Overview

The Universel Model 33 Retrofit Electronic Computer is an electronic computer designed to replace existing mechanical registers in fuel dispensing devices. It integrates modern electronics into a compact package that fits into mechanical dispenser housings, offering an upgrade to electronic functionality at a lower cost than a new dispenser.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Universel Model 33 is to provide electronic control and display for fuel dispensing. It can operate as a full-service dispenser or integrate with various control systems for remote operation. The unit is designed for multiple applications, including retrofitting mechanical computers and use with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) dispensers.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: 115 VAC (Black wire for power, White wire for neutral return).
  • Grounding: Requires a good earth ground connection (Green wire) to prevent damage and maintain warranty validity.
  • Security: Features a programmable four-digit Security Code (PIN) to prevent unauthorized access to programming functions. The factory default code is 1111.
  • Power Backup: Includes a power backup system that allows the last sale to be displayed for a minimum of 15 minutes in case of AC power failure.
  • Displays: Utilizes LCD displays with backlighting. In bright sunlight, the backlighting may be difficult to see, requiring shielding of the unit.
  • Pulser and Handle Switch: The Retro Computer has a built-in pulser and handle switch.
  • Linkages: Requires one linkage between the meter and the computer and another between the handle and the computer. Existing linkages from the pump can be used; Universel Epsco does not supply these.
  • Motor Control: The motor can be controlled either by an existing motor control switch or by the Retro Model 33-P, which includes a power relay for pump motor operation. Semi-automatic computers have the motor switch built into the pump, while electric reset models do not.
  • Wiring: All wiring must conform to NFPA-70, 30, 30A, and all appropriate state and local codes.

Usage Features:

  • Handheld Keyboard: A handheld keypad, similar to a telephone keypad, is provided for user access to programming functions, including reading totals and changing prices.
  • Price Setting:
    1. Connect the handheld keypad to the small round cable on the lower side of the RETRO (after removing the bezel).
    2. Press the Special Function [#] key once.
    3. Press [2], [2].
    4. Press the Special Function [#] key.
    5. Enter the access code (refer to the Confidential sheet for instructions on the security code).
    6. Press the Special Function [#] key.
    7. Enter the price per Gallon/Liter; the amount will appear on the volume (center) display.
    8. Press the Special Function [#] key; the price will then be displayed on the price (bottom) display.
    9. Press the Clear [*] pushbutton to exit the price setting mode.
  • Retrieving Totals:
    • Totals are displayed using Most Significant Digits (MSD) and Least Significant Digits (LSD). The MSD is displayed first, followed approximately 8 seconds later by the LSD. This applies to both money and gallons displays.
    • To retrieve totals, press the Special Function [#] key and then enter [1],[1].
  • Lamp Test: When the handle is turned on, the unit performs a lamp test, displaying a factory-set price.
  • Optional Connections for Remote Operation: For remote operation, connect the Authorize (AUTH) wire, the In Use (IU) wire, and the Valve (VLV) wires between the unit and the remote controller.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation:
    1. Turn off all power to the unit (failure to do so can result in electrical shock).
    2. Disconnect control wires from the existing mechanical computer, marking them carefully for reuse with the new RETRO.
    3. Disconnect and save linkages between the handle and the mechanical computer, and between the meter and the mechanical computer.
    4. Unbolt and remove the existing mechanical computer.
    5. Bolt in the RETRO.
    6. Connect the ground (GREEN) wire to the unit.
    7. Connect the 115 VAC (BLACK wire) and the Neutral (WHITE Wire).
    8. Connect optional wires for remote operation if applicable.
  • Troubleshooting Guide:
    • Display off: Check 115vac, fuse, and circuit breaker.
    • Display on, No Backlight: Unit is in power fail; check 115vac.
    • Cannot change prices: Check keypad connection, ensure proper access code is entered, and verify the correct sequence is used.
  • Security Code Management:
    • The Security Code cannot be displayed or recalled from the unit. It is crucial to record the Security Code along with the serial number for each unit and keep it in a safe place. Losing or forgetting the code requires factory assistance.
    • Changing the Security Code:
      1. Connect the handheld keypad.
      2. Press the Clear [*] key once.
      3. Press the Special Function [#] key.
      4. Press [9],[9].
      5. Enter your current access code.
      6. Enter your new four-digit code (it will be displayed on the volume display).
      7. Press the Special Function [#] key.
      • Pressing Clear [*] before step 8 or attempting to change to a code with less than four digits will exit the operation without changing the security code.
