Overview

This document provides installation instructions and care guidelines for the Vance & Hines Stainless Hi-Output RR 2-1 exhaust system, designed for 2017+ Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles. The part numbers for this system are 27321/47321.

Function Description:

The Vance & Hines Stainless Hi-Output RR 2-1 exhaust system is an aftermarket performance exhaust designed to replace the stock exhaust on compatible Harley-Davidson Touring models. Its primary function is to enhance the motorcycle's performance, sound, and aesthetic appeal. The "2-1" configuration indicates that exhaust gases from two cylinders merge into a single muffler, a design often chosen for its performance benefits, particularly in torque delivery. The "Hi-Output" designation suggests a design optimized for maximum exhaust flow and power output. The system is constructed from stainless steel, known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, although it is susceptible to discoloration from heat.

Usage Features:

Installation Process (Summary):

The installation involves several steps, starting with the removal of the stock exhaust system and then installing the new Vance & Hines system.

  1. Preparation: Remove saddlebags, right side panel, and floorboards.
  2. Stock Exhaust Removal:
    • Loosen muffler pinch clamps and mounting bolts.
    • Remove stock mufflers.
    • Unplug O2 sensors and free their wires.
    • Remove floorboards (right side and passenger, if equipped).
    • Loosen and remove crossover section and associated clamps/brackets.
    • Remove front headpipe mounting bracket nut and stud.
    • Loosen heat shield clamps.
    • Remove flange mounting nuts from cylinder heads.
    • Carefully remove head pipes.
    • Remove the stud mentioned in step 10 of removal.
    • Remove O2 sensors from stock pipes for reuse.
    • Remove exhaust port flanges and circlips from stock system for reuse (replace circlips if bent).
  3. Vance & Hines Exhaust Installation:
    • Install the 1343-P bracket onto the frame using supplied bolts and washers (Figure 1).
    • Install circlips and flanges from the stock system onto the new head pipes.
    • Apply anti-seize to O2 sensor threads and install them into the new head pipes, using 18mm to 12mm adapters for 12mm sensors.
    • Install the front header assembly (D1134FB/D1334FP) into the front exhaust port, hand-tightening stock flange nuts (Figure 2).
    • Install the rear header assembly (D1135FB/D1335FP) into the exhaust port, hand-tightening stock flange nuts (Figure 2).
    • Slide the dog bone nut plate (A195HW) into the muffler bracket.
    • Slip the muffler can onto the front and rear head pipes.
    • Hand-tighten the muffler to the mounting bracket using supplied 5/16-18 flange head bolts (A240HW, x2) (Figure 3).
    • Tightening Sequence:
      1. Head flange nuts (x4).
      2. Muffler body 5/16-18 flange head bolts (A240HW, x2). Ensure head pipes and mufflers are parallel (Figure 4).
    • Install springs using the supplied spring puller, ensuring about 2" between spring tabs (Figure 5).
    • Route O2 sensor wires along OE path and plug into the correct connectors (front to Grey, rear to Black).
    • Install 3/8” lock washers (A286HW) on supplied 3/8"-16 socket cap screws (2.25" & 3.5" long).

Maintenance Features:

Exhaust Care (Stainless):

  • Pre-Start Cleaning: Before starting the motorcycle after installation, thoroughly clean the pipes and muffler with a soft cloth and cleaning solvent (e.g., glass cleaner, alcohol, acetone) to remove any oil, residue, or fingerprints. Any residue will stain the finish when the metal heats up.
  • Discoloration: Discoloration of stainless steel exhaust systems due to heat is considered normal.
  • Engine Tuning: High-performance engine tuning, especially with a dyno, can lead to severe discoloration.
  • Idling: Avoid long periods of idling, as this can cause discoloration.
  • Intake Leaks: Intake leaks can cause the engine to run lean and overheat, potentially leading to discoloration.
  • Exhaust Leaks: Ensure there are no exhaust leaks at the junction of the exhaust pipes and cylinder head. Replacing gaskets if they are worn is recommended.

Exhaust Care (Black):

  • Pre-Start Cleaning: Before starting the motorcycle after installation, thoroughly clean the black pipes with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Dry with a clean towel to remove any residue. Do NOT use anything abrasive to clean black pipes.
  • Discoloration: Avoid long periods of idling, as this can cause discoloration.
