Overview

This document serves as an owner-operator installation manual for the Torklift S9050A SpringLoad XL turnbuckle, a component designed to secure truck campers. Torklift International, with over 35 years of experience, emphasizes innovation, quality, and safety in its products.

Function Description:

The Torklift S9050A is a SpringLoad XL turnbuckle system designed to provide tension and secure a truck camper to a truck's tie-down points. The primary function of the SpringLoad XL turnbuckle is to create a secure connection between the camper's anchor points and the truck's frame-mounted tie-down points, preventing movement during transit. The "SpringLoad" aspect indicates that the turnbuckle incorporates a spring mechanism to absorb shock and allow for minor movement, which is crucial for protecting both the truck bed and the camper from damage caused by road conditions. The O-Ring Tension Indicator is a key feature, providing a visual cue to ensure the correct spring tension is applied, thereby optimizing safety and performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

The S9050A parts inventory includes:

  • 2 - SpringLoad XL Body
  • 2 - O-RING Tension Indicator
  • 2 - 1/2"-13 SS Hex Nut
  • 2 - 1/2" SS SAE Flat Washer
  • 2 - LONG HOOK BOLT

The turnbuckle is designed for applications requiring a 28"-32" (71-81cm) reach from anchor point to anchor point. The components are made of stainless steel, with the main body being a SpringLoad XL Body. The use of 1/2"-13 SS Hex Nuts and 1/2" SS SAE Flat Washers ensures a robust and corrosion-resistant connection. Torklift utilizes quality grade 304 stainless steel in its polished stainless steel products, known for its anti-corrosive properties.

Usage Features:

The installation process is straightforward, involving several steps:

  1. Step 1: Place an O-Ring onto the swivel hook at the top of the turnbuckle.
  2. Step 2: Thread one 1/2"-13 SS Hex Nut and one 1/2" SS SAE Flat Washer onto the end of the Long Hook Bolt.
  3. Step 3: Invert the SpringLoad XL Body, insert the Long Hook Bolt with the nut and washer into the bottom, and thread it onto the internal floating nut by spinning it clockwise. Confirm connection by pulling the hook bolt.
  4. Step 4: Lengthen the threaded rod as needed and install the turnbuckle. The Spring Hook attaches to the camper's anchor point, and the Long Hook Bolt attaches to the camper tie-down. For campers with eye bolts facing the front or rear, the FASTGUN TURNBUCKLE upper hook should be inserted down through the eye.
  5. Step 5: Twist the turnbuckle body until tension is felt.
  6. Step 6: Position the O-Ring against the turnbuckle body and tighten until the O-Ring is approximately 1/4" (6.35mm) from the body. This indicates correct spring tension.
  7. Step 7: Tighten the 1/2"-13 SS Hex Nut and 1/2" SS SAE Flat Washer against the bottom of the turnbuckle body using a wrench to prevent loosening.

A critical warning is "DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN," as this can lead to damage. The O-Ring acts as a visual indicator for proper tension, ensuring the turnbuckle is tight enough to secure the camper but not so tight as to cause undue stress.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides detailed instructions for the maintenance of both polished stainless steel and powder-coated steel products.

Polished Stainless Steel:

  • Torklift uses quality grade 304 stainless steel, known for its anti-corrosive properties. However, corrosion can occur in harsh environments (e.g., coastal regions, exposure to road chemicals).
  • For quick cleaning, WD40 and a cloth rag are recommended.
  • Occasional polishing with an approved stainless steel, chrome, or aluminum mag wheel polish cleaning product (available at automotive parts suppliers) is advised to maintain the attractive finish.

General Stainless Steel Care:

  • Stainless steel is an alloy with a minimum of 10.5-11% chromium, designed to resist corrosion but not stain-proof. Regular upkeep is necessary.
  • Avoid exposure to chlorides, which can cause corrosion.
  • Cleaning methods:
    1. Water and a cloth: For routine cleaning, use warm water and a cloth. Dry thoroughly to prevent water spots. Wipe in the direction of the polish lines.
    2. Mild detergent and cloth: For more powerful cleaning, use mild detergent (dishwashing liquid) and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry to prevent staining and spotting caused by minerals in water.
    3. Glass cleaner for fingerprints: For fingerprints, use glass cleaner or household ammonia. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.
    4. Stainless steel cleaner: For staining, scratching, or polishing, use a specialized stainless steel cleaner. Test in an inconspicuous spot, rinse thoroughly, and towel dry.

Powder Coated Steel:

  • Torklift products are sandblasted for maximum adhesion and use a high-quality industrial urethane-based powder coat.
  • Due to the extreme, harsh, undercar environment (consistent exposure to corrosive road chemicals like salt and road debris), Torklift does not warranty the powder-coated finish.
  • To minimize corrosion, regular cleaning and inspection of the powder-coated surface are recommended.
  • Touch up any affected areas with enamel or urethane-based aerosol paint.
  • For surface rust, aerosol spray rust converters can be used as preparation before paint application. These maintenance products are available at automotive parts suppliers.

Warnings and Recommendations:

  • Truck Bed and Camper Protection: Torklift advises against installing a camper on a plastic bed liner or other compressible material (like foam). These materials can act as a spring, increasing vertical camper movement and potentially causing the camper and liner to slide, which voids the warranty and may damage the truck bed and/or camper.
  • A rubber bed mat is recommended to protect the truck bed and camper, though it's not required to maintain the warranty.
  • Suspension: Torklift strongly recommends the StableLoad to reduce body roll, sag, and sway, improving safety and handling.
  • If the truck has suspension airbags, avoid over-pressurization, as this can lead to unsafe handling. Airbags used with StableLoads may allow operators to lower airbag pressure by 50% or more; only pressurize enough to level the truck.

Warranty Information:

Torklift International offers a limited lifetime warranty for its hitches, custom hitch receivers, frame-mounted tie-downs, turnbuckles, and accessories (excluding wire harnesses, which have a 90-day warranty) against defects in material and workmanship under normal use for the original consumer purchaser. Commercial applications are warranted for 90 days. Proof of purchase and pictures of any defective product are required for replacement. The warranty covers defective parts replacement only; labor charges, installation/replacement damage, and incidental/consequential damages are excluded. The finish or paint (rusting, cracking, peeling) is also excluded. Misuse, abuse, neglect, accident, improper installation, or commercial use voids the warranty.
