FAQ
Why is my tablet no longer working over Bluetooth or not showing up under Bluetooth settings
when in pairing mode?
The Bluetooth settings may have been become corrupt. To fix this issue, manually reset the
temporary memory on the Wacom Intuos Pro by following the steps below. Note: Drawing files
saved to the tablet memory will not be effected during this reset.
Directly to the right of the power button is a small pin hole which contains a reset button. To
reset the Wacom Intuos Pro, use the reverse side of the Pro Pen 2’s Nib to reset the tablet. Insert
the reversed Nib straight into the hole and press firmly feeling the reset button depress. Hold for
10-15 seconds until the power light on the tablet turns off, then release. Once released the tablet
will turn back on, and the memory on the tablet is now reset to default. Note: On the Wacom
Intuos Pro S tablet you find the pen hole with the reset button on the same slide as the touch
on/off slider.
What does the error message “A supported tablet is not found on the system” mean and how do I
fix it?
This error is given with the driver does not see a supported tablet connected to the computer.
First, please make sure the USB cable for the tablet is connected directly to the computer and the
tablet is powered on. Avoid using USB hubs, keyboard/monitor ports, or docking station as these
can cause intermittent issues.
*If on windows, please make sure when connecting the tablet, the Windows device driver installs
and says the installation is complete before using the tablet. If it does not install or gives an error,
try running your Windows updates with the tablet disconnected and restart the computer, then try
connecting the tablet again.
Once connected if you continue to receive the supported tablet error message, the driver
currently installed may be the incorrect driver for the tablet. For example, the Intuos 3 tablets are
no longer supported on the current Wacom driver, the last supported driver for that tablet is the
6.3.15 driver. Please make sure you are using the correct driver for your tablet found on the
Wacom Driver page.
If the issue continues, or if you receive no power light on the tablet when connected, please
contact Wacom Support.

Tablet Driver Not Responding Error

Overview

This document provides a comprehensive FAQ for Wacom tablets, addressing common issues related to Bluetooth connectivity, pen pressure, and driver functionality. It offers detailed troubleshooting steps and explanations to help users resolve problems and optimize their tablet's performance.

Function Description:

Wacom tablets are input devices designed for digital art, graphic design, and other creative tasks, offering precise pen input and pressure sensitivity. They connect to computers via USB or Bluetooth, allowing users to interact with software applications using a specialized pen. The tablets are designed to provide a natural and intuitive drawing experience, mimicking traditional pen-on-paper interaction.

Usage Features:

Bluetooth Connectivity:

Wacom tablets, particularly models like the Intuos Pro (PTH-660x, PTH860x) and Intuos (CTL-4100x, CTL-6100x), utilize Bluetooth for wireless connection to a computer. This offers flexibility and reduces cable clutter. However, Bluetooth connections can be slower than USB and may experience lag or connection issues due to interference or environmental factors.

To optimize Bluetooth performance:

  • Built-in Bluetooth: Ensure your computer has a built-in Bluetooth antenna. If not, a Bluetooth adapter is required.
  • Proximity: Keep the tablet close to the computer, ensuring a clear line of sight without obstacles or interference.
  • Bluetooth Version: Use a compatible Bluetooth version, with 4.0 or higher recommended, and a minimum of 2.1 required.
  • Driver and Firmware: Regularly check for and install the latest driver and firmware updates via the Wacom Desktop Center.
  • Operating System Updates: Keep your operating system (Windows and macOS) updated to the latest version.
  • Signal Strength (macOS): On macOS, you can check your Bluetooth signal strength (RSSI). Hold the Option key while clicking the Bluetooth menu, select your device, and view the RSSI value. An RSSI between 0 and -50dbm indicates good performance. Move the tablet closer to improve RSSI.
  • Minimize Interference: Reduce sources of interference, such as other Bluetooth devices (especially those transferring large amounts of data like headphones or speakers), Wi-Fi routers, or other electronic devices.
  • Unpair Devices: Unpair other Bluetooth devices that might be causing interference.

Pen Pressure Sensitivity:

Pen pressure is a key feature of Wacom tablets, allowing for varying line thickness and opacity based on how hard the pen is pressed. If pen pressure is not working, it could be due to application settings, driver issues, or hardware defects.

Troubleshooting pen pressure:

  • Driver Installation: Verify that the correct and latest Wacom driver is installed from the Wacom Driver page and that the tablet is properly connected.
  • Reset Driver Preferences: Resetting driver preferences can resolve issues caused by specific settings.
  • Driver Reinstallation: Uninstall and reinstall the Wacom Driver following the provided steps for Windows or Mac OS.
  • Test in Different Software: Check if the issue is isolated to one program. If so, try resetting that program's preferences.
  • Adobe Photoshop: For Photoshop-specific pressure issues, refer to the dedicated troubleshooting guide.
  • Diagnostics Panel: Use the diagnostics window to check for hardware issues and monitor the current pressure status of your device.

Driver Functionality:

Users may encounter error messages such as "A supported tablet is not found on the system" or "The tablet driver is not responding." These indicate issues with the tablet's connection or the driver's communication with the operating system.

Troubleshooting driver issues:

  • "A supported tablet is not found on the system":
    • USB Connection: Ensure the USB cable is connected directly to the computer, avoiding USB hubs, keyboard/monitor ports, or docking stations, which can cause intermittent issues.
    • Tablet Power: Confirm the tablet is powered on.
    • Windows Device Driver: On Windows, ensure the device driver installs completely when connecting the tablet. If not, run Windows updates with the tablet disconnected, restart, and then reconnect the tablet.
    • Correct Driver: Verify that the correct driver for your specific tablet model is installed from the Wacom Driver page. Older tablets, like Intuos 3, may require older driver versions (e.g., 6.3.15).
    • Contact Support: If issues persist or there's no power light on the tablet, contact Wacom Support.
  • "The tablet driver is not responding":
    • Restart Computer: Restart your computer to resolve temporary communication issues.
    • Driver Reinstallation: If the error persists, uninstall and reinstall the latest driver. Ensure all Windows updates are run before reinstallation.
    • New Admin User: If the issue continues, uninstall the driver, restart, create a new Admin user on the computer, restart again, log in with the new user, install the driver, and test. If the tablet works, migrate your data to this new account.
    • Contact Support: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, contact Wacom Support.

Windows Ink and Scrolling/Panning Issues:

Microsoft Windows updates (KB4093112 & KB4089848) have introduced changes to Windows Ink settings, affecting pen and touch devices. This can cause issues like scrolling instead of drawing in Photoshop or selection problems in Outlook/web browsers.

  • Windows 10 April Update: This issue has been fixed with the Windows 10 April Update. Users should download and install this update via Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Disabling Windows Ink (Workaround): As a temporary workaround, Windows Ink can be disabled in Wacom Settings:
    • Connect your Wacom device.
    • Open Wacom Desktop Center.
    • Select Pen Settings to open Wacom Tablet Properties.
    • Go to the Mapping tab and uncheck "Use Windows Ink."
    • Note: Some applications, like Adobe Photoshop, require Windows Ink for pressure sensitivity. To enable it for specific programs, add the application under the "Application" section in Wacom Tablet Properties, select the pen tool, go to the mapping tab, and ensure "Use Windows Ink" is selected for that application.

Maintenance Features:

Resetting Tablet Memory (Intuos Pro):

If Bluetooth connectivity issues persist, resetting the tablet's temporary memory can help. This process does not affect drawing files saved to the tablet memory.

  • Location: Locate the small pinhole containing the reset button, usually to the right of the power button. On Intuos Pro S, it's on the same slide as the touch on/off slider.
  • Procedure: Use the reverse side of the Pro Pen 2's Nib. Insert it straight into the hole and press firmly until the reset button depresses. Hold for 10-15 seconds until the power light turns off, then release. The tablet will turn back on, and its memory will be reset to default.

Driver and Firmware Updates:

Regularly checking for and installing the latest driver and firmware updates through the Wacom Desktop Center is crucial for optimal performance and compatibility with operating system changes.

Operating System Updates:

Keeping your computer's operating system (Windows or macOS) updated is important, as Wacom drivers are designed to work with the latest OS versions, and OS updates often include fixes for device compatibility.

Cleaning and Environment:

While not explicitly detailed, maintaining a clean workspace and ensuring the tablet is free from dust and debris can contribute to its longevity and consistent performance. Minimizing environmental interference (e.g., from other electronic devices) is also key for stable Bluetooth connections.
