PERFORMANCE
CONSIDERATIONS
The performance of the UVD400E UV disinfection chamber has been
third party validated using accepted bioassay techniques. The
UVD400E is equipped with both visible and audio lamp failure alarms.
For your safety, it is necessary that you determine that the audio
alarm can be heard where you use the water treated by the unit. It is
possible to operate the unit with the lamp disconnected which will
allow you to validate the adequacy of the audio alarm function in your
installation. In order to optimize disinfection performance, you must
only use the unit with water that meets the minimum standard and
replace the UV lamp at recommended intervals. Failure to follow these
guidelines will result in reduced disinfection performance.
UV RADIATION HAZARD
NEVER OPERATE UV LAMP OUTSIDE OF THE UV
DISINFECTION CHAMBER – EXPOSURE TO UV LIGHT
CAN RESULT IN EXTREME BURNING OF SKIN AND EYES
Safety instructions – Please read carefully
Danger: Do not plug the unit in if any of the external
surfaces or electrical parts is wet. Condensation on
the disinfection chamber is normal.
Danger: To avoid possible electric shock, special care should be
taken since water may be present near electrical equipment. Unless
referred to in these instructions, do not attempt repairs yourself.
Contact the manufacturer for service advice.
Danger: Do not operate this system if it has a damaged electrical cord
or plug, is malfunctioning, or has been dropped or damaged in any
way.
Caution: Do not use this unit for anything other than its intended
potable water application. The use of attachments not recommended,
approved or sold by the manufacturer/distributor may result in an
unsafe condition.
Caution: Before any cleaning or maintenance, always unplug the unit.
Caution: Protect your unit from freezing. Drain all water from the unit
if freezing temperatures exist.
WATER QUALITY
Your UV disinfection system requires clean water for optimum
performance. You should only operate your unit if the source water
meets the following standards.
INSTALLATION CAUTIONS
nConnect your UV unit to a grounded (3 pronged) receptacle (120V,
60HZ) (a GFI is highly recommended) and ensure that the lamp
connector ground wire is connected to the ground stud on the top of
the reactor vessel. Note: Power source for applications outside of
North America must match requirements of the unit (eg. 240V, 50Hz).
oUV Dynamics disinfection devices are designed to be installed on
the cold water line only.
pThe unit must be installed vertically with the lamp connector
pointing upwards – the water source should only be connected to the
inlet port on the bottom of the unit. CAUTION: reversing the flow
direction by connecting the water source to the side mounted output
port could result in reduced disinfection performance and improper
operation of the flow regulator.
qInstall your UV Dynamics disinfection system indoors in a protected
area where the temperature does not fall below 4°C. (40°F) and the
humidity level is low (to prevent condensation on the chamber). This
unit functions ideally in a temperature range from 9°C - 29°C. (49 –
85F)
rUse teflon tape on all pipe connections. DO NOT USE ANY
OTHER SEALANT.

Do you have a question about the UV Dynamics UVD400E and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The UV Dynamics UVD400E is a microprocessor-controlled ultraviolet disinfection system designed for potable water applications. It utilizes UV light to neutralize harmful microorganisms in water, providing a non-chemical disinfection method.

Function Description:

The UVD400E operates by exposing water to ultraviolet light within a stainless steel disinfection chamber. The UV light, specifically at a germicidal wavelength, disrupts the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, rendering them unable to reproduce and effectively inactivating them. The system is designed for continuous operation and is intended to be the final step in a water treatment system. It is crucial that the source water meets specific quality standards for optimal performance, including low turbidity (< 1 NTU), suspended solids (< 10mg/L), and total iron (< 0.3 mg/L), among others. Failure to meet these standards can reduce disinfection effectiveness. The unit is equipped with both visible and audio alarms to indicate lamp failure, ensuring the user is aware of any potential compromise in disinfection. A solenoid valve, if connected, can automatically terminate water flow upon lamp failure, preventing the passage of untreated water.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Flow Rate: 10 gpm (38 lpm / 2.3 m³/hr)

Usage Features:

The UVD400E is designed for installation on the cold water line only and must be installed vertically with the lamp connector pointing upwards. The water source should connect to the inlet port at the bottom of the unit; reversing the flow direction can impair disinfection performance and flow regulator operation. The system should be installed indoors in a protected area where temperatures remain between 4°C (40°F) and 29°C (85°F) and humidity is low to prevent condensation. Teflon tape is recommended for all pipe connections.

The UV power source features a microprocessor-controlled system with audio and visual alarm indicators. Upon AC power application, the lamp ignites, indicated by a green "lamp-on" LED. A self-test sequence follows, including three buzzer beeps and three red timer LED flashes. During normal operation, only the green "lamp-on" LED is illuminated.

In case of lamp failure or abnormal operating conditions, the alarm buzzer sounds, the green "lamp-on" LED extinguishes, and the solenoid valve (if connected) will stop water flow. The annual lamp change reminder timer runs for approximately one year. At the end of this period, the timer flashes, and the buzzer sounds, indicating a 28-day grace period. During this grace period, the buzzer can be silenced for seven days by pressing the timer button, though the LED continues to flash. The buzzer reset can be activated up to four times. After the grace period, the red timer LED illuminates continuously, and the buzzer sounds, indicating a lamp change alarm mode. The UV lamp is not shut down in this mode, and the solenoid valve drive is not disabled. The remaining lamp life can be checked by pressing the timer button and counting the red timer LED flashes. The system also has a safety feature that shuts down if the AC input voltage is outside operating limits.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the UVD400E's performance.

  • Lamp Replacement: The UV lamp has an effective service life of approximately one year (9000 hours). Although it may light for longer, its UV light penetration can fall below the prescribed safety level, necessitating annual replacement regardless of apparent condition. When replacing the lamp, it is important to handle it by the ends or with soft gloves to avoid touching the quartz sleeve or lamp with bare hands.
  • Quartz Sleeve Cleaning: The quartz sleeve, which encases the UV lamp, should be cleaned periodically to remove any scale or buildup that could impede UV light transmission. A vinegar solution or a readily available scale removal product (e.g., Limeaway, CLR) can be used for cleaning. The quartz sleeve is fragile and must be handled with care during removal and installation.
  • Timer Reset: The lamp change reminder timer is reset by disconnecting the UV power source from AC supply, waiting 15 seconds, and then reconnecting it while holding the timer button down. A solid three-second beep confirms a successful reset. Resetting the timer is only possible when it is in the grace or lamp change alarm mode. Special instructions are provided with replacement lamps for resetting the timer prematurely due to lamp failure.
  • Plumbing Disinfection: Before initial use or after any maintenance that could introduce contaminants, the entire plumbing system should be chemically disinfected. This involves removing the sediment filter cartridge, adding 250-500ml of unscented chlorine bleach to the empty filter housing, and then operating all faucets and appliances until a chlorine smell is detected. The bleach solution should remain in the system for 30 minutes before flushing thoroughly.
  • Freezing Protection: The unit must be protected from freezing. All water should be drained from the unit if freezing temperatures are expected.
  • Water Quality Monitoring: Maintaining the specified water quality standards (turbidity, suspended solids, color, iron, manganese, hardness) is essential for optimal disinfection. A 5-micron sediment pre-filter is recommended as the first step in the water treatment system.
