not return it to the store. Instead, contact the Tiger Repair Department with details of the problem, including the game's name, model number, sales slip information (date, place of purchase, price paid), and your contact information.
  • Warranty: The device comes with a 90-day limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship from the date of original purchase. Damages from accident, negligence, improper service, or misuse are not covered. During the warranty period, the product will be repaired or replaced at Tiger's option. After 90 days but within one year of purchase, repairs or replacements are available for a service fee.
