Overview

This document provides instructions for operating the Fair-Play by TransLux scoreboard system used at the Olson Ice Center. It covers the setup and operation of the scoreboard for ice hockey games, including turning on the system, setting team names, managing the game clock, tracking scores and shots on goal, and handling penalties.

Function Description:

The Fair-Play by TransLux scoreboard is a dedicated electronic display system designed to provide real-time game information for ice hockey. It displays essential game data such as the game clock, period number, home and visitor scores, shots on goal (S.O.G.) for both teams, and penalty information for individual players. The system is operated via a control console with a numeric keypad, function buttons, and a small display screen that shows current settings and prompts.

Important Technical Specifications:

The control console features a main display that shows the current time, period, and team names (e.g., "HT 05:00. + HOCKEY"). It includes a numeric keypad (0-9) for data entry, along with specific function buttons for various scoreboard operations.

  • Power: The console operates on 9.6 VDC, as indicated by a label on the back.
  • Connectivity: It includes AUX OUT, HANDSWITCH, and RS-232 ports, suggesting potential for external control or data output.
  • Display: The main scoreboard display (not pictured in detail, but implied by the control console's functions) is capable of showing alphanumeric characters for team names and numeric values for time, scores, and penalties.

Usage Features:

The system offers a comprehensive set of features for managing an ice hockey game:

Turning On the Scoreboard:

* **Console Power:** The control console has an "On Off" button on its back. This must be set to "On" for the console to function.
* **Scoreboard Display Power:** The actual scoreboard display (the large screen visible to the audience) is managed by Olson Ice Center staff. Users are instructed to contact staff if the main display is not on.

Setting Team Names:

* **Accessing Name Entry:** Simultaneously press and hold the "Shift" button and either "Home Score" or "Visitor Score" buttons.
* **Navigation:** Use the "4" key to move the cursor left and the "6" key to move right.
* **Letter Selection:** Use the "5" key to select the desired letter from the displayed alphabet (e.g., "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP").
* **Confirmation:** Press "Enter" once the full team name is complete.
* **Abbreviation Note:** The system notes that long names like "Revolution" may need to be abbreviated to fit the display.

Setting the Game Clock:

* **Accessing Clock Set:** Press the "Clock Set" button.
* **Time Entry:** Enter the desired time for warm-up or a period using the numeric keypad. The system only requires minutes (e.g., "1-3" for 13 minutes), not seconds. Users should consult the coach, referee, or scoresheet for correct times.
*   **Confirmation:** Press "Enter".
* **Running the Clock:** Use the "Time In" toggle button to start and stop the clock.

Setting the Period:

* **Accessing Period Set:** Press the "Period" button.
* **Period Entry:** Enter the period number (e.g., "1", "2", or "3") using the numeric keypad.
*   **Confirmation:** Press "Enter".

Keeping Score:

* **Adding a Goal:** Press "Home Score" or "Visitor Score", then press "+1".
* **Correcting a Goal:** If a goal is added accidentally, press "Home Score" or "Visitor Score", then enter the correct score number, and press "Enter".

Tracking Shots on Goal (S.O.G.):

* **Adding a Shot:** Press "Home S.O.G" or "Visitor S.O.G", then press "+1".
* **Correcting a Shot:** If a shot is added accidentally, press "Home S.O.G" or "Visitor S.O.G", then enter the correct shots on goal number, and press "Enter".
* **Definition:** A "Shot on Goal" is defined as a shot that directs the puck towards the net and either goes into the net or is stopped by the goaltender.

Managing Penalties:

*   **Adding a Penalty:**
    * Press "Home Penalty" or "Visitor Penalty" (depending on the team).
    * Press "+2" or "+5" for the penalty length (2 or 5 minutes, respectively). Penalty times should be confirmed from the scoresheet.
    *   Enter the player number as a two-digit number (e.g., "07" for player 7).
    *   Press "Enter".
*   **Deleting a Penalty (after a goal):**
    * Press "Home Penalty" or "Visitor Penalty".
    *   Press "CLR".
    *   Enter the player number.
    *   Press "CLR" again.
* **Consultation:** Users are advised to ask the referee for clarification on penalty length, player number, or if a penalty should be deleted.

Maintenance Features:

The document does not explicitly detail maintenance features for the scoreboard system. However, the mention of "BAT/RF" (Battery/Radio Frequency) suggests that the console might be battery-powered or have wireless capabilities, which would imply battery replacement as a maintenance task. The RS-232 port could be used for diagnostics or software updates, though this is not specified. The instruction to contact Olson Ice Center staff if the main scoreboard display is not on indicates that staff are responsible for the primary display's maintenance and operation, separate from the control console.
