Overview

The Violectric HPA V550 / V550 PRO is a high-end headphone amplifier and preamplifier designed to deliver exceptional audio quality for discerning users. It is engineered to drive a wide range of headphones, from low to high impedance (16-600 ohms), including dynamic and orthodynamic models, ensuring optimal performance across various listening setups.

Function Description

The core function of the HPA V550 is to amplify audio signals for headphones and to act as a preamplifier for other audio components. It features a true balanced amplifier design, incorporating four discrete-design power amplifiers with 16 transistors per channel, resulting in a total of 32 transistors dedicated to analog signal processing. This architecture ensures extremely low output impedance, minimal self-generated noise, and excellent crosstalk rejection, as channels are physically separated.

The device offers three analog stereo inputs: one balanced via Neutrik XLR and two unbalanced via RCA sockets. These inputs are switchable from the front panel or via the remote control, with LEDs indicating the active input. A crucial feature is the PRE-GAIN function, which provides seven steps of gain/attenuation from -18 dBr to +18 dBr. This allows for precise matching of the amplifier's input sensitivity to various source output levels and headphone sensitivities, optimizing the volume control's travel and minimizing self-generated noise.

For output, the HPA V550 provides both headphone and line outputs. Headphone outputs include a 4-pin XLR connector for balanced headphones and two 6.3 mm (1/4") TRS phone jacks for unbalanced headphones. The line outputs are available via balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors, offering flexibility for connecting to active speakers or power amplifiers. The line outputs can be switched between "PRE-FADER" (fixed output level, independent of volume control) and "POST-FADER" (variable output level, controlled by the volume knob), making it suitable for various system configurations. The line output gain can also be adjusted in seven steps, similar to the headphone PRE-GAIN.

The HPA V550 incorporates a sophisticated volume control system. The standard HPA V550 uses an Alps RK 27 motorized volume control, allowing for both manual adjustment and remote control operation. The HPA V550 PRO model features a reed relay attenuator with 256 steps of 0.4 dB each, providing extremely precise volume adjustment and superior channel matching. This is achieved through special "reed relays" where switching contacts are enclosed in a gas-filled glass tube and actuated by a magnetic field. A balance control is also included to compensate for minor level differences between the left and right channels, which can arise from recorded material, headphone systems, or individual hearing. This control affects only the right channel to maintain optimal crosstalk specifications.

The device is equipped with comprehensive protective circuits to ensure safe operation and prevent damage to connected headphones. These include a five-second delay during power-on to suppress transient noises, instant cut-off during power-off, and detection for DC voltages and overload conditions at the outputs. In case of an error (DC voltage, overload), the headphone sockets are disconnected, and the "PROTECT" LED illuminates red. The amplifier automatically returns to normal operation once the fault condition is cleared.

Usage Features

The HPA V550 is designed for user-friendly operation with both front panel controls and a dedicated infrared remote control.

  • Power On/Off: The unit is powered on and off via a switch on the front panel. A five-second power-on delay protects headphones, during which the "PROTECT" LED lights red. The unit always starts with the last saved input and output settings.
  • Input Selection: Analog inputs (XLR, RCA 1, RCA 2) can be selected using the "ANALOGUE INPUTS" button on the front panel or the "INPUT 1 / 2 / 3" buttons on the remote control.
  • Volume Control: The large volume knob on the front panel allows for manual adjustment. For the PRO version, this knob is motorized, enabling remote control via the "VOLUME +/-" buttons. Manual operation of the motorized knob is possible without damage.
  • Balance Control: A dedicated balance knob allows for fine-tuning the left/right channel balance.
  • PRE-GAIN Adjustment: DIP switches on the rear panel allow users to set the PRE-GAIN for the headphone amplifier. Settings should be made for both left and right channels identically, with the volume control set to minimum or headphone outputs deactivated to avoid level leaps. The goal is to position the volume knob around 12 o'clock for "normal" listening, optimizing dynamic range and minimizing noise.
  • Output Management: The "HEAD" button activates/deactivates the front headphone outputs, and the "LINE" button activates/deactivates the rear line outputs. White LEDs indicate active outputs. The remote control also has dedicated buttons for these functions.
  • Mute Function: The "MUTE" button on the remote control mutes all outputs (both headphone and line), indicated by a red "MUTE" LED on the front panel. Mute can be released separately for headphone or line outputs via front panel buttons, or for both simultaneously by pressing the remote's "MUTE" button again.
  • Remote Control: The included remote control provides convenient access to volume, input selection, output selection, and mute functions. It operates via infrared, with an effective range of 5-7 meters. The remote can also be configured for alternative modes to control other Violectric DAC devices.
  • Reset Function: In case of operational issues, a factory reset can be performed by pushing and holding the "ANALOGUE INPUTS" button while powering on the unit. All LEDs will light up, confirming the reset to default settings.

Maintenance Features

The HPA V550 is designed for durability and ease of maintenance, with a focus on internal component quality and user safety.

  • Internal Settings (Jumpers): Certain internal settings, such as ground-lift jumpers and AC voltage selection, can be adjusted by the user. However, this requires opening the unit and pulling the mains plug for safety. A TORX T10 or Philips #1 screwdriver is needed. The manual provides detailed diagrams for these internal adjustments.
    • General GROUND-LIFT Jumper: This jumper, accessible internally, lifts the internal ground potential to cut DC voltages and lower frequencies (< 150 Hz) from the interconnection, helping to mitigate hum or jitter. The default setting is "LIFT."
    • XLR GROUND-LIFT Jumpers: These jumpers, also internal, allow for different grounding configurations for the XLR inputs (G(ROUND), L(IFT), C(ASE)), affecting how Pin 1 is connected to the internal ground or case. The default is "G" (ground). Users are cautioned that altering these settings from ex-works positions might lead to EMC emissions.
  • Power Supply: The unit operates on either 230V AC or 115V AC, selectable internally via a mains voltage selector. Two toroidal transformers provide stable operating voltages.
  • Mains Fuse: The mains fuse is soldered internally on the circuit board and should only be replaced by qualified personnel during servicing, as a blown fuse indicates an internal fault.
  • Remote Control Battery Replacement: The remote control is powered by a CR2032 lithium battery. If the remote stops working, the battery can be checked using a smartphone camera (infrared rays are visible through the camera). To replace, a paperclip can be used to release the keypad from the aluminum frame (held by magnets). The electronics can then be carefully removed to access the battery, ensuring the (+) pole points upwards.
  • Case Construction: The robust aluminum case (3+4 mm thick, with an 8 mm front panel) ensures mechanical stability and protects internal components.
  • Warranty: The device comes with a 5-year warranty, and Lake People electronic GmbH offers full technical support even after the warranty expires. For repairs, the unit should be shipped to the manufacturer with proof of purchase and a description of the fault, ideally in its original packaging.
