Overview

This document describes the Traco Super-Sealer Shrink Wrap System, a device designed for packaging various products using shrink film.

Function Description:

The Super-Sealer is a shrink packaging system that utilizes heat to seal and shrink plastic films around products, creating a secure and professional-looking package. The system consists of a sealing unit (the Super-Sealer itself) and a heat gun. The sealing unit cuts and seals the shrink film, while the heat gun applies heat to shrink the film tightly around the product. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including packaging video cassettes, printing, computer software, art/frames, manuals, general packaging, gift baskets, CDs/DVDs, damaged package recovery, posters, retail packaging, books/magazines, and hardware.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Super-Sealer system comes in several models, each with varying sealing area lengths and maximum film widths:

  • SS-13: 13" sealing area, 13" max film width
  • SS-18: 18" sealing area, 18" max film width
  • SS-24: 24" sealing area, 24" max film width
  • SS-32: 32" sealing area, 32" max film width
  • SS-40: 40" sealing area, 40" max film width

Common specifications across all models include:

  • Maximum Film Weight: 100 LBS
  • Film Core Diameter: 1-7/8" & 3"
  • Power Supply (Primary): 110VAC* (220 VAC also available upon request)
  • Cycles: 50/60hz, 1 phase
  • Amperage:
    • SS-13: 3 amps
    • SS-18, SS-24: 5 amps
    • SS-32, SS-40: 8 amps

The accompanying Heat Gun has the following specifications:

  • Power Supply: 110 A/C 60hz
  • Wattage: 1100 watts
  • Temperature Range: 50°F - 1100°F
  • Weight: 2 LBS

The device is UL and CE listed, indicating compliance with safety standards.

Usage Features:

The Super-Sealer is designed for straightforward operation:

  1. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a 110 VAC 15A wall outlet.
  2. Power On: Depress the rocker switch to turn on the unit; no warm-up time is required for the sealer.
  3. Heat Gun Connection: Plug the heat gun into the AC outlet on the left side of the box.
  4. Film Loading: Separate the shrink film and place it around the spreader bar. If equipped with an optional perf roller, load the film between the perf wheel and plate first.
  5. Package Insertion & Sealing: Pull the film to the desired length on the left side of the sealing arm and pad. Open the film, insert the package, and roll excess film back onto the roll so the package is approximately even with the edge of the sealing pad. Hold the package in your left hand and firmly bring the sealing arm down onto the film and pad. Gently pull the package away in a tearing motion from the pad until it is completely separated. For Deluxe Models with a timer, adjust the dial to the proper setting, bring the arm down until the LED indicator turns off, then release. The cutting and sealing process should take 3 to 5 seconds. If using a model with an optional cutter blade, position the blade to the middle of the film, bring the arm down to puncture the film, then slide the blade from side to side.
  6. Shrinking: Adjust the heat gun to the desired temperature. Hold the gun approximately 12" from the product and begin shrinking the film around the seams first, then move towards the middle in a circular motion until the package has a glass-like appearance. It is crucial not to hold the gun in the same position for more than a few seconds to prevent burning the film.
  7. Power Off: Always turn off the Super Sealer® Shrink Packaging System when not in use.

Troubleshooting/Recommendations:

  • Film Separation: If centerfold shrink film doesn't separate, place tape on top and bottom of the film and pull apart.
  • Smoking/Sticking Film: For PP or PO film, keep the wire clean by burning off residue (no Teflon tape needed). For PVC film, Teflon tape over the heating element is required and should be replaced if it smokes.
  • Burning Holes: Indicates the heat gun is too hot or held in one spot for too long. Move the gun continuously in a circular spiral motion.
  • Improper Cutting/Sealing: Check if the on/off switch is on, timer is set correctly (for Deluxe Models), arm is in complete contact with the pad (gentle pressure), or if excessive pressure is applied. Wire may need cleaning.
  • Timer Setting (Deluxe Model): Set the timer to the minimal amount of time needed to cut and seal the film. Settings vary by film type; PVC film requires a lower setting.
  • Film Venting Tip: To prevent ballooning, cut small asterisk-shaped slits (1/16" deep) into the closed end of the centerfold package to allow air to escape during shrinking.

Maintenance Features:

The system comes with a Limited Equipment Warranty of 2 years (1 year for the heat gun). This warranty covers defective workmanship or material, with repairs made free-of-charge. It does not cover repairs due to normal wear, abuse, accidents, overloading, improper accessories, or use after partial failure. Parts not covered under warranty due to normal wear include Teflon Tape, Sponge Rubber Sealing Pad, Nichrome Wires, and Arm Springs.

Sealer Cleaning Instructions:

  • Heating Element: Never use abrasive materials. To clean the heating wire, remove the pad, pull the arm down to burn off residue, wipe with cardboard, then cover with a new piece of 3-mil Teflon tape (required for PVC/Polyethylene, not suggested for Polyolefin). The 10-mil Teflon tape on the sealing pad is always required.
  • Exterior Parts: Use any non-flammable spray cleaner.
  • Internal Cleaning: Not suggested or advised.
  • Teflon Tape: Replace if burnt, worn, or damaged.

Heat Gun Cleaning Instructions:

  • Use only a damp cloth to wipe the gun clean. Avoid turpentine, paint thinner, gasoline, or similar substances.

A FREE Maintenance Kit is offered upon return of a completed warranty card, including a Teflon tape, nichrome wire, and knob.

Safety Instructions:

  • Operate in a clean, dry, well-lighted work area.
  • Connect to a standard 115 volt 15 amp wall receptacle.
  • Unplug after use.
  • Do not expose to rain or moisture; store indoors.
  • Stay alert and use common sense; do not operate when tired or under medication.
  • Do not attempt repairs; call a qualified service technician.
  • Inspect power cords periodically; use U.L. listed three-wire extension cords if necessary.
  • Guard against electric shock by avoiding contact with grounded surfaces.
  • Keep children and visitors away from the work area.
  • Store sealer in a safe place, out of reach of children.
  • Only seal plastic shrink films intended for this sealer.
  • Maintain proper footing and balance.
  • Wear non-skid footwear, protective hair covering, eye protection, and work gloves.
  • Use only identical replacement parts.
  • Never use near combustible or flammable materials or gases.
  • Never use after recently pumping gasoline or using other combustible gas or liquid.
  • Sealer Specific: Do not touch the live heating element under the Teflon tape. Turn off and unplug when not in use. If the arm spring breaks, turn off and disconnect immediately. Only use the AC outlet on the side for industrial heat guns. Only use the fuse capacity listed by the fuseholder.
  • Heat Gun Specific: Initial smoking is normal. The nozzle will darken over time. It has a thermal cut-off switch; if it shuts off, allow it to cool. Stand it on its convenient stand with the nozzle pointing up to cool. Do not touch the nozzle or place near combustibles. Allow to cool completely before storing. Do not use to dry hair. Do not obstruct airflow. Do not direct hot airflow towards people or animals. Do not touch the nozzle when running or hot. Turn off and disconnect when not in use. Only use for shrinking plastic films. Keep the heat gun moving constantly.
