Overview

The device described in this manual is the Victory V4 Series Duchess Guitar Amplifier.

Function Description

The Duchess V4 Guitar Amplifier is a compact, high-performance guitar amplifier designed to deliver a wide range of tones, from clean headroom to natural valve overdrive. It incorporates a pre-amplifier section with specific valve types and an ICEpower 200AS1 output stage. The amplifier features a built-in digital reverb and a tremolo effect, both controllable from the top panel. It is designed for use with electric guitars and can be integrated into various setups, including direct connection to a PA system or desk, or with external effects pedals.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Output:
    • 180 Watts RMS into 4 Ohms (maximum)
    • 100 Watts RMS into 8 Ohms
    • 50 Watts RMS into 16 Ohms
    • Measurements taken at 240V mains input using a 1 KHz Sine Wave, just before clipping.
  • Valves (Tubes):
    • V1: EC900 (6HA5) triode (1x)
    • V2, V3, V4: CV4014 (EF91) pentode (3x)
    • These are 7-pin valves, not interchangeable with normal 9-pin dual-triode types (e.g., 12AX7/ECC83).
  • Output Stage: ICEpower 200AS1. The output stage is fully protected against short circuit and open circuit, meaning it can be used without a speaker or load connected.
  • Speaker Impedance: Drives any load of 4 Ohms and above. Higher impedance loads will result in less output power.
  • 9Vdc Output: Max 500mA, for powering effects pedals.
  • Line Out (Balanced): TRS socket, Post-EQ and Effects Loop signal, nominally 1.7Vrms (+4dbu).
  • Cooling: Fitted with a 60mm 12V fan, voltage reduced to ~3V for optimal speed vs. noise vs. cooling. The amplifier does not rely on the fan for correct operation; it reduces external chassis heat.
  • Dimensions (Unboxed): 224mm (w) x 105mm (h) x 170mm (d), including feet and handle.
  • Dimensions (Boxed): 285mm (w) x 160mm (h) x 215mm (d).
  • Weight (Unboxed): 1.6 Kgs (3.52 lbs).
  • Weight (Boxed): 2.0 Kgs (4.4 lbs).
  • Mains Fuse: T2A L Fuse, 85-265Vac.
  • Effects Loop: Simple, low impedance, series loop.

Usage Features

  • Input: Standard input for guitar or front-end pedals.
  • Controls (Top Panel):
    • Bass: Adjusts low frequency content.
    • Middle: Adjusts midrange frequencies for cut or fattening.
    • Treble: Adjusts high frequency content and shapes overdrive character.
    • Volume: Adjusts input sensitivity for clean headroom or natural valve overdrive.
    • Master Volume: Sets overall amplifier volume. When maxed, the V4 acts as a non-master volume amp, with input Volume and guitar Volume controlling gain and volume.
    • Tremolo Depth: Controls the amplitude modulation of the tremolo effect.
    • Tremolo Speed: Controls the rate of the tremolo effect.
    • Reverb: Controls the amount of built-in digital reverb.
    • Tremolo Footswitch: Large switch on the top panel to turn the tremolo effect ON/OFF (LED indicates ON).
  • Rear Panel Connections:
    • Footswitch Tremolo: Socket for an optional 1-Way latching footswitch to remotely switch the Tremolo effect ON/OFF.
    • Effects Loop (SEND/RETURN):
      • SEND: Connects to the input of effects units (e.g., Delay, Chorus, Reverb). Can also send a signal to another amplifier.
      • RETURN: Connects to the output of effects units. Internally connected to SEND when not in use. Can be used as a small signal 'Slave' input. Warning: Do NOT plug an amplifier's speaker output into the Return socket.
    • Line Out (Balanced): For balanced connection to a PA system or desk, including all tone, tremolo, reverb, and pedal effects.
    • 9Vdc OUT: Powers external effects pedals (max 500mA).
    • Speaker Output: Connects to a speaker cabinet.
    • Mains Input: For the power cord.
  • Fault Diagnosis: The RETURN socket can be used to bypass the pre-amplifier section. Plugging a guitar directly into RETURN and playing can help identify if a sound problem is in the pre-amp section (likely a faulty pre-amp valve).
  • Pedal Board Integration: Countersunk screws for the baseplate allow for feet removal, enabling the amp to be Velcro'd flush to a pedal board.

Maintenance Features

  • User Guide: Provided with the amplifier, regularly updated versions available on the Victory website.
  • Safety Instructions: Emphasizes reading guidelines, following warnings (especially those in RED), avoiding use near liquids, not blocking openings, using a dry cloth for cleaning, and referring all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Damage Requiring Service: Specifies conditions under which servicing is required (damaged cord/plug, liquid/objects in product, exposure to rain/water, abnormal operation, dropped/damaged, distinct change in performance).
  • Replacement Parts: Service technicians should use manufacturer-specified replacement parts to avoid fire, electric shock, or other hazards.
  • Valve Replacement:
    • Recommended to be done by a qualified technician.
    • Requires unplugging mains lead and allowing capacitors to discharge.
    • Remove 4 x M4 Countersunk Posi-Drive bolts holding the base plate (using a No.2 Point Posi-Drive screwdriver).
    • Valves are held tightly; use a slow circular motion to ease them out.
    • Ensure pins are correctly lined up (gap between pins 1 & 7) when replacing.
    • No biasing or setup is required after changing valves.
    • Screenprinting on the base plate indicates valve types.
    • Replacement valves (EC900, CV4014) are available from www.victorystore.co.uk.
  • Screws: All Victory amplifiers use Posidrive Screws & Machine Bolts, which require an 8-blade Posidrive screwdriver (No.1 and No.2 Point recommended) for optimal precision and torque, to prevent damage during maintenance.
  • Warranty:
    • 5-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects and faulty components.
    • Valves (tubes) have an extended 2-year warranty (from the usual 90 days) due to their high-quality NATO specifications (Mullard CV4014s and E.I. EC900s), designed for a minimum lifespan of 6000 hours.
    • Warranty is transferable to a new owner.
  • Service Centres: Victory is establishing Official Service Centres globally; check the website for locations. These centres provide original Victory spare parts and qualified technical support for warranty and non-warranty work.
  • Contact Information: Sales and service email addresses, website, YouTube, and Facebook links are provided for support.
