Overview

The Velleman VM130 is a two-channel RF remote control set designed for various applications, offering both ON/OFF (toggle) and timer-mode (pulse) operation for its two relay contact outputs. This versatile system allows users to wirelessly control two independent devices or functions, making it suitable for home automation, garage door openers, lighting control, and other remote switching needs.

The set consists of a receiver unit and a transmitter. The receiver is the central control unit, equipped with two relay outputs, each capable of handling a 5A resistive load. These outputs can be configured independently to operate in either a toggle mode or a timed pulse mode. In toggle mode, pressing the corresponding button on the transmitter will switch the relay ON, and pressing it again will switch it OFF. In timer mode, the relay will activate for a preset duration, which can be selected from a range of options including 0.5 seconds, 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour. This flexibility allows for precise control over connected devices, whether they require a momentary pulse or a sustained ON period.

The receiver unit features a 'setup' button for configuration and learning, along with LED indicators for channel 1 (CH1), channel 2 (CH2), mode/timer for CH1, and confirm/timer for CH2. These indicators provide visual feedback during the setup process and normal operation, making it easy to understand the current status of the device. The antenna on the receiver should be straightened and the unit should not be mounted in close proximity to other electronic devices or metal objects to ensure optimal range and performance. The receiver can be powered by either 9 to 13Vac or 10 to 15Vdc, with a maximum current draw of 130mA, and the polarity of the power supply is not critical.

The transmitter is a compact, handheld device with two buttons, SW1 and SW2, corresponding to channel 1 and channel 2 of the receiver, respectively. It operates on a 12V battery (type V23GA, GP23GA) and uses a CE compliant 433 MHz frequency for communication. Each transmitter generates a unique 32-bit random code, offering over 1,000,000,000 combinations, which enhances security and prevents interference from other RF devices. The transmitter also includes a 'program' button (SW3) and an LED indicator for code generation and reset procedures.

To use the remote control set, the transmitter's unique code must first be "learned" by the receiver. This process involves connecting power to the receiver, holding the 'setup' button until the 'MODE' LED turns on, pressing any button on the transmitter, and then releasing the 'setup' button once the 'CONFIRM' LED lights up. Up to 31 different transmitters can be stored in the receiver's memory, allowing multiple users or multiple remote controls to operate the same receiver. If the memory becomes full, the 'MODE' and 'CONFIRM' LEDs will flash simultaneously when the 'setup' button is pressed, indicating that the memory needs to be cleared before new transmitters can be added.

Configuring the operating mode for each channel is straightforward. By repeatedly pressing the 'setup' button, users can select either CH1 or CH2. A long push of the 'setup' button confirms the selection, and the selected relay will turn ON. Then, by pressing the 'setup' button a number of times, the desired mode (ON/OFF or one of the timer durations) can be chosen, with the 'MODE' LED flashing to indicate the current selection. Another long push confirms the mode, and the selected channel will turn OFF, ready for use. The unit automatically returns to normal operation if left idle for 10 seconds.

Maintenance features include the ability to change the transmitter's code and to return it to a factory default code. To change the code, SW1 is held, SW3 is pressed three times, and then SW1 is released. The LED will flash three times, indicating a new unique 32-bit code has been generated and stored. To return to the default code, SW1 is held, SW3 is held for approximately 10 seconds until the LED flashes five times, and then both buttons are released. The receiver also offers a safety feature to erase all learned remotes from its memory. This is done by disconnecting the power, holding the 'setup' button, reconnecting the power, and then releasing the 'setup' button after the 'MODE' and 'CONFIRM' LEDs stop flashing. This process takes about 10 seconds, and if the button is released prematurely, the memory will not be cleared. After clearing the memory, the unit will only respond to the default code, and it is recommended to reset the transmitter to its default code as well.

An internal heating option is available for the receiver, which can be useful in cold environments. However, to minimize idle current, especially if the unit is used inside a car, the heating jumper should be removed. During normal operation, if a timer has been set for a channel, the relay will turn on when the transmitter button is pushed. The relay will turn off once the preset time has elapsed. The timer can be turned off at any time by pressing the transmitter button again, and the corresponding LED will flash while the timer is running. In '0.5s timer' mode, the relay remains on only as long as the remote button is held.

The Velleman VM130 is designed for ease of use and reliable performance, providing a flexible and secure solution for remote control applications. Its robust design and comprehensive features make it a valuable component for various electronic projects and control systems.
