Summary

Introduction

General Information

Shiftlock (automatic transmission)

Locks the gear selector in Park position. Release by turning ignition key and pressing brake.

Keylock (automatic transmission)

Ensures gear selector is in Park before removing ignition key. Prevents accidental starting.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

Self-diagnostic test at approx. 12 mph. Pulsating pedal is normal. Enhances control during braking.

Fuel filler door

Door is connected to central locking. Unlock via switch on light switch panel. Remains unlocked until car moves.

Fuel filler cap

Close cap clockwise until it clicks. Improper closure may illuminate Check Engine light.

Important information

Familiarize with manual before first use. Keep manual in car for reference. Read chapters 1, 2, 4 for initial operation.

Instruments, Switches, and Controls

Front fog lights

Front fog lights function with low beam headlights. LED indicates when on. Automatically switch off next start.

Headlights/Parking lights/switch for unlocking fuel filler door

Controls headlights, parking lights, and fuel filler door unlock. Various positions for lighting and daylight sensors.

Rear fog light

Indicates when the rear fog light is activated. Located on the lighting panel.

Turn signals/High/low beams

Controls turn signals and switches between high and low beam headlights. Lever action for beam selection.

Cruise control

Sets and adjusts vehicle speed for comfortable driving. Controls located on steering wheel or stalk.

Instrument panel

Displays speed, RPM, fuel level, temperature, warning lights, and system messages via gauges and text window.

Safety

Seat belts

Urges occupants to wear seat belts for safety. Equipped with tensioners and tension reducing devices.

Airbags (Supplemental Restraint System)

SRS system enhances seat belt protection. Inflatable airbags in steering wheel and glove compartment area.

Front airbag (SRS) system

Driver and passenger airbags deploy in frontal/angular collisions. Uses sensors and gas generators.

Side airbags (SIPS airbags)

Side Impact Protection System airbags. Deploy in side impact collisions on the affected side only.

Instruments and Controls

Instrument panel

Contains gauges like speedometer, tachometer, fuel, and temperature. Includes warning lights and text window.

Switches in the center console

Controls for climate, traction systems (STC/DSTC), and optional active chassis (Four-C).

Folding head restraints

Button to fold down rear head restraints. Must be upright for safety if occupied.

Valet lock (trunk lock)

Locks the trunk independently of doors. Activated/deactivated via button. Displays status in text window.

12 volt socket

Auxiliary power outlet for accessories like cell phones. Requires ignition key in position 1 or higher.

Steering wheel adjustment

Adjust height and reach of steering wheel for comfortable driving. Lever locks position. Never adjust while driving.

Lighting panel

Controls headlights, parking lights, and instrument illumination. Includes switch for fuel filler door unlock.

Climate Control

Climate control systems - general information

Tips for condensation, ice/snow, cabin air filter, sensors, and parking in warm weather. AC disengages during full throttle.

Electronic climate control, ECC

Automatic climate control system with AUTO function. Controls temperature, blower, air distribution, and AC.

Manual climate control with air conditioning, A/C

Manual control of blower, temperature, and air distribution. AC can be turned on/off. Defroster activates AC.

Interior

Front seats

Manual and power seat adjustments for front seats. Includes warnings about adjusting while driving.

Programming the memory (option)

Stores up to three seating and mirror positions in the driver's seat memory. Programmed via MEM button.

Interior lighting

Controls for courtesy light and reading lights. Includes timer functions and automatic operation.

Vanity mirror

Light in the vanity mirror turns on when the cover is opened.

Floor mats

Proper placement and securing of floor mats is critical. Warning about accelerator pedal obstruction.

Locks and Alarm

Keys and remote controls

Details master and service keys, remote control functions for locking, unlocking, and alarm activation.

Replacing the battery in the remote control

Instructions for replacing the transmitter battery. Use CR2032 battery. Dispose of old battery properly.

Locking and unlocking

Methods for locking/unlocking doors and trunk from inside and outside. Includes automatic re-locking.

Opening the trunk from the inside

Emergency trunk release handle inside the trunk lid. For U.S. models only.

Child safety lock

Prevents rear doors from being opened from inside. Located on rear door jambs. Warning for accident safety.

Alarm

Automatic arming when locking. Monitors doors, hood, trunk, ignition, movement, and tilt. Siren and visual signals.

LED alarm status signals

Indicates alarm status: LED off (not armed), flashing (armed), rapid flashing (triggered). Faults reported in text window.

Automatic re-lock/re-arm system

Doors re-lock and alarm re-arm after 2 minutes if no door is opened after unlocking.

Starting and Driving

Engine oil

Oil quality specifications (ILSAC GF-2, ACEA A1, API SJ). Recommends Castrol. Check level regularly.

Fuel requirements

Use unleaded premium gasoline (AKI 91+). Avoid leaded fuel and MMT. Alcohol/ether fuels allowed within limits.

Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)

Volvo recommends detergent gasoline for clean injectors and valves. Avoid external cleaning systems.

Unleaded fuel

Vehicle has catalytic converter, requires unleaded fuel. Leaded fuel damages system. MMT may affect performance.

Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers

Allows ethanol (up to 10%) and MTBE (up to 15%) fuels. Check local regulations for oxygenated fuels.

Fuel filler door

Unlock via switch. Remains unlocked until car moves. Can be left unlocked when refueling.

Refueling

Do not refuel with engine running. Close cap fully. Avoid overfilling. Use correct fuel nozzle.

Starting the car

Procedure for starting engine: fasten seat belt, apply parking brake, turn key. Adjust seat/mirrors first.

Ignition switch and steering wheel lock

Positions 0 (locked), I (radio/accessories), II (driving), III (start). Never turn to 0 while driving.

Steering wheel lock

Engages to prevent theft. Turn wheel slightly to free ignition key. Never switch off ignition while car is in motion.

General information

Tips for economical driving: smooth acceleration, proper tire pressure, load management, and avoiding short trips.

5-speed manual transmission

Clutch operation and gear shifting. Overdrive (5th gear) for fuel economy. Clutch interlock for starting.

6-speed manual transmission

Utilizes fifth and sixth gears for improved fuel economy. Clutch interlock for starting.

Automatic transmission (option)

Gear selector positions (P, R, N, D, 4, 3, L). Engage gears with brake applied. Avoid harsh engagement.

Geartronic (option)

Manual shifting mode via gear selector. Displays selected gear. 'Lock-up' function for fuel saving.

All Wheel Drive (option)

Distributes power between front/rear wheels for traction. Electronically controlled coupling adjusts power.

Four-C active chassis system

Adjusts shock absorber stiffness for Comfort, Sport, or Advanced Sport modes. Sensors monitor vehicle dynamics.

Brake System

BRAKE Brake circuit malfunction

Hydraulic system with two circuits. Warning light indicates fault. Check brake fluid if pedal feels soft.

Anti-lock brakes (ABS)

Improves control by limiting brake lockup. Self-diagnostic test on startup. Pulsating pedal is normal.

Wheels and Tires

General information

Tire information on B-pillar or fuel filler door. Use same brand/size tires. Recommend winter tires for ice/snow.

Tread wear indicator

TWI strips indicate tread depth. Replace tires when strips are visible (approx. 1/16").

New tires

Tires are perishable goods. Manufacturing date shown by 4 digits (e.g., 1502).

Improving tire economy

Maintain correct tire pressure, drive smoothly, align wheels, and check tire rotation direction.

Tire inflation

Check pressure regularly with a gauge. Use cold inflation pressure. Under/over-inflation causes issues.

Checking tire pressure

Check pressure when tires are cold. Hot tire pressure readings are higher. Do not bleed hot tires.

Tire inflation pressure tables

Recommended tire pressures for different sizes and loads. Consult placard for specific vehicle tires.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) - option on certain U.S. models only

Monitors tire pressure via sensors. Warns of low pressure with light and message. Check tires immediately.

Changing tires

Notes on changing TPMS wheels/tires. Temporary spare lacks sensor. Message appears with non-TPMS wheels.

Self supporting run flat tires (option)

Reinforced sidewalls allow limited driving after pressure loss. Requires TPMS. Cannot be repaired.

Tire designation

Sidewall information: width, aspect ratio, construction, rim diameter, load index, and speed rating.

Glossary of tire terminology

Definitions for tire-related terms: placard, TIN, inflation pressure, load rating, treadwear, etc.

Vehicle loading

Proper loading impacts performance. Terms: curb weight, capacity weight, axle weight, GVW. Avoid exceeding limits.

Uniform Tire Quality Grading

Treadwear, traction, and temperature grades explained. Governed by Federal Safety Requirements.

Snow chains

Restrictions for snow chain use: front wheels only, Volvo-approved chains, clearance for brakes/suspension.

Snow tires, studded tires

Recommended for snow/icy conditions. Install on all four wheels. Studded tires require run-in period.

Temporary Spare

Temporary use only. Do not exceed 50 mph or 50 miles. Road holding affected. Must be replaced ASAP.

Changing wheels

Procedure for changing a wheel: engage brake, loosen bolts, jack up vehicle, replace wheel, tighten bolts.

Installing the wheel

Clean contact surfaces, place wheel, tighten bolts hand-tight, then crosswise to specified torque (102 ft-lbs).

Car Care

Washing and cleaning the car

Regular washing prevents damage. Use lukewarm water, mild detergent, and chamois. Avoid direct sunlight.

Automatic washing - simple and quick

Not recommended for first six months due to paint hardening. Ensure mirrors/antenna are secure.

Polishing and Waxing

Waxing beneficial after first year. Wash/dry car before. Use quality waxes for protection. Avoid direct sunlight.

Cleaning the upholstery

Fabric, plastic, and leather care instructions. Use mild soap and soft cloths. Special leather care kits available.

Cleaning the seat belts

Clean seat belts with lukewarm water and mild soap solution only.

Cleaning floor mats

Vacuum or brush clean floor mats regularly. Spot clean textile mats with mild detergent.

Paint touch up

Address paint damage promptly to prevent rust. Use Volvo touch-up paint for minor scratches/chips.

Maintenance and Service

Volvo service

Follow service program in Warranty booklet. Requires qualified technician for specialized checks and tools.

Engine air filter

Cleans air entering the engine. Replace cartridge every 37,500 miles or more often in dusty conditions.

Fuel filter

Replace fuel filter at 105,000 miles. Replace sooner if contaminated fuel is suspected.

Fuel system, including filler cap, tank, lines and connections

Inspect fuel lines every 30,000 miles. Check filler cap sealing. Ensure leak-free system.

Timing belt

Replace timing belt and tensioner every 105,000 miles. Failure can cause engine damage.

PCV system

For turbocharged models. Inspect nipple and filter in air cleaner hose at intervals.

Spark plugs

Replace spark plugs every 60,000 miles. Use correct type and tighten properly. Clean terminals and seals.

Working on your car

Battery

Ensure cables are connected. Do not disconnect when engine is running. Handle acid carefully.

Hoisting the car

Use designated jack attachment points. Always use axle stands. High voltage in ignition system.

Opening the hood

Release hood lock via lever under dash. Lift hood and press release control. Check closure.

Engine compartment

Identifies key components: expansion tank, reservoirs, radiator, air cleaner, battery, data plate.

Oils and Fluids

Oil quality

Meet ILSAC GF-2, ACEA A1, API SJ specs. Consider premium/synthetic oils for better protection/economy.

Checking the oil level

Check level every refueling. Park on level surface, wait 5 mins. Level between dipstick marks. Engine must be stopped.

Adding oil (topping up)

Add same oil type. Capacity varies by engine. Replace oil filter at every oil change. R-models have oil warning system.

Washer fluid reservoir

Locates reservoir in engine compartment. Holds approx. 6.8 US qts. Fill with antifreeze solvent in cold weather.

Coolant reservoir

Locates coolant reservoir. Check level is between expansion tank marks. Mixture 50% anti-freeze/water.

Changing coolant

Coolant normally not changed. Consult retailer if system drained. Use Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreeze only.

Clutch and brake fluid reservoir

Check fluid level is above MIN mark. Fluid type DOT 4+. Replace every 2 years or 30,000 miles.

Power steering fluid reservoir

Check fluid level between ADD and FULL marks. Use Volvo synthetic power steering fluid.

Label information

Details emission control info, vacuum routing, loads/tire pressures, model plate (VIN), and safety standards.

Dimensions and weights

Provides vehicle dimensions (length, width, height, wheelbase) and weight ratings (max loads, trailer weight).

Capacities

Lists fluid capacities: fuel tank, engine oil, transmission oil, power steering, washer fluid, brake fluid, AC.

Lubricants

Engine oil specs, transmission oil grades, power steering fluid type, and brake fluid type.

Cooling system

Coolant type and volume. Thermostat opening temperature.
