Do you have a question about the Trina Solar TSM-PD15H and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an installation manual for Trina Solar crystalline photovoltaic (PV) modules, covering various models under IEC & UL versions. It provides essential information for the safe and proper installation, operation, and maintenance of these solar modules.

Function Description:

Trina Solar PV modules are designed to convert sunlight into DC electricity. They operate automatically and require minimal day-to-day supervision. The solar array generates DC electricity whenever light falls on it, and an inverter then converts this DC electricity into grid-compatible AC electricity. The modules are suitable for a wide range of applications, including residential and commercial installations, and can be mounted in landscape or portrait orientation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual covers a broad range of module types, including:

  • TSM-PD Series (H and M): TSM-PD15H, TSM-PD06H, TSM-PD15M, TSM-PD06M, and their respective .08, .09, and (II) variants.
  • TSM-DD Series (H and M): TSM-DD15H(II), TSM-DD06H(II), TSM-DD15M(II), TSM-DD06M(II), and their respective .08(II), .09(II), and .05(II) variants.
  • TSM-PE Series (H, M, and A): TSM-PE15H, TSM-PE06H, TSM-PE15M, TSM-PE06M, TSM-PE15A, TSM-PE06A, and their respective .08, .09, (II), .08(II), and .09(II) variants.
  • TSM-DE Series (H, M, and A): TSM-DE15H(II), TSM-DE06H(II), TSM-DE15M(II), TSM-DE06M(II), TSM-DE15A(II), TSM-DE06A(II), and their respective .08(II), .09(II), and .05(II) variants.
  • TSM-NE Series: TSM-NE15M(II), TSM-ND06M(II).

Environmental and Climate Conditions:

  • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +85°C
  • Storage Temperature: -20°C to +50°C
  • Humidity: Below 85% RH
  • Altitude: ≤ 2000m
  • Mechanical Load Pressure: 5400Pa Max from the front side and 2400Pa from the rear. Modules are evaluated by TUV for a maximum positive design loading of below 3600Pa and negative design loading of 1600Pa with a 1.5 times safety factor.
  • Rated Electrical Characteristics: Within ± 10 percent of measured values at Standard Test Conditions (1000 W/m², 25°C cell temperature, and AM 1.5 solar spectral irradiance).
  • Maximum System Voltage: Must not exceed 1500V DC. Trina Solar modules are certified for operating in Application Class A installations at voltages below 1500V DC.
  • Cables: Stranded copper cables with a cross-sectional area of 4mm² (0.006in²), rated for 1000V DC, 90°C, and UV resistant. Output cables are 12AWG PV Wire.
  • Connectors: Plug & play connectors. Minimum and maximum outer diameters of the cable are 5 to 7mm (0.038 to 0.076in²). Minimum bending radius for cables is 43mm (1.69in).

Usage Features:

  • Mounting Methods: Modules can be mounted using corrosion-proof M8 bolts through mounting holes on the rear frame or with specially designed module clamps.
    • Bolt Mounting: Frames have 4-49x14mm mounting holes. M8 bolts, flat washers, spring washers, and nuts are used, tightened to 16-20 N.m (140-180 lbf.in). All parts in contact with the frame should use flat stainless steel washers of minimum 1.8mm thickness with an outer diameter of 20-24mm (0.79-0.94in).
    • Clamp Mounting: Requires clamps with EPDM or similar insulating washers and M8 fixing bolts (at least). Clamps must overlap the module frame by 7-10mm (0.28-0.39in). A minimum of four clamps per module is recommended, placed on the long sides for portrait orientation or short sides for landscape orientation. Applied torque should adhere to mechanical design standards.
    • Single-axis Tracking System Mounting (for 72-cell polycrystalline modules): Modules are fixed on the axis by bolting the long frame. Frames have 4-Ø7x10mm (0.28x0.39in) mounting holes. M6 bolts, two flat washers, a spring washer, and a nut are used, tightened to 16 N.m (140 lbf.in). Flat stainless steel washers of minimum 1.5mm thickness with an outer diameter of 16-20mm (0.63-0.79in) are required. Mechanical load pressure is 30 lbs.ft² max from the front and rear sides according to UL1703.
  • Clearance: A minimum clearance of 115mm (4.5in) is recommended between the module frame and the wall/roof surface.
  • Module Spacing: Minimum distance between two modules is 10mm (0.4in).
  • Drainage: Mounting methods must not block module drainage holes.
  • Polarity: Always verify the voltage and polarity of each individual string before making parallel connections to avoid irreparable damage.
  • Fusing: Fuses should be rated for the maximum DC voltage and connected in each non-grounded pole of the array. Maximum fuse rating is typically 15A, but module-specific ratings are on the product label.
  • Inverter Compatibility: Trina Solar modules can be used with both galvanically isolated (with transformer) and transformerless inverters. For hot and wet areas, inverters with isolation transformers are recommended to ensure proper module function under positive voltage.
  • Anti-PID Technology: Trina Solar strongly suggests modules with Anti-PID technology to reduce the risk of Potential Induced Degradation (PID), especially in warm, humid climates or near constant moisture sources.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspections:
    • Annual inspection by trained personnel, wearing appropriate PPE (rubber gloves, boots, insulated tools).
    • Check mounting hardware for proper tightening (torque terminal bolts to 35 lbf.in for grounding, 16-20 N.m for module bolts). Loose connections can damage the array.
    • Inspect all cables and connections for tightness, protection from direct sunlight, and proper siting away from water.
    • Verify all string fuses are operating.
  • Cleaning:
    • Rainwater is usually sufficient, but regular cleaning is important, especially before summer, for modules with tilt angles below 10°, in dusty areas, or areas with high pollution/bird populations.
    • Use a soft cloth with mild detergent and clean water. Avoid severe thermal shocks by using water at a similar temperature to the modules.
    • Do not penetrate the substrate material when cleaning the back surface.
    • If unsure about cleaning necessity, measure inverter feed-in current before and after cleaning a soiled string. If improvement is less than 5%, cleaning may not be cost-effective.
  • Vegetation Management: Trim any vegetation that may shade the solar array.
  • Bypass Diodes: Modules are equipped with bypass diodes in the junction box to minimize heating and current losses. Do not attempt to open the junction box or change diodes.
  • Product Replacement:
    • If a module is damaged (broken glass, scratched back sheet), isolate the impacted array string to prevent current flow.
    • Disconnect connectors using the provided tool.
    • Replace with a new module of the same type.
    • Check the open circuit voltage of the array string to ensure it is within 10V of other parallel strings.
    • Re-engage the isolator.
    • Always observe safety precautions and wear cut-resistant gloves and other PPE.
  • Troubleshooting: If the installation does not work properly, contact the installer or Trina Solar's after-sales service team. Modules do not contain user-serviceable parts.
  • Safety: Always shut down the PV system before any electrical maintenance to prevent electric shock or burns.
