How to fix no spark at ODS/pilot on Vanguard VN20BT Heater?
    • W
      Wesley SmithAug 12, 2025
If the ignitor button is pressed, but there is no spark at the ODS/pilot of your Vanguard Heater, several issues could be the cause. The ignitor electrode might be positioned incorrectly or broken, in which case you should replace the pilot assembly. Alternatively, the ignitor electrode might not be connected to the ignitor cable; ensure you reconnect the ignitor cable. The ignitor cable could also be pinched or wet, so free it from any obstructions and keep it dry. If the ignitor cable is broken, replace it. Finally, a bad piezo ignitor can cause this issue, and it should be replaced.

What to do if Vanguard VN20BT Heater pilot light goes out when releasing control knob?
    • O
      oandradeAug 15, 2025
If the ODS/pilot lights, but the flame goes out when you release the control knob on your Vanguard Heater, make sure the control knob is fully pressed in and held for at least 30 seconds after the pilot lights. The safety interlock system may have been triggered; wait one minute for it to reset, then repeat the ignition operation. Ensure the equipment shutoff valve is fully open. Check the thermocouple connection at the control valve and hand tighten it until it is snug, then tighten it an additional 1/4 turn. The pilot flame may not be touching the thermocouple, in that case you should clean or replace the ODS/pilot assembly. If the thermocouple or control valve is damaged, replace them.

Why won't my Vanguard Heater ignite even with a spark?
    • M
      Maria RamirezAug 20, 2025
If, when pressing the ignitor button, there is a spark at the ODS/pilot but no ignition on your Vanguard Heater, first ensure that the gas supply is turned on and the equipment shutoff valve is open. Verify that the control knob is in the PILOT position and pressed in. If there is air in the gas lines from a recent installation, continue holding down the control knob and repeat the ignition operation until the air is removed. For propane/LP gas models, check for a depleted gas supply and contact your local gas company if needed. The ODS/pilot may be clogged, so clean or replace the ODS/pilot assembly. Finally, the gas regulator setting may be incorrect, requiring you to replace the gas regulator.

    • H
      hsmithAug 23, 2025
If the burner on your Vanguard Heater does not light after the ODS/pilot is lit, the burner orifice may be clogged. Clean the burner or replace the burner orifice. It's also possible that the inlet gas pressure is too low.

Why does my Vanguard VN20BT smell?
    • D
      David RobinsonAug 27, 2025
If your Vanguard Heater produces unwanted odors, it might be burning vapors from paint, hair spray, glues, or other similar products. Ventilate the room and stop using these products while the heater is running. For propane/LP gas models, check for a low fuel supply and refill the tank if needed. A gas leak could also be the source of the odor; locate and correct any leaks.

How to stop Vanguard VN20BT burner from backfiring?
    • D
      Denise CopelandAug 31, 2025
If the burner is backfiring during combustion in your Vanguard Heater, the burner orifice may be clogged or damaged; clean or replace it. The burner itself may be damaged, requiring replacement. A defective gas regulator can also cause backfiring, so replace it if necessary.
