Overview

This document is an owner's manual for WaterAce Pedestal Series Sump Pumps, specifically covering models WA33PPED and WA50CPED with vertical switches.

Function Description

The WaterAce Pedestal Series Sump Pumps are electrical devices designed for high-volume water removal from basement sump pits. They are intended to operate in inherently wet environments, making them suitable for managing water accumulation in sumps to prevent flooding. The pumps are equipped with a vertical switch for automatic operation based on water levels.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Sump Basin Requirements: The pump must be installed in a suitable, gas-tight, properly vented basin at least 24" deep and 14" wide for vertical on/off switches.
  • Placement: The pump should be placed on a hard surface, cleared of debris, and ideally on two bricks (approximately 2" apart) to prevent it from resting on clay, earth, or gravel.
  • Piping: Discharge piping can be PVC, polypipe, or galvanized steel. It is recommended that the discharge pipe diameter be equal to or larger than the pump's discharge size. A check valve should be connected to the discharge port.
  • Electrical Connection:
    • Requires a separately fused, grounded line with a minimum capacity of 15 amps, or a 15 amp circuit breaker/fuse block.
    • A permanent ground connection from the pump to the service panel's grounding bar is mandatory.
    • The pump comes with a grounding conductor and a grounding-type attachment plug.
    • For maximum safety, connect to a circuit equipped with a fault interrupter device.
    • Verify that the pump's voltage and frequency match the mains supply.
    • For outdoor use, an 8-foot cable is required, and the plug/connection must be protected from water splashes.
    • Safety Warnings: Do not use extension cords, cut the ground pin, or use adapter fittings. Do not work on the pump or switch while plugged in. Do not remove motor housing, unscrew impeller, or remove impeller seal. Do not run the pump continuously, pump chemicals, corrosive liquids, gasoline, or other flammable liquids.
  • Overload Protection: The pump series includes a built-in thermal protection switch. If an overload occurs, the pump will stop and automatically restart after cooling down.

Safety:

  • General Safety: Always use extreme caution when installing or maintaining the product due to its operation in wet environments. Wear safety glasses.
  • Risk of Burns: Operating motors can reach high temperatures; allow 20 minutes for cooling before servicing.
  • Freezing: Do not allow the pump or system components to freeze, as this will void the warranty.
  • Water Pumping: Pump water only.
  • Explosion Risk: Do not use as a booster pump.
  • Sump Basin Venting: The sump basin must be vented according to local plumbing codes.
  • Hazardous Locations: These pumps are not designed for or to be installed in hazardous locations.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Periodic Inspection: Periodically inspect the pump and system components.
  • Safety Labels: Keep safety labels in good condition and replace any missing or damaged ones.

Troubleshooting (with possible causes and solutions):

  • Pump Does Not Run and Makes Humming Sound:
    • Line circuit breaker off/fuse blown/loose.
    • Water level not at turn-on level.
    • Pump cord not making contact.
    • Float is stuck.
    • Motor malfunctioning.
  • Pump Runs But Does Not Deliver Water:
    • Check valve installed backward (arrow should point direction of flow).
    • Discharge shut-off valve closed.
    • Impeller or volute openings clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Pump is air-locked (start/stop several times, check vent hole).
    • Inlet holes in pump base clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Vertical pumping distance too high (reduce distance or change discharge fittings).
  • Pump Runs and Pumps Out Sump, But Does Not Stop:
    • Float is stuck in up position.
    • Defective float switch (replace).
  • Pump Runs But Only Delivers a Small Amount of Water:
    • Pump is air-locked (start/stop several times, check vent hole).
    • Vertical pumping distance too high (reduce distance or change discharge fitting).
    • Inlet holes in pump base clogged (remove pump and clean strainer/openings).
    • Impeller or volute openings clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Pump impeller partially clogged with tar/paint (remove pump and clean).
  • Fuse Blows or Circuit Breaker Trips When Pump Starts:
    • Pump impeller partially clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Motor stator defective.
    • Fuse size or circuit breaker too small (must be 15 amps).
    • Impeller or volute opening clogged (remove pump and clean).
  • Motor Runs for a Short Time, Then Stops:
    • Inlet holes in pump base clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Pump impeller partially clogged (remove pump and clean).
    • Motor stator defective.
    • Impeller or volute openings clogged (remove pump and clean strainer).

Electrical Precautions for Maintenance:

  • Always shut off the main power breaker and unplug the pump before servicing.
  • Ensure you are not standing in water and are wearing insulated protective sole shoes under flooded conditions.
  • Contact your local electric company or a qualified licensed electrician for disconnecting electrical service prior to pump removal if necessary.
