TheallnewS60is,atitsheart,adriverorientedcarmorethananypreviousVolvo.Itisdesigned

ApartfromthenewPedestrianDetectionwithFullAutoBrake,theVolvoS60hasasuiteofother
advancedsafetytechnology.TheseincludeCitySafetywhichreduces,andcanentirelyavoid,
lowspeedimpactsupto30km/h(19mph),DriverAlertControl(DAC)toalertdriverswhohave
becometiredordistracted,BlindSpotInformationSystem(BLIS)whichhelpsdetectvehiclesin

Twofivecylinderdieselmodels,the163PSD3and205PSD5,andthetoprange304PST6
petrol,areofferedatUKlaunch.Withinthefirstyear,themodelrangewillgrow,toinclude115PS
dieselDRIVeandthreenewpetrolmodelsthe240PST5,180PST4and150PST3.
ThepetrolenginesarenewfourcylinderGTDi(gasolineturbodirectinjection)units.The2.0litre
variantisthefirstengineintheworldtouseasheetsteelratherthanthemoreconventionalcast
ironturbocharger.Steelislighterandhaslowerheatradiation,improvingefficiency.Commenting
onthenew2.0fourcylinderGTDi,Volvo'svicepresidentofpowertrainengineeringDerekCrabb
says:‘Ifyou'dcomestraightfromastraightsixengine,you'dfeelathome.'TheGTDiengineswill
beavailablewithasixspeedPowershiftdualclutchsemiautomaticgearboxaswellasasix

ThecabinfeelisverySwedish.‘It'ssimpleandunclutteredwithnounnecessarygadgetry,'says

cent,to28.5mpg(EUcombined).ThisisthefirsttimethattheT6haseverbeenfittedtotheS60,
commensuratewithVolvo'sdesiretomaketheallnewS60thesportiestVolvoyet.
DesignedbyVolvoinSwedenbutbuiltinBridgend,Wales,theSI6(shortinline6)ispowerfuland
extremelycompact.Itisalsoveryclean,easilymeetingthelatestEuro5exhaustemission
standards.
In3.0litre(2953cc)T6turbochargedguise,asusedintheS60,itproducesmaximumtorqueover
averywiderevband(2100rpm4200rpm).Thisenablesthecartobedrivenatlowrevs,
economically,andyetcanstilldeliverenormousurge.
Theturbochargerisanunusualtwinscrolldevicethatallowsforexcellentlowrevpickup,
eliminatingtraditionalturbo‘lag',andyetalsodeliversenormousthrustwhenmaximum
performanceisdesired.Thetwinscrolltechnologyallowstheturbotooperateintwostages.The
inflowisdividedintotwolotsofthreecylinders,allowingforswifterresponseandasmallerturbo
unit.Everafter4800rpm,thereisonlyasmalldropoffintorque.
Therearetwinoverheadcamshaftsand24valves(fourpercylinder)toprovideoptimalengine
breathing.AVariableIntakeSystem(VIS)whichvariesbothintaketractlengthand,more
unusually,plenumvolumethroughtwothrottleflapvalvesboostslowendtorqueandhighend
power,furtherhelpingthebreathingcapabilityoftheengine.Forinstance,80percentofthe
vehicle'smaximumtorqueisavailableacrosstheentirerevrange.
Unusuallyinthissector,thesixcylinderengineisastraightsixnotaV6,whichisnormallyeasier
topackage.Astraightsixengine,asusedontheT6,isintrinsicallythesmoothestandmost
refinedofallengineconfigurations.
Thebiggestproblemwithastraightsixisthatthey'relonganddifficulttopackagetransversely.
‘Transverselymountedenginesaresaferthat'swhyweusethem,'saysDerekCrabb.‘They
reducetheriskofanenginepenetratingthepassengerloadspaceandalsocanbedesignedwith
morecrumplespaceinfrontandbehind,allowingthesafetysystemstoworkmoreeffectively.'
Moststraightsixengineswouldnotfitintoacar'senginebaycrossways;they'retoolong.Volvo
engineersovercamethisproblembymakingthenewSI6engineextremelycompactandmuch
shorterthanthestraightsixnorm.
ThekeywasanewandinnovativedrivesystemknownasREADRearEndAncillaryDrive.All
ancillaries,suchastheairconditioningcompressor,aredrivenbygearsattherearendofthe
crankshaftinthespaceabovethegearbox.Thealternatorisdirectdrivenandfittedontheengine
block.Theflywheeldamper,whichcompensatesforvibrationsinthesixcylinderengine's
relativelylongcrankshaft,isinsidetheengineblock.
Theresultisanextremelyshortengine,ofjust625mmonly3mmlongerthanVolvo'sfive
cylinderengine.Thissubstantiallyincreasesenginebayspace,sothestraightsixcanbefitted
crosswaysandtheexcellentcrashstructurecanbeconfiguredaroundit.TheSI6hasan
aluminiumblockandhead,andbotharestructurallyoptimisedtobalancelowweightandstiffness.
Eventhecamshaftcoverisstructural,allowingittoincorporatethecamshaftbearingcapsfor
furtherweightreduction.
OntheS60T6,asixspeedGeartronicautomaticgearboxandallwheeldrive(AWD)are
standard.
NewgenerationGTDiengines
DuringthefirstyearofS60production,anallnewfourcylinderGTDi(gasolineturbochargeddirect
injection)willbeadded.IntheUK,thiswillcomeinthreeguisesT5(240PS/320Nmoftorque),
T4(180PS/240Nm)andT3(150PS/240Nm).
ThisnewenginemotorreplacesVolvo'spreviousfivecylinderpetrolvariant,the2.0T.Directfuel
injectionimprovesperformance,response,economyandemissions.Thechoiceofusingfour
ratherthanfivecylindersreducesfriction,boostingeconomy.Yet,commentingonthe2.0version,
powertrainheadDerekCrabbsays,‘‘Ifyou'dcomestraightfromastraightsixengine,you'dfeel
athome.'
The2.0GTDi,asusedinthenewT5,hasanaluminiumblockandhead,andusestwinvariable
camshafts,operating16valves.Aworldfirstistheuseofsheetsteel,ratherthancastiron,forthe
turbocharger.Usingsheetsteelforboththeexhaustmanifoldandtheturbochargerreduces
weightandimprovesheatcontrol,boostingefficiency.Theturboisunusuallysmallthemarket's
smallestinrelationtoengineoutput.Asmallturboboostsengineresponseandcutsconsumption.
ThenewT5has33percentmorepowerthantheoutgoingfivecylinder2.0T,33percentmore
torqueandyetgivessubstantiallypercentbetterfueleconomy.Fulldetailswillberevealednearer
launch.
TheGTDienginecomesin1.6litre(T3andT4)and2.0litre(T5)capacities.The1.6engineshave
differentarchitecturesfromthe2.0andusecastironratherthansheetsteelturbos.
‘Enginedownsizingisoneofthebigindustrytrends,'saysDerekCrabb.‘Enginesaregetting
smallerincapacitybutthisisbalancedbytheuseofturbochargerstomaintain,orboost,
performance.'
Sharpengineresponseisakeyqualityofasportingcar,andCrabbsaysVolvohasworkedhardto
givealltheenginesnotjustthenewGTDisprightlyperformance.‘It'sanareawherewe
sometimesgetcriticised.Theengineshaveoftenbeenverypowerfulbutsometimesnotas
responsiveasrivalsportssaloons.AlltheS60enginesareeithernew,orupgraded,andakey
goalhasbeentogivethemgreaterresponsethroughtheenginerange.Wehavedonethisby
reworkingthebottomends,reducingfrictionandimprovingthebreathing.It'snotjustengineswe
havealsooverhauledthetransmissions.Thehighestlevelsofperformancewereanabsolute
priorityfortheallnewS60.'

TheT6modelismatedexclusivelytoVolvo'ssixspeedGeartronicgearbox,whichoffersbothfull

Geartronicasanoption,andcomewithasixspeedmanualgearboxasstandard.
ThemodernGeartronictransmissioncanbeusedeitherasafullautomaticorasaclutchless
manual.Inautomaticmode,gearchangesaresosmoothastobealmostimperceptible.The
sportsbuttonallowshigherrevsbeforeeachgearchange,slightlyfastershiftsandalsosharpens
kickdown.
Thesixspeedmanualimprovesbothperformanceandfueleconomy,andisasmoothshifting
clutchandstickshiftaimedatthosewhopreferchanginggearthemselves.
TheupcomingGTDiengines,onsalefromnextyear,willcomewithachoiceoftwinclutchsemi
automaticPowershifttransmissionorasixspeedmanualgearbox.ThePowershiftusestwo
clutchestoofferfastgearchanges.Itcanalsobeusedasafullautomaticbutbecausedriveis
continuallyengaged,itoffersexcellentfueleconomy.
TheDRIVemodelisonsalenextyearandwilluseasixspeedmanualgearboxasstandard.
AllWheelDrive
TheAWD(AllWheelDrive)systemstandardonT6improvesthehandlingandroadholdingby
apportioningtorquetoallfourwheels.Thecomputercontrolledsetupautomaticallysendstorque
tothewheelswithmostgrip,ensuringmaximumpossibletractionandprimarysafety.Thefront
toreartorquesplitchangesconstantlyfromzeroto100percent,frontorrear.Thesophisticated
electronicscontrolahydraulicclutchthatdeterminesthemosteffectivedistributionoftorque.
Sensorsmonitortheroadsurfaceandthepositionsofthesteering,brakeandaccelerator.In
normalconditionsonadrytarmacroad,almostallthepowerisdistributedtothefrontwheels.

SaysBakker:‘TheUKisnotonlyoneofourbiggestmarkets[thirdbiggestworldwidein2009]but

Thisisaworldfirstsafetytechnologythefirsttimethatanycarmakerhasofferedafeaturethat
specificallyavoidsacollisionwithapedestrian.Theradarandcamerabasedsystemcandetect
pedestriansinfrontofthecar,warnsthedriver,andthenautomaticallyactivatesthebrakesifthe
driverfailstorespondintime.
Unfortunatelypedestrianaccidentsareregularoccurrences.InEurope,14percentofalltraffic
fatalitiesarepedestrians.IntheUSAitis11percentandinChina,theproportionrisesto26per
cent.

PedestrianDetectionwithFullAutoBrakeusesanewlydevelopedradarunitintegratedintothe
car'sgrille,acamerafittedinfrontoftheinteriorrearviewmirror,andacentralcontrolunit.The
radardetectsanyobjectinfrontofthecaranddeterminesthedistancetoit.Thecamera
determineswhattypeofobjectitis.
Thankstothenewlydevelopeddualmoderadar'smuchwiderfieldofvision,pedestriansaboutto
stepintotheroadaredetected.Thesystemcandetectpedestrianswhoare80cmtalland
upwardssothatincludesolderchildren.
Ifapedestrianisdetected,thedriverfirstlyreceivesanaudiblewarningcombinedwithaflashing
lightinthewindscreen'sheadupdisplay.Atthesametime,thecar'sbrakesareprecharged.If
thedriverdoesnotreacttothewarningandanaccidentisimminent,fullbrakingpoweris
automaticallyapplied.
VolvohasworkedforfiveyearsonthedevelopmentofPedestrianDetectionwithFullAutoBrake.
Testcarshavebeeninoperationallovertheworldto'learn'allpossiblevariationsoftraffic
behaviour,roadconditionandclimate.‘We'vedrivenmorethanhalfamilliontestkilometresinreal
trafficto'train'thesystemtorecognisepedestrians'patternsofmovementandtheirappearance

Avoidsimpactsatspeedsbelow35km/h(21mph)
Halfofallpedestrianaccidentsoccuratspeedsbelow25km/h(15mph).PedestrianDetection
withFullAutoBrakecanavoidacollisionwithapedestrianatspeedsupto35km/h(21mph)ifthe
driverdoesnotreactintime.Athigherspeeds,thefocusisonreducingthecar'sspeedasmuch
aspossiblepriortotheimpact,reducingthelikelihoodofseriousinjuryordeath.

reducingit,'saysBroberg.
CollisionWarningwithFullAutoBrake
PedestrianDetectionisadevelopmentofVolvo'sCollisionWarningsystem,whichusesthenose
mountedradarandcameratowarndriversifthey'reabouttohitanothervehicle,andapplythe
brakesautomaticallyifnecessary.
UnlikePedestrianDetection,andCitySafety,thisautomaticbrakingtechnologyisdesignedfor
higherspeed,suchasthatencounteredonmotorways.Aradarsensorfittedbehindthegrille,and
adigitalcamerabehindthewindscreen,automaticallymonitorthedistancetothevehicleinfront.If
thevehicleinfrontsuddenlybrakes,orisstationary,oryouaretravellingtooclosetoit,ared
warninglightflashesonthewindscreenandawarningbuzzersounds.Thebrakingsystemisalso
automaticallyprechargedtoprepareforpanicbraking:thepadsmoveveryclosetothediscsand
thehydraulicbrakepressureisincreased.Ifthedriverdoesnotreacttothewarningsanda
collisionisimminent,automaticbrakingisappliedtoreducetheseverityoftheaccident.
AswithPedestrianDetection,thiscanavoidcollisionsupto35km/h(21mph)andreducethe
severityoftheimpactatspeedsoverthat.
Automaticbrakingisonlyappliedasalastresort.‘Wegivethedriveramplewarning,'says
Broberg.‘It'sonlywhentheydon'trespond,orit'stoolate,willautomaticbrakingtakeover.'
CitySafetyprevents,ormitigates,lowspeedurbanaccidents
CitySafety,atechnologyfirstshownontheXC60andnowfeaturedasstandardontheS60,
avoidslowspeedaccidents.Statistically,theyarethemostcommontypesofcrash.These
accidentstypicallyhappenintownsandtheytypicallyinvolvetailbacksoftraffic.CitySafetyeither
eliminatessuchaccidentsorreducestheseverityoftheimpact.

CitySafetyworksatspeedsbelow30km/h(19mph).Alasersensor,fittedbehindtherearview
mirrorandlookingthroughthewindscreen,keepsaneyeontrafficinfrontofthevehicle.Itcan
detectvehiclesandotherobjectsuptosixmetres(approximately30feet)infrontofthecar'sfront
bumper.CitySafetyreactstovehiclesinfrontoftheXC60thatareeitherstationaryormovingin
thesamedirection.
Basedonthegaptothevehicleinfrontandthecar'sownspeed,thesystemmakes50
calculationspersecondtodeterminewhatbrakingforcewouldbeneededtoavoidacollision.If
thecalculatedbrakingforceexceedsacertainlevelwithoutthedriverresponding,thesystem
determinesthattheriskofacollisionisimminent.
CitySafetyhelpseitheravoidorreducetheseverityofthecollisionbyautomaticallybrakingthe
carandreducingthethrottleopening.Atthesametime,thebrakelightsareautomatically
activatedtowarnothertraffic.
AccordingtoThomasBroberg:‘CitySafetyautomaticallybrakesatthelastpossiblemomentat
thepointofnoreturn.Thisisthepointwhere,ifCitySafetywerenotactivated,therewouldbean
accident.Ourstudiesshowthatifthespeeddifferencewiththecarinfrontisunder15km/h
(9mph)thenCitySafetyshouldavoidanaccidententirely.Ifthespeeddifferenceisgreater,then
anaccidentwillprobablyhappen,buttheseveritywillbesubstantiallyreduced.'

AdaptiveCruiseControlwithDistanceAlert
Tohelpthedrivermaintainasafedistancefromthecarinfront,VolvohasdevelopedAdaptive
CruiseControl(ACC).Itusesaradarsensortocontinuouslymeasurethedistancetothevehicle
infrontandautomaticallyadaptsthespeedofthecartohelpensurethedistanceisnottooshort.
ThistechnologyalsoformsthebasisofseveralofVolvo'sadvanceddrivingandsupportsystems,
includingCollisionWarning,andPedestrianDetection,withAutoBrake.
Thedriveractivatesthecruisecontrol,settingthedesiredmaximumspeedatbetween18and
125mph,andchoosestheminimumtimeintervaltothecarsinfront.Therearefivedifferenttime
intervalstochoosefrom.
DistanceAlertisanotherfeatureincludedinthisoption.Thesystemhelpsthedrivermaintaina
safedistancetothevehicleinfrontevenwhenAdaptiveCruiseControlisnotinuse.Activatedvia
abuttononthecentreconsole,thedrivercanchoosebetweenfivesettings.Ifthetimegaptothe
carinfrontgetsshorterthantheselectedspeed,thedrivergetsvisualinformationintheheadup

forheatingitsEuropeanfactories(SwedenandBelgium)and,from1January2008,Volvo's
EuropeanmanufacturingunitsincludingtheGhent,BelgiumfactorywheretheS60ismade,now

TheenginesinthenewVolvoS60areallveryeconomical,giventhesportynatureofthecar.A

Furthermore,Volvo'sCleanZoneInteriorPackage(CZIP)featuresanautomaticairpurging
system.Whenthecarisunlockedbytheremotecontrol,thepassengercompartmentis
automaticallyventilatedforaboutoneminuteiftheoutsideairtemperatureisabove10degrees
Celsius.Carefullyselectedtrimmaterials,whichminimizeemissionsofharmfulsubstances,
furtherhelptoprovidecabinairofacleanlinessapprovedbytheSwedishAsthmaandAllergy
