Do you have a question about the wallas 85 DT and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Wallas 85 Dt / Nordic Dt is a safe, open-flame-free diesel stove designed for marine and cottage use. It features a single burner that operates on either diesel oil or light furnace oil. The stove draws air for combustion from the boat's interior and expels exhaust gases using a combustion air blower. This design ensures that the air within the boat circulates, remaining fresh and dry, as steam from the flue gas is discharged outside, preventing an increase in interior humidity.

Function Description

The stove's fuel pump precisely dispenses fuel, while electronic controls automatically regulate combustion air and fuel quantity to maintain a clean-burning flame. Upon activation, a glow plug in the burner ignites the pumped fuel. The glow time is fixed and automatically controlled, ensuring consistent ignition. A heat sensor in the stove detects the flame's heat and illuminates a red LED light to indicate successful ignition.

Heat generated from fuel combustion is transferred to a ceramic stove top. The left side of the stove top is hotter due to the burner's location beneath it. The stove's power can be adjusted steplessly, with the control simultaneously adjusting both sides of the stove. When switched off, the stove automatically enters a cooling phase, during which the cooling fan ventilates the burner and discharges any residual flue gases outside the boat. This prevents the accumulation of soot and ensures a clean shutdown.

The 85 Dt / Nordic Dt is suitable for various cooking tasks and heating purposes, making it a versatile appliance. It is constructed entirely from stainless steel, ensuring durability and resistance to corrosion in marine environments.

Usage Features

The stove offers several features for convenient and safe operation:

  • Ignition: The stove starts and heats automatically. Pressing the heating switch (3) for at least 2 seconds initiates the process, and the power indicator light (4) illuminates. Releasing the switch after 2 seconds activates normal mode, with the yellow heating indicator light (7) turning on. Holding the switch for 10 seconds activates high altitude mode. The red combustion indicator light (1) illuminates after about five minutes, signaling stable combustion. The entire ignition process takes approximately 11 minutes.
  • Thermostat Operation (with blower lid accessory): This feature allows automatic power adjustment based on a set temperature. It requires a heat blower lid (accessory) and functions when the lid is folded over the ceramic top. To activate, turn the power control knob (2) to min-max-min-max positions while the yellow heating indicator (7) is on. The thermostat indicator light (5) will illuminate to confirm activation. Turning the knob again deactivates the thermostat, returning to manual mode. The temperature is adjusted via the power control knob (2). A bright thermostat light (5) indicates the cabin temperature is below the set point, increasing power. A dim light indicates the set temperature has been reached.
  • Sun-Switch (Heating): This feature automatically shuts down the stove if the cabin temperature rises above the set point, for example, due to sunlight. The temperature must rise by +3 °C above the set value for at least half an hour. A blinking thermostat indicator light (5) signals that the sun-switch has activated. It can be temporarily deactivated by turning the temperature control knob (2).
  • Conservation Temperature: When the temperature control (2) is set to minimum, the cabin temperature is maintained between +2 °C and +8 °C. The sun-switch is not active in this mode.
  • Manual Power Adjustment (Stove/Heating): Power can be adjusted manually by turning the power control knob (2). This mode is activated by turning the knob to min-max-min-max positions, and the thermostat indicator light (5) will turn off. Avoid rapid back-and-forth adjustments to prevent sooting.
  • Shutdown: To turn off the stove, press the heating switch (3) continuously for at least 2 seconds. The yellow heating indicator (7) turns off immediately. The red combustion indicator (1) blinks for about five minutes during the cooling phase. The stove cannot be restarted until the cooling phase is complete.
  • High Altitude Switch: This feature is activated when operating above 1500 meters (5000 feet) above sea level. It increases combustion air to compensate for thinner air. To activate, press the heating switch (3) for 10 seconds during ignition. The yellow heating indicator (7) will flash three times to confirm activation.
  • Signal Lights: The stove uses various LED lights to indicate operational status and potential faults, including:
    • Yellow: Heating on
    • Red: Combustion indicator (normal operation), Aftercooling
    • Orange: Thermostat control (power increasing/decreasing), Sun switch activated
    • Blinking patterns indicate specific faults like glow failure, blower faults, undervoltage, flameout, overheat, and locking.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the stove's longevity and optimal performance:

  • Cleaning and Maintaining the Stove Top: Clean the ceramic stove top regularly, preferably after each use. Scrape off visible dirt with a cleaning spatula, apply ceramic cleaner, and wipe with paper towels, then a damp cloth, and finally a dry cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, aluminum foil, plastic, sugar, or sugary substances that have melted on the surface.
  • Basic Maintenance (Diesel-Operated Devices):
    • First Inspection: After the first 500 hours of use or the first season, a basic inspection of functions and burner cleaning is recommended by an authorized Wallas service shop.
    • Special Recommendations: Occasional (monthly) use helps purge old fuel, improving reliability.
    • Fuel Type and Moisture Removal: If using the boat's main tank, follow the engine manufacturer's recommendations for fuel type and moisture removal. If using a separate tank, observe the fuel supplier's temperature limits.
    • Water Removal from Tank: Isopropanol-based anti-ice detergent (not ethylene or methyl-based) should be added to the fuel during the season, especially after a few tanks and at the beginning and end of the heating season. This binds condensed water and prevents sediment formation.
    • Winter Storage: If using the main tank, change the fuel filter and follow the boat/engine manufacturer's winterization procedures. If using a separate tank, drain the tank in autumn, clean it, change the filter, and refill with fresh fuel in spring. No specific maintenance is needed for the stove itself.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides detailed troubleshooting flowcharts for various fault signals, including locking indication, undervoltage, flameout, and overheat. Instructions for unlocking the device after a fault are also provided.
  • Spare Parts: A list of spare parts is available on www.wallas.com.
  • Insulation Kits: For metal-hulled boats, insulation kits (e.g., 2461, 602308) are available to insulate the lead-through and the device from the hull, preventing electrochemical corrosion and electrical faults.
  • Drainage Lock (602293): Recommended for deck lead-throughs and exhaust gas tubes longer than 2 meters to remove splash water and condensation.
  • Closable Lead-through (2466): This accessory allows the exhaust lead-through to be closed when not in use. It requires proper installation and yearly lubrication of seals to prevent hardening. Ensure it is open before starting the device.

The Wallas 85 Dt / Nordic Dt is designed for robust performance and ease of maintenance, ensuring a reliable cooking and heating solution for marine and cottage environments.
