Do not operate the unit for an extended period of time
with the sound distorting. This is an indication of a
malfunction, which in turn can cause heat to generate
and result in a fire.
Do not stand or sit on, nor hang down from the unit as
this may cause it to fall down or drop, resulting in
personal injury and/or property damage.
Have the unit checked periodically by the shop from
where it was purchased. Failure to do so may result in
corrosion or damage to the unit or its mounting bracket
that could cause the unit to fall, possibly causing
personal injury.

Overview

The TOA FB-120B/W is a compact, indoor-use subwoofer system designed to enhance low-frequency sound reproduction. It is equipped with a high-power 30 cm (12") woofer and is intended for use in conjunction with TOA's HX-5 series or other full-range speakers. This subwoofer is suitable for both permanent and temporary installations, offering dynamic low-frequency sound.

Function Description:

The primary function of the FB-120B/W is to reproduce low-frequency sound, complementing full-range speaker systems. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with other TOA speaker series, particularly the HX-5, to create a more complete and impactful audio experience. The system inherently suppresses mid- to high-frequency ranges, but for even greater efficiency, a low-pass filter can be added using a digital signal processor. Recommended filter settings for optimal performance include an HPF (12 dB/oct) at 40 Hz with a Q of 2.053, and an LPF BW (24 dB/oct) at 100 Hz.

  • Acoustic Energy Optimization: The acoustic energy emitted from the speaker varies depending on the installation location. The manual provides guidance on how acoustic energy increases in different installation locations, referenced to a free sound field (ceiling suspension):
    • 4π space (Free sound field): +0 dB
    • 2π space (Semi-free sound field): +6 dB
    • π space (1/4 free sound field): +12 dB
    • π/2 space (1/8 free sound field): +18 dB
  • Level Balance and Polarity Adjustment: When used with full-range speakers, the level balance and polarity for each speaker should be adjusted independently based on the installation site.
    • Level Adjustment: Increase or decrease the subwoofer's level (or full-range speaker's level) as appropriate for the number of units and installation conditions.
    • Polarity Adjustment: Acoustic energy is added when the subwoofer and full-range speakers are in phase in their crossover band, and subtracted if they are in reversed phase. The manual recommends comparing the degree of acoustic energy increase by switching the polarity of the subwoofer connection (positive to negative and negative to positive) and choosing the connection that yields the greatest increase. For accurate polarity matching, actual measurements of acoustic energy using a real-time spectrum analyzer are recommended.
  • Cascade Configuration: Two speaker systems can be operated in parallel by connecting them in a cascade configuration. When doing so, ensure the speaker system is connected to a power amplifier's output terminal of 4 Ω or less to prevent amplifier failure.
  • Optional Products: The HY-PF1B (black) or HY-PF1W (white) Speaker Rigging Frame can be used to suspend the FB-120 subwoofer together with TOA HX-5 series speakers.
