The Vocera Smartbadge is a communication device designed for healthcare professionals, facilitating efficient voice and text communication within a facility. It integrates several features to streamline workflows, enhance patient care, and ensure rapid response in critical situations.
The primary function of the Smartbadge is to enable hands-free, voice-activated communication. Users can initiate calls by pressing the Call Button and speaking commands to the Vocera Genie, such as "Say or spell your first and last name" to log in, or "Log Out" to end a session. This voice-activated interface allows for quick and intuitive operation, especially in environments where hands may be occupied. The device also supports text-based communication through a chat function, allowing users to send and receive messages.
A crucial safety feature is the Panic Button, which, when pressed, places an emergency call to a pre-configured emergency group within the facility. This ensures immediate assistance can be summoned in urgent situations. The Smartbadge also includes a Do Not Disturb (DND) button, which places the device in DND mode and puts incoming calls on hold, allowing users to focus on tasks without interruption.
The device features a screen that displays essential information such as time, volume level, network connection status, battery status, and user availability. The screen is organized into several layers: Home, Directory, and Settings. The Home screen provides an overview of calls, messages, alerts, and alarms. The Directory screen allows users to access and manage favorite users and groups, as well as assign individuals and groups as favorites for quick access. The Settings screen provides options to view account details, adjust Smartbadge settings, set DND status, and log out.
The Smartbadge offers a variety of usage features designed for ease and efficiency. For voice communication, users simply press the Call Button, wait for a slight vibration, and then speak to the Vocera Genie. The Genie guides the user through login and logout procedures. It's important that the user's finger is bare or wearing a light glove for proper sensor activation. Once logged in, calls can be initiated directly through voice commands or by selecting contacts from the Directory screen.
When placing a call through the Contacts screen, users can tap on events like voice messages or missed calls to view contact options, or directly use the call option. The device also supports a search function within the Directory screen, allowing users to find specific users or groups by typing in two or more letters using a landscape keyboard. The screen can then be rotated back to portrait view to scroll through search results.
Creating favorites is a key feature for quick access to frequently contacted individuals or groups. Users can access the Directory screen from the Home screen, search for users or groups, and then tap a star icon to flag them as favorites.
The Smartbadge can operate in "handset mode" for private conversations. On the active Call Screen, tapping the speaker icon switches the device from speakerphone to handset mode. Handset mode can also be set as the default in the badge settings for added privacy.
For text communication, users can start a chat by selecting an event from the Home screen or a user/group from the Directory screen. The chat option on the contact screen brings up a small, functional keyboard in landscape mode, allowing users to compose messages. Messages sent to 50 or more individuals are automatically classified as a mass notification. The priority of a message can be changed using an exclamation point icon next to the message contents field.
Responding to incoming chats is intuitive. Users can view incoming messages from the top of the screen or the Home screen. From the message screen, options are available to access the keyboard for replies, add additional participants, or call the sender. Users can swipe left to right on the active message screen to return to the Home screen list view, or tap the caller's name or the green bar at the top left to return to the active call screen.
The screen layers (Home, Directory, Settings) each have their own filter and menu options. Tapping the chevron at the top of the screen reveals these options, and tapping it again closes the menu. This allows users to quickly filter and manage information displayed on each screen.
Maintenance of the Smartbadge primarily involves battery management. The device is powered on when the battery is inserted. The battery latch is located on the back of the Smartbadge, and a battery release mechanism facilitates easy removal and replacement. The screen displays the battery status, allowing users to monitor charge levels and anticipate when a battery change or recharge is needed. While the manual does not detail specific charging procedures, the presence of a battery status indicator implies a system for managing power.
The device's software is designed to be user-friendly, with clear on-screen prompts and a logical navigation structure. The "Log Out" option, accessible by swiping up from the Home screen to the Settings screen, ensures that user sessions can be securely ended. This is important for maintaining privacy and accountability in a shared device environment. The "Volume Up and Down" buttons not only adjust call and non-urgent alert tone volumes but also serve to wake up the screen for viewing, contributing to the device's overall usability and responsiveness.
