Overview

This document describes the fitting instructions and features of a Triumph genuine accessory kit, specifically a tail pack, designed for various Triumph motorcycle models. The kit includes different sizes of tail packs (10 litre and 50 litre) and associated mounting straps and protective films.

Function Description

The accessory kit provides additional storage capacity for Triumph motorcycles through the installation of a tail pack. The tail pack is designed to be mounted either on the rear rack or the pillion seat, depending on the motorcycle model and tail pack size. It allows riders to carry items securely during operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Tail Pack Sizes:
    • 10 litre (for Tiger 800 and Tiger 800XC only when fitted to the rear rack).
    • 50 litre (for various Tiger XR, XRT, XRx, XC, XCA, XCx, 800, 1200 models, and Explorer models).
  • Maximum Safe Load: 3 kg (6.6 lbs). Exceeding this limit can cause motorcycle instability and loss of control.
  • Components:

    • Mount strap short, male (1 off)
    • Mount strap short, female (1 off)

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The tail pack can be fitted to either the rear rack or the pillion seat, depending on the motorcycle model and tail pack size.
  • Mounting Straps: The kit includes both short and long male and female mounting straps to secure the tail pack. These straps are designed to wrap around grab rails, lashing hooks, or frame components.
  • Protective Film: Self-adhesive protective film is provided (where applicable) to prevent chafing or damage to the motorcycle's grab handles during installation and use.
  • Packing Guidance: When using the tail pack, heavier items should always be packed at the bottom of the bag to maintain motorcycle stability.
  • Strap Management: All excess mounting straps must be securely tied back to prevent them from becoming trapped in the motorcycle, touching the exhaust, or chafing against the motorcycle. Loose straps can lead to loss of motorcycle control.
  • Visibility: Ensure the tail pack and its mounting straps do not obscure the rear light unit or direction indicators, as this can reduce other road users' visibility.
  • Compatibility Restrictions:
    • The tail pack must not be fitted in conjunction with a top box, as this will affect handling and stability.
    • The tail pack must not be fitted to a sliding carriage (if fitted). If a sliding carriage is present, the tail pack must either be fitted to the pillion seat, or the carriage must be removed, and the bike reverted to its standard condition before fitting the tail pack to the rear rack.
    • For the 50 Litre Tail Pack, carry handles must be secured into zipped compartments before mounting to the motorcycle.
    • Shoulder straps must be removed from the tail pack before mounting to the motorcycle.
  • Handling Characteristics: After fitting the accessory kit, the motorcycle will exhibit new handling characteristics. Riders must operate the motorcycle in a safe area free of traffic to gain familiarity with these new characteristics.
  • Speed Restrictions: Never ride an accessory-equipped motorcycle (including those fitted with Triumph approved windscreens and luggage systems) at speeds above 80 mph (130 km/h). The presence of accessories changes stability and handling. This limit may be further reduced by non-approved accessories, incorrect loading, worn tyres, or poor motorcycle/weather conditions.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning:
    • Use of chemicals or high-pressure spray washers is not recommended for cleaning the tail pack, as they can cause damage.
    • Clean the tail pack using a sponge or cleaning cloth with low alkaline soap and water to maintain its appearance.
  • Pre-Ride Check: Always ensure the tail pack straps are correctly tensioned before riding the motorcycle to prevent loss of control due to a loose tail pack.
  • Strap Removal: Remove all straps from the motorcycle when operating it with the tail pack removed. Leaving straps fitted without the tail pack can result in damage to the straps or motorcycle and loss of control.
  • Surface Preparation: Ensure the underside of the tail pack is clean and dry prior to fitting to prevent damage or instability.
  • Protective Film Application: The cleaning wipe provided should be used to clean grab handles before applying the self-adhesive protective film, ensuring proper adhesion and protection.
