This document describes the Giga Pets Explorer, an interactive TV game designed for single players aged 7 and up. The game transforms your TV into "Giga Island," where players care for a virtual pet, explore, decorate its home, collect items, develop its personality, make friends, learn tricks, and embark on quests.
Function Description:
The Giga Pets Explorer is a console-based video game that connects to a television, VCR, or DVD player with AV input. Players choose a virtual pet (pooch, panda, or monkey), name it, and select its home. The core gameplay revolves around nurturing the pet, managing its needs (hunger, hygiene, health, mood, sleepiness), and guiding it through various activities on Giga Island. The game features a "Main Menu" for starting new games, loading saved games, and adjusting options like music, volume, and tutorial hints. A "Menu" bar provides access to pet stats, inventory ("Stuff"), feeding, cleaning, healing, trick performance, and returning home. The game also supports connectivity with handheld Giga Pets games (sold separately), allowing mini pets to visit the TV game and trade items.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Power: Requires four AA-size alkaline batteries (not included). A Phillips/cross head screwdriver is needed for battery insertion.
- Connectivity: Connects to a TV, VCR, or DVD player via AV input (white audio plug, yellow video plug). An RF adapter is required if the TV lacks AV input. The game cannot be played through a cable box or satellite hookup and must be connected directly to the TV, VCR, or DVD player.
- Safety: Not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts (choking hazard). It is a Class 1 LED product.
- FCC Compliance: Tested and found to comply with Class B digital device limits under part 15 of the FCC Rules, designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation.
- Automatic Shutoff: The game turns off automatically after ten minutes of non-use.
Usage Features:
- Pet Care: Players must keep their pet happy and healthy by feeding it, ensuring it takes naps when tired, cleaning it when dirty, and healing it when sick. The type and quantity of food affect hunger and health. Specific medicines are available for different ailments.
- Exploration and Quests: Pets can explore Giga Island, complete quests given by characters (like the Mayor) to unlock new locations, gather objects, or buy items. Some quests have time limits.
- Personality Development: Pet personalities are shaped by collecting "personality icons":
- Halos: Indicate good behavior, leading to a nicer pet that makes friends with other nice pets.
- Pitchforks: Indicate mischievous behavior, leading to a naughtier pet that makes friends with other naughty pets.
- Lightbulbs: Indicate intelligence, leading to a smarter pet that learns tricks more easily and has an advantage in mini-games.
- Stars: Indicate attractiveness, leading to a better-looking pet that receives more generous gifts from friends.
- Tricks: Pets can learn tricks from animal friends by solving puzzles. Once learned, tricks can be performed.
- Shopping and Selling: Players collect "Bucks" (the in-game currency) to buy food, toys, decorating items, and medicine from shops. Items can also be sold in the junkyard in the jungle.
- Gifting: Players can give gifts from their inventory to other pets or characters as part of quests.
- Navigation: Directional buttons (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT) are used to move around Giga Island and scroll through menus. The SELECT button is used for actions like choosing menu options, digging, interacting with characters, picking up items, or investigating. The MENU button brings up the menu bar or sub-menus within the inventory. The BACK button exits selected options.
- Handheld Giga Pets Connectivity: Compatible handheld Giga Pets games can be docked with the TV game unit. Handheld pets ("mini pets") can visit the TV pet, allowing for item trading and access to Mystery Island (a location only accessible with a mini pet). Personality icons collected by the TV pet are copied to the mini pet, and the TV pet's condition (dirty, sick, clean, healed) affects the mini pet's condition.
Maintenance Features:
- Battery Replacement: Batteries should be replaced by an adult, ensuring correct polarity. Old and new batteries, or different types of batteries (alkaline, standard, rechargeable), should not be mixed. Weak or dead batteries should be removed. Rechargeable batteries should be removed before recharging and recharged under adult supervision.
- Troubleshooting:
- If the game doesn't appear on screen, check that video and audio plugs are correctly inserted, batteries are fresh, and the TV is set to the correct auxiliary channel (e.g., "AUX," "AV," "Video").
- If the game malfunctions or "locks up," reset the unit by sliding the ON/OFF switch to OFF and then back to ON. Removing and re-inserting batteries can also resolve issues.
- In case of local electrical interference, move the product away from other electrical equipment.
- If connecting a handheld unit, ensure the ZAP button is pressed before disconnecting to avoid data loss.
- Disposal: The product must be disposed of separately at a local waste recycling center, not in a household waste bin.
