1. INTRODUCTION
Viking supervised VXD Single-Interlocked Preaction Systems utilize a Viking
Model VXD Deluge Valve and a pneumatically pressurized automatic sprinkler
system. This feature helps prevent undetected leaks. Single-Interlocked Preaction
Systems are commonly used where the sprinkler system piping and/or sprinkler
may be subject to damage. If the system piping or a sprinkler is damaged,
supervisory pressure is reduced and a “low air” supervisory is activated. The
electrically controlled preaction systems include an electric solenoid valve
controlled by an approved release control panel (sold separately) with compatible
detection system (sold separately). In fire conditions, when the detection system
operates, the system release control panel energizes the solenoid valve open,
causing the deluge valve to open. The sprinkler system fills with water. If any
sprinklers have opened, water will flow from the system. If sprinklers have not
opened, water will be in the sprinkler system piping when the sprinkler operates.
A sprinkler must open before water flows from the system.

Overview

The Viking Model VXD Single-Interlocked Preaction System with Electric Release is a fire protection system designed to prevent undetected leaks and provide controlled water discharge in the event of a fire. It utilizes a Viking Model VXD Deluge Valve and a pneumatically pressurized automatic sprinkler system.

Function Description:

This system is primarily used in environments where sprinkler piping or sprinklers may be susceptible to damage. In its normal "SET" condition, water supply pressure is maintained in the priming chamber of the deluge valve through a priming line, which includes a normally open priming valve, strainer, restricted orifice, and check valve. This pressure holds the deluge valve diaphragm closed, keeping the outlet chamber and system piping dry.

In fire conditions, an approved release control panel, connected to a compatible detection system, energizes a normally closed solenoid valve, causing it to open. This releases pressure from the priming chamber faster than it can be supplied, leading to the deluge valve diaphragm opening. Water then flows into the system piping and alarm devices, activating water motor alarms and/or water flow alarms. Water will discharge from any open sprinklers or spray nozzles. If no sprinklers have opened, water will fill the sprinkler system piping, but discharge will only occur once a sprinkler opens.

In trouble conditions, such as a sprinkler opening before detection system operation or a loss of supervisory pressure in the sprinkler piping, a low air pressure condition will be signaled by the air supervisory switch. However, the deluge valve will NOT open. If the detection system operates due to mechanical damage or malfunction, the deluge valve will open, but water will be contained within the sprinkler piping, and alarms will activate.

Manual operation is possible by pulling the emergency release, which releases pressure from the priming chamber and opens the deluge valve, allowing water to flow into the system piping and from any open sprinklers/nozzles.

  • Air Supply Compressor Sizing: Must be sized to establish total required air pressure in 30 minutes.
  • Listings and Approvals: cULus Listed (Categories VLFT and VLFT7), FM Approved.

Usage Features:

  • Single-Interlocked Operation: Requires both the detection system to operate and a sprinkler to open for water discharge, preventing accidental water release.
  • Leak Prevention: Pneumatically pressurized sprinkler system helps prevent undetected leaks.
  • Electric Release: Utilizes an electric solenoid valve controlled by a release control panel for reliable activation.
  • Manual Override: Emergency release valve allows for manual activation of the system.
  • Dry System Piping: Keeps the sprinkler piping dry until activation, reducing the risk of water damage from accidental discharge.
  • Component Information: Additional system components like the Pressure Operated Relief Valve (PORV) and Solenoid Valve have scannable/clickable links for more information.
  • Installation Guidance: References current Viking Technical Data for individual components and applicable installation standards, codes, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Maintenance Features:

  • Weekly Visual Inspection: Recommended to check the main water supply control valve, other valves, and for signs of mechanical damage, leakage, or corrosion.
  • Quarterly Water Flow Alarm Test: Involves opening the alarm test valve to verify local electric and mechanical water motor alarms, and remote station alarm signals.
  • Quarterly Main Drain Test: Involves recording water supply pressure, fully opening and slowly closing the flow test valve, and comparing results to previous data.
  • Annual Trip Test: A critical test that involves operating a detector to trip the system, allowing full water flow. This test requires precautions to prevent damage as water will flow into the sprinkler piping and from any open sprinklers/nozzles.
  • Maintenance After Each Operation: Includes inspecting the entire system for damage, replacing release devices/sprinklers, flushing the system if exposed to corrosive water, and performing semi-annual maintenance.
  • Semi-Annual Maintenance: Involves removing the system from service, closing control valves, relieving priming chamber pressure, inspecting and cleaning all trim for corrosion/blockage, and cleaning/replacing strainer screens.
  • Every Fifth Year Inspection: Recommended for internal inspection of Deluge Valves, strainers, and restricted orifices, unless more frequent inspections are indicated by tests.
  • Air Supply Maintenance: The air supply must be regulated, restricted, and maintained automatically, with the air maintenance device regulating and restricting supervisory air flow.
  • Documentation: Requires recording and providing notification of inspection results to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
