What to do if I can’t see anything through the eyepieces/camera on my Van Guard 1200CM?

      Keith MilesAug 3, 2025
If you can't see anything through the eyepieces or camera on your Van Guard Microscope, first, ensure the light is turned on and the Variable Lighting Control (VLC) is adequately increased. Check that the objectives and condenser are properly installed. For trinocular models, make sure the prism slider is correctly positioned—pull it out for camera use and push it in for eyepieces. Also, verify that there is nothing blocking the light path between the substage illuminator and the objectives.

If you can’t get any light on your Van Guard Microscope, try the following: First, move the power switch to the “|” position and ensure the microscope is properly plugged in. Then, check the Variable Lighting Control (VLC) and turn it up if it's turned all the way down. If the issue persists, try switching to a different outlet. Finally, inspect the fuse and bulb, replacing them if necessary.

If you can't focus on the specimen with your Van Guard Microscope, ensure the up-stop is set to the appropriate height. If using the 100X objective, apply immersion oil. Confirm the condenser is installed. Clean or replace objectives if they are oily or dirty. Ensure the slide is not upside down and that you are using the correct cover glass (#1.5, 0.17mm).
