Ion 50 R and
Flare R Metro
Front and rear lights
If you or someone you are riding with has photosensitivity to flashing lights, ensure
this light does not trigger an episode prior to use on the road. While the flash pattern
is designed to be outside of the frequency range most associated with causing a
photosensitive reaction (5-60Hz), each individual’s response may vary, and having an
episode while riding may result in a fall and/or injury.

Overview

The Trek Ion 50 R and Flare R Metro are rechargeable Lithium-Polymer bicycle lights designed for safety in low light conditions. The Ion 50 R is a front light, and the Flare R Metro is a rear light. Both lights are designed to be easily mounted and operated.

Function Description

The primary function of these lights is to enhance visibility for cyclists in low light conditions, thereby improving safety. Both lights offer multiple modes of operation, including high, low, and flash settings, to suit various riding environments and battery life requirements. The front light (Ion 50 R) is designed to illuminate the path ahead, while the rear light (Flare R Metro) ensures the cyclist is visible to traffic approaching from behind.

Usage Features

Basic Operation:

  • Turning On: Press the power button. The light will turn on in the last mode used.
  • Changing Modes: Press the power button again to cycle through the available modes (High, Low, Flash).
  • Turning Off: Hold the power button for a few seconds.

Battery Life Indication: Both lights feature a battery indicator that changes color to show the remaining charge:

  • Green steady: 30-100% charge
  • Red steady: 10-30% charge
  • Red flashing: Less than 10% charge

Charging:

  • Both lights are charged via a Micro USB cable.
  • The charging process is indicated by a red flashing LED.
  • Once fully charged, the LED will turn off, and the green light will illuminate for approximately one minute.
  • It is recommended to charge the lights before first use.
  • Charging should occur at room temperature (32°F to 122°F / 0°C to 50°C).
  • Avoid leaving the lights outdoors when not in use.
  • Ensure the USB port cover is closed after charging to prevent damage.

Mounting:

  • The Ion 50 R (front light) comes with a Front Clip Connect Bracket for easy attachment to the bicycle.
  • The Flare R Metro (rear light) comes with a Rear Clip Connect Bracket, which can be attached to a seatpost or other suitable location. The design also allows for attachment to backpacks or saddle bags.

Safety Warnings:

  • Front Light Intensity: The front light is very bright. Do not stare at an operating front light, as it may be harmful to the eyes.
  • Heat Generation: The front light may become hot and could cause a burn or damage material if it makes contact. Do not activate (turn on) the light in an enclosed area.
  • Battery Handling: Do not puncture, crush, deform, disassemble, or heat the lithium-ion battery above the permitted temperature. Inflicted damage to the battery may result in a fire, explosion, or contact with specks of lithium or lithium dust.
  • Visibility: A bicycle without correct lights and reflectors might be difficult for other people to see, and you might not be able to see them. If you cannot see, or other people cannot see you, you could have an accident. Ensure your lights are set up, operating correctly, and that batteries are charged.
  • Photosensitivity: If you or someone riding with you has photosensitivity to flashing lights, ensure the light does not trigger an episode prior to use on the road. The flash pattern is designed to be outside of the frequency range most associated with causing a photosensitive reaction (5-60Hz), but individual responses may vary.
  • German Road Traffic Regulation (StVZO): The Ion 50 R and Flare R Metro lights do not conform to the German road traffic regulation StVZO.

Maintenance Features

Charging and Battery Care:

  • Always charge the battery at room temperature for optimal performance and safety.
  • Avoid charging or operating the lights below freezing temperatures, as this can reduce performance.
  • For best results, charge at room temperature in a dry place.
  • Use a certified CE or UL approved Micro USB charger rated for 500 mA or greater.
  • Close the USB port cover after the charge is complete to protect against moisture and debris.

Cleaning:

  • While not explicitly detailed, general maintenance for bicycle lights typically involves wiping them clean with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime, ensuring the lenses are clear for maximum light output. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic or electronic components.

Recycling:

  • Both lights contain lithium-polymer batteries, which should be recycled properly.
