Overview

The Abu Garcia Toro™ Low Profile Reel is a highly advanced baitcasting reel designed for serious anglers, offering a combination of low-profile design, ultra-lightweight materials, and precision engineering for both freshwater and saltwater fishing conditions. It is part of the Toro™ family of baitcasters, which includes models like the MaxToro™, Revo® Toro™ S, Revo® Toro™ Rocket, and Revo® Toro™ Beast. These reels are known for their ergonomic design, increased line capacity, high maximum drag, and ability to handle larger baits.

Function Description:

The reel's primary function is to facilitate casting and retrieving fishing line with superior control and power. It features a sophisticated drag system, adjustable spool tension, and advanced braking systems to optimize casting performance and prevent backlashes. The reel is designed to be user-friendly, with clear instructions for line filling, drag adjustment, and maintenance.

Important Technical Specifications and Usage Features:

Line Compatibility:

The Toro™ low profile reels are compatible with monofilament, braided, and fluorocarbon lines. Anglers can choose line type based on personal preference and fishing conditions.

Line Filling:

To fill the spool, line should be passed through the line guide, secured with an arbor knot, and wound while maintaining tension. The spool should be filled to approximately 1/16" (1.5 mm) below the top lip for optimal performance, avoiding overfilling. For braided line, a monofilament backing can be added to prevent line slip, connected using a uni-to-uni knot, Albright knot, or similar.

Drag Adjustment:

The reel features a smooth and reliable drag system, controlled by an adjustment star located inside the reel handle. Rotating the star clockwise increases drag, while counterclockwise rotation decreases it. For best results, the drag should be set to approximately one-third of the line's breaking strength. This can be precisely adjusted by tying the line to a spring scale, with the reel mounted on a rod and line run through the guides. The drag should always release before the line reaches its breaking point. Drag settings above half of the line strength risk line breakage.

Spool Tension Knob:

The spool tension knob, located on the sideplate next to the handle, controls the spool's spin speed during casting. To adjust, hold the spool with your thumb, depress the thumb bar to disengage gears, and allow the lure to drop. If the lure doesn't fall, turn the knob counterclockwise to reduce tension. If the lure falls and the spool continues to rotate, tension is too loose, requiring a clockwise turn to increase tension. For beginners, tightening the spool tension knob by an extra ¼ to ½ turn can help prevent backlashes, gradually reducing tension as casting skills improve.

Braking Systems:

Toro™ reels incorporate highly tunable braking systems for superior casting control, designed to match lure weight and angler preference. Depending on the model, the reel may feature one of two systems:

  1. InfiniMax™ Brake System (Toro™ Rocket, Toro™ Beast): This is a dual brake system combining a sealed centrifugal brake with a magnetic brake, offering extensive adjustability.

    • Sealed Centrifugal Brake: Spring-loaded brake blocks engage by moving away from the spool's center due to centrifugal force during the initial cast, preventing overrun. As the spool slows, the blocks retract for maximum distance. These blocks are sealed within the plate to prevent loss. To adjust, remove the palm sideplate. Pins can be slid towards the spool's center to disengage (turn off) blocks or towards the outside to engage (turn on) them. Any combination of the six blocks can be engaged for more pressure or disengaged for less pressure and greater distance.
    • Linear Magnetic Brake: This adds consistent braking pressure throughout the cast. Turning the external dial towards "MAX" moves the magnetic system closer to the spool, increasing braking force and slowing rotation.
  2. MagTrax™ Brake (Toro™ S, MAX Toro™): This magnetic brake system provides consistent braking pressure for smooth, controlled casts. Turning the external dial towards "MAX" moves the magnetic system closer to the spool, increasing braking force and slowing rotation. The exterior brake dial allows for fine-tuning spool tension.

Casting Technique:

  1. Depress the thumb bar, keeping the thumb on the spool to control the lure. Hold the rod and reel with the handle pointing upward.
  2. Bring the rod backward so the tip is above and behind the shoulder. Cast by bringing the rod forward in a single, continuous motion.
  3. Release the thumb from the spool as the lure launches slightly upward and outward towards the target. Stop the spool with your thumb as the lure hits the water to prevent backlashes (bird's nest).

Maintenance Features:

Regular Maintenance:

Like any precision product, Toro™ reels require regular maintenance. After each use, gently rinse the reel with fresh water, wipe it dry, and lubricate according to the provided diagram (oil and grease points).

Maintenance Port:

Toro™ reels are equipped with a "Maintenance Port" – a main gear access door that allows anglers to easily grease the main gear without fully disassembling the reel. To use this feature, locate the lube port screw, rotate it counterclockwise with a small Philips head screwdriver until free, and remove the small "door." Lightly grease the exposed main gear with Abu Garcia Precision Grease. After greasing, reposition the door and reinstall the screw by rotating it clockwise, tightening it without over-tightening.

Periodic Cleaning:

For peak efficiency, the reel should be disassembled for a thorough cleaning and re-lubrication at least once a season. Exploded parts views are supplied with the reel for guidance. Reel maintenance kits can be purchased from local tackle stores. If preferred, an Abu Garcia Service Center can perform the service.

Sideplate Removal:

Toro™ reels have a removable palm sideplate for access to the spool and centrifugal brake system. To open, turn the spool access thumbscrew counterclockwise until it disengages. Gently pull on the thumbscrew head to slide it outward. Twist the sideplate upward until it reaches the stop position, allowing it to be removed.

Warranty Information:

A one-year limited warranty (for USA and Canada only) covers defects in material or workmanship, with Abu Garcia offering repair or replacement at no charge (excluding shipping). The warranty does not cover damage from product additions/alterations, accidental damage, loss, abuse, lack of maintenance, or normal wear. It is valid only for the original purchaser and does not extend to commercial or rental use. Warranty repairs should not be returned to the store of purchase but sent to an Abu Garcia Authorized Repair Center.
