* Items are typically delivered with concrete fireplace structure. It may not suit to position
these items into final location at time of fireplace install, however it helps to use mechanical
lift to place them nearby for an easier 2 man lift into final position.
** A sackbarrow will help to move GRC Woodboxes into position without damaging corners
(Especially if already plastered). Bottlejacks and support blocks are required to support
weight of concrete hearths while aligning bolts.
*** Ensure your crane/ HIAB provider supplies these (Hudson requires 2 x 2.5 ton).
**** Only required if your installation uses infill rather than anchor brackets (see
relevant ‘Trendz Precast Fireplace Design’ Engineers drawings for spec for your fireplace). Due
to volumes required Trendz recommends using concrete from a local ready-mix supplier.

This document is an assembly and installation sheet for Trendz Outdoor Fireplaces, which are precast concrete structures with a steel firebox insert. It provides detailed instructions, critical notes, and a list of included components for installing and maintaining these fireplaces.

Function Description

Trendz Outdoor Fireplaces are designed as outdoor heating and aesthetic features. They consist of a precast concrete shell and a steel firebox insert, intended to be installed on a concrete footing. The installation process involves lifting and positioning the concrete structure, assembling the steel firebox (if not pre-fitted), and adding various components like wood boxes, hearths, chimneys, and flues. The fireplaces are designed to be finished with modified plaster, stone, or brick cladding.

Important Technical Specifications

Fireplace Models:

• Burton: Precast concrete structure with a steel firebox. Requires 2 x 1.3 ton swift lifts for the concrete structure.
• Mini Burton: Precast concrete structure with a steel firebox. Requires 2 x 1.3 ton swift lifts for the concrete structure.
• Douglas: Precast concrete structure with a steel firebox. Requires 2 x 1.3 ton swift lifts for the concrete structure.
• Hudson: Precast concrete structure with a steel firebox. Requires 2 x 2.5 ton swift lifts for the concrete structure.

Lifting Requirements:

• Concrete Structure: All models require a mechanical lift (HIAB or mobile crane) with 1.3 ton swift lift clutches (except Hudson, which needs 2.5 ton swift lifts).
• Woodbox (GRConcrete): May require a mechanical lift (sackbarrow/bottlejacks) or a 2-man lift.
• Hearth (GRConcrete/Concrete-polished): Requires a mechanical lift (sackbarrow/bottlejacks) or a 2-man lift.
• Chimney (Burton): Requires a 2-man lift.
• Extension Blocks (Douglas, Hudson): Requires a 2-man lift.
• Plinth (Concrete): Requires a 4-man lift.

Concrete Specifications:

• Footing: Must be concrete, poured on firm ground, and constructed to specified dimensions and strength ratings.
• Concrete Infill: If required, a standard 6:1 ratio mix (25Mpa) is recommended for foundations and concrete infill. Rapid-set bagged concrete is not recommended due to expansion and potential cracking.
• Infill Volume:
  • Douglas/Hudson: 0.3 m³
  • Burton: 0.4 m³
  • Mini Burton: 0.25 m³

Fasteners and Tools:

• Concrete Drill Bits: 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm, 19mm.
• Crescent/Socket: Required for various tightening tasks.
• Hex Key/Driver Bit: 5mm.
• Phillips Screw Driver: Required for various tightening tasks.
• Concrete Infill: Volume varies by model (e.g., Douglas/Hudson 0.3 m³, Burton 0.4 m³, Mini Burton 0.25 m³).
• Wheel Barrow/Trowel: For concrete handling.
• Ladder: Required for heights over 1.5m.
• Swiftlift Clutch: 1.3 ton (2.5 ton for Hudson).
• Steel Firebox Components: Side plates (x2), back plate, top baffle, bottom plate, surround, 12x M10x30mm bolts/washers, 4x sleeve anchor screws.
• Concrete Cap (Douglas only): Included.
• Steel Flange/3x Sleeve Anchor Screws (Burton/Mini Burton only): Included.
• Black Stainless-Steel Flue (Burton/Mini Burton): Included.
• Hearth Bolts: 12mm galvanised bolts with 50mm washers for pre-drilled hearths. Polished hearths use 2 x M12 bolts threading into inserts with 80x6mm (inside) and 80x3mm (outside) washers.
• Chimney Extension Blocks: Require 4 x D12 reinforcing rods and chemical anchor adhesive.
• Plinth Fasteners: 4 x L brackets and M10 x 60 concrete screws.

Clearances:

• Combustible Materials: The fire should be placed at least 50mm from any combustible material.
• Non-Combustible Surface: A depth of 500mm+ of non-combustible surface is recommended in front of the full width of the fireplace structure.
• Existing Concrete Slabs: If used, the pad should have an extra 100mm+ on each side beyond the fireplace footprint.
• S/S Square Cap: Should be no closer than 75mm to the top of the chimney.

Usage Features

Installation Process:

1. Footing Preparation: Ensure the concrete footing is cured, level, and plumb according to specifications. Plastic shim packers may be used for levelling.
2. Lifting and Positioning: Use a HIAB or mobile crane to lift the concrete fireplace structure into position. Other heavy components like wood boxes and chimney extension blocks should also be lifted into place.
3. Firebox Assembly (if not pre-fitted):
   • Site Assembly: Fill the pre-cast structure with concrete up to the bottom of the opening. Once cured (1-2 days), assemble the steel firebox inside the opening.
   • Pre-assembled Option: Remove the fire base plate (D), drill and fix L brackets to foundations with M10 x 60 concrete screws, then reinstall the fire plate.
   • Assembly Steps:
     • Slide back panel (B) into the cavity, leaning against the back wall.
     • Slide side panels (A) into the cavity with rails inwards and bolt lugs at the rear.
     • Bolt back panel to sides using M10 bolts.
     • Bolt top baffle (C) to the top of the side panels. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to align bolt holes. Ensure throat opening is 100-110mm before tightening bolts.
4. Component Installation:
   • Bottom Steel Fire Plate (D): Slide into lower side rails and bolt down (install optional hearth first).
   • Frame Surround (E): Insert and fix to concrete with dyna screws (4 x 6.5mm holes pre-drilled). Fix after plastering/painting, ensuring it's centralised and screws are flush.
   • Concrete Cap (Douglas) or Steel Flange (Burton/Mini Burton): Install after cladding/painting is complete.
   • Flue (Burton/Mini Burton): Bolt stainless-steel flange to the top of the concrete structure with 3 x M10 x 40 dyna bolts. Slide black flue over the flange after plastering/stonework.
   • Wood Boxes: Place on either side of the fire. May require packers for alignment. Secure with 2 x M10 concrete screws with 50mm washers.
   • Hearth: Insert 12mm galvanised bolts through pre-drilled holes in the fireplace and hearth, with nuts and 50mm washers. Do not overtighten. Polished hearths use M12 bolts into threaded inserts.
   • Chimney Extension Blocks: Insert 4 x D12 reinforcing rods into the top of the chimney with chemical anchor adhesive. Add mortar between blocks and fill cavities.
   • Square Chimney (Burton): Apply adhesive to the structure, screw 12mm threaded rods into inserts, and place chimney flush with the back of the structure. Fix with 50 x 50 washer and M12 nut.
   • S/S Square Cap (Douglas, Hudson, Burton square chimney): Fit cap legs into 75mm deep holes in the top of the chimney. Can be glued.
   • Anti-Down Draft (ADD) Cowl: Fix flashing plate to the top of the chimney with masonry screws and silicon. Rivet flue and ADD Cowl together (for square chimneys). Round flue ADD cowl slides inside the flue.
   • Plinth: Place on concrete foundation. Fix to foundations with 4 x L brackets and M10 x 60 concrete screws. Place fireplace on plinth, flush with the back, and bolt with 4 x L brackets and M10 x 60 concrete screw bolts.

Seasoning the Fireplace:

• Initial Fires: Burn 2-3 small, slow-burning fires for 2-3 hours each to season the new concrete structure. This helps cladding settle and prevents cracking from excess moisture expansion. Repeat this process 3 times.

Finishing:

• The fireplace MUST be finished with either a modified plaster (e.g., Rockcote), stone, or brick. This helps hide non-structural hairline cracks.

Maintenance Features

Corten Steel Wood Box Maintenance:

• Apply RIPO (Rust Inhibiting Penetrating Oil) every 3-6 months to form a rust barrier and protect against condensation corrosion.

Firebox Maintenance:

• Paint the firebox with Stove Bright® High-Temperature aerosol paint in satin black every 3-6 months to ensure longevity.
• Empty fire ashes with an ashpan shovel every 5-10 fires.

General Care:

• Cracks: Small hairline cracks (up to 2mm wide) are normal due to temperature changes and casting/curing processes. These are non-structural and can be painted over. If concerned about crack size, contact Trendz.
• Warranty: A 2-year warranty covers structural cracking and failure of the steel firebox. It does NOT cover hairline cracks.

Important Notes:

• Installation should be carried out by a professional builder or landscaper.
• Engineers' drawings for specific fireplaces are available on request.
• Ensure your crane/HIAB provider supplies necessary equipment (e.g., swift lift clutches).
• Concrete infill should not be completed until the hearth (optional) is installed, unless the firebox is pre-assembled with foundation brackets.
• The hearth is NOT designed for adults to sit or stand on.
• If the flue goes through the roof, it must be installed to NZS2918 standards.
