Overview

The TROX Splitter Sound Attenuator (models XS, MS, XK, MK, RK) is designed to reduce fan noise and air-regenerated noise in ventilation and air conditioning systems, such as air handling units or ducts.

Function Description:

The device consists of a sound attenuator casing (e.g., MS) and internal splitter elements (e.g., MK). Air flows through the attenuator, and the splitter elements, which are typically made with absorption material and/or resonating panels, absorb or reflect sound waves to reduce noise levels. The design allows for installation in various duct configurations, including horizontal and vertical ducts, and can be subdivided for larger installations.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Temperature: -30 °C to 100 °C. For RK and MK/XK models with expanded metal construction, it can withstand up to 300 °C for 8 hours maximum.
  • Max. Airflow Velocity: 20 m/s.
  • Relative Humidity: ≤ 80%, non-condensing.
  • Casing Material Options:
    • Galvanised steel (1.0917)
    • Stainless steel V2A (1.4301)
    • Stainless steel V4A (1.4571) (for splitters without aerodynamically profiled frames)
    • Aluminium (EN AW-5754) (for splitters without aerodynamically profiled frames)
  • Splitter Size Limits (Horizontal/Vertical Ducts): Max. H = 1200 mm, L = 1500 mm.
  • Weight of one splitter: Max. 40 kg.
  • Airway Width (S): The width between two splitters is determined by the clear width of the duct. The gap between the outermost splitter and the duct should be S/2.
    • S = (B - n x T) / n, where B is duct width, n is number of splitters, and T is splitter thickness.
    • Recommended S min. = 0.25 x T; 40 mm min.
    • Recommended S max. = 2 x T.
  • Subdivided Constructions:
    • Width subdivided (B): >2400 mm to 4800 mm.
    • Height subdivided (H): >1800 mm to 3600 mm.
    • Length subdivided (L): >1500 mm to 3000 mm (for MS, XS with casing).
    • For MK, XK, subdivided height: >2500 to 5000 mm (H 1500 mm max. if L >= 1500 mm).
    • For MK, XK, subdivided length: >2500 to 5000 mm (L 1500 mm max. if H >= 1500 mm).
  • ATEX Compliance: Splitter sound attenuators XS and MS, as well as sound attenuator splitters XK, MK, and RK, may be used in Zone 1 and 2 areas (gas) and Zone 21 and 22 (dust) areas with potentially explosive atmospheres according to EU Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) and 1999/92/EC.

Usage Features:

  • Versatile Installation: Can be installed in both horizontal and vertical ducts.
  • Airflow Direction: Suitable for any airflow direction.
  • Subdivision for Large Systems: Larger constructions can be supplied in multiple parts (e.g., two parts for L >1500 mm to 3000 mm) and assembled on-site, allowing for installation in larger ducts.
  • Splitter Sets (MS-OL, XS-OL): Available without a casing for installation in rectangular ducts with plain, parallel walls.
  • Resonating Panels: MS-OL splitter sets and MK splitters come with resonating panels that cover half of each side, with the other half being absorption material with glass fibre scrim. Panels can be opposite each other or offset depending on splitter thickness.
  • Duct Connection: Flanges (30 mm or 20 mm) are available for connection to ducts, with screw holes for secure fitting. Angle section frames (W) are also available and come screw-fixed if ordered.
  • Fixing: Splitters can be fixed to sheet metal ducts using self-drilling screws (e.g., 4.2 x 13 DIN 7504) or to concrete ducts using rails.
  • Arrangement: Splitters should be installed in parallel with a defined airway width (S). Splitters of the same length (L) should be installed side by side or on top of each other.
  • Safety: The product is designed for safe use when installed correctly. However, incorrect use (e.g., outdoors without protection, in aggressive air, or in process manufacturing) can lead to dangerous situations.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Sound attenuators and splitters should be cleaned regularly to prevent dust accumulation.
  • Electrostatic Charge Prevention: Cleaning should be performed in a way that prevents the build-up of electrostatic charge, especially in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Repair and Replacement: Only qualified personnel should repair the products, using genuine replacement parts.
  • Pre-commissioning Check: Before commissioning, ensure that the attenuators/splitters are properly installed and free from residues and foreign matter.
