Overview

The Topaz SigLite LCD 1x5 HID-USB (Model T-L460-HSB) is a signature capture device designed for electronic signature acquisition. This device features an interactive LCD screen that not only displays "electronic ink" under the pen tip in real-time during signing but also supports text, graphics, and pen-tap hotspots. These interactive elements allow users to navigate between screens, read agreements, and select preferred options before finalizing a transaction.

Function Description:

The primary function of the SigLite LCD 1x5 is to capture secure electronic signatures. It operates by allowing users to sign directly on its pressure-sensitive sensor surface using a specialized pen stylus. The device does not store signatures internally; instead, signatures are captured by software running on a connected computer. This makes it an ideal choice for applications requiring secure electronic signatures, such as in banking, pharmacy, insurance, medical, photo ID, and human resources, by reducing the need for paper documents and associated labor, storage, and material costs.

The device leverages standard Windows HID (Human Interface Device) drivers, enabling it to display interactive text and graphics, accept key-taps, and generate checkbox graphics. This functionality facilitates navigation through multiple display screens, enhancing the user experience by providing a dynamic and interactive signing process. The SigPlus electronic signature software, provided on an enclosed Topaz Software CD, enables versatile signature-capture operation across various Windows operating systems (Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, or XP). This software suite allows for the capture and storage of signatures as encrypted and bound electronic signatures or as image-free Topaz forensic ".sig" files.

Usage Features:

To use the SigLite LCD 1x5, it is crucial to install the SigPlus software before connecting the tablet. Once the software is installed, the USB plug can be inserted into the specified USB port. The tablet is hot-pluggable, meaning it can be connected and removed without restarting the host computer. Upon proper connection, the LCD screen will briefly display a "waterfall" of pixels, confirming its operational status. Users can test the installation by running the DemoOCX.exe program, clicking "START," and signing on the tablet. If a signature does not appear, users should verify the tablet settings (TabletModel=SigLiteLCD1X5, TabletType=6) in SigPlus, which can be adjusted via WIN\SigPlus.ini or the SigPlus Adjust utility.

When signing, users must use the supplied plastic pen stylus ONLY. The device's sensor surface is pressure-sensitive, and applying excessive pressure or using foreign objects like fingers or pencils can damage the tablet permanently. It is also important not to sign through a sheet or pad of paper, as the stylus must make direct contact with the sensor surface for accurate signature capture. Any intermediate object will result in an inaccurate signature or require more pressure than is acceptable, and signing with ink-tipped pens is explicitly discouraged.

The interactive LCD screen enhances usability by providing real-time visual feedback of the "electronic ink" as the user signs. Beyond simple signature capture, the ability to display text, graphics, and pen-tap hotspots allows for complex interactions, such as reviewing agreements, selecting options, and navigating through multiple screens within a single transaction. This makes the device suitable for scenarios where more than just a signature is required from the user.

Maintenance Features:

The SigLite LCD 1x5 is designed for durability, but proper handling is essential to maintain its performance. The pressure-sensitive sensor surface is delicate, and users must avoid applying excessive pressure or bringing any foreign objects into contact with it. Cuts, scratches, or other harm to the sensor membrane surface can impair the tablet's performance and potentially lead to complete failure.

For support and maintenance, all Topaz SigLite products come with a standard one-year limited warranty. Beyond this initial period, users can opt into the Perpetual Warranty program, which allows for the renewal of their tablet with a new data cable, pen, and plastic casing for a small fee. Tablets renewed under this program also receive a one-year warranty from the date of renewal.

Should a tablet require repair under warranty, renewal under Perpetual Warranty, or if replacement parts like pens or pen tips are needed, users can contact their local distributor or the Topaz factory. Technical support is available during business hours (Mon-Fri 9-5 p.m. PST) via phone or email for assistance with any operational issues. Software updates for SigPlus ActiveX are available for download at no charge from the Topaz website, ensuring that the device remains compatible with the latest system requirements and functionalities. The availability of various software plug-ins, demos, developer tools, and source examples on the Topaz website further supports ongoing maintenance and customization for users.
