In this trio of MasterSeries assemblies, LF880V-FS and LF886V-FS
are each equipped with an integrated flood sensor that detects
excessive relief valve discharges and triggers notification of
potential flood events. An add-on sensor connection kit activates
the alert system for use with building management systems or
cellular communication networks. A retrofit sensor connection kit
is available for existing installations. See “Add-on and Retrofit
Sensor Connection Kits,” at the end of this document for the
qualifying series and valve sizes.

Overview

This document is an installation, maintenance, and repair manual for the FEBCO Series 880V, LF880V-FS, and LF886V-FS backflow prevention assemblies. These include Reduced Pressure Zone Assemblies and Reduced Pressure Detector Assemblies, available in sizes from 2½" to 10".

Function Description

The FEBCO Series 880V, LF880V-FS, and LF886V-FS are designed to protect potable water supplies from contamination due to backpressure or backsiphonage. These assemblies are critical components in water distribution systems, ensuring that non-potable water does not enter the public water supply.

The LF880V-FS and LF886V-FS models are enhanced with an integrated flood sensor. This sensor detects excessive relief valve discharges, which can indicate a potential flood event, and triggers a notification system. This feature adds an extra layer of protection by alerting users to potential water damage or system malfunctions.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models: Series 880V, LF880V-FS, LF886V-FS
  • Types: Reduced Pressure Zone Assemblies, Reduced Pressure Detector Assemblies
  • Sizes: 2½" – 10" (6.3 cm to 25.4 cm)
  • Minimum Supply Pressure: At least 20 psi (138 kPa) is recommended for system supply pressure.
  • Flood Sensor (LF880V-FS, LF886V-FS): Integrated sensor to detect excessive relief valve discharges.
  • Connectivity Options:
    • BMS Sensor Connection Kit (FP-FBF-BMS-21/2-10, Part #88009414): For new installations, activates the integrated flood sensor and enables flood detection capabilities on the relief valve, linking to a Building Management System (BMS) controller (not included). Includes sensor activation module with cable, ground wire, and power adapter.
    • BMS Sensor Retrofit Connection Kit (FP-RFK-FBF-BMS-CFS-21/2-10, Part #88009415): For existing installations, installs a flood sensor and enables flood detection capabilities on the relief valve, linking to a BMS controller (not included). Includes flood sensor with mounting hardware, sensor activation module with cable, ground wire, and power adapter.
    • Cellular Sensor Connection Kit (FP-FBF-CFS-21/2-10, Part #88009416): For new installations, activates the integrated flood sensor and enables flood detection capabilities on the relief valve, linking to a cellular network to send alerts via email, SMS, or voice call. Includes sensor activation module with cable, Cellular Gateway with mounting kit, ground wire, and power adapter.
    • Cellular Sensor Retrofit Connection Kit (FP-RFK-FBF-CFS-21/2-10, Part #88009417): For existing installations, installs a flood sensor and enables flood detection capabilities on the relief valve, linking to a cellular network to send alerts via email, SMS, or voice call. Includes flood sensor with mounting hardware, sensor activation module with cable, Cellular Gateway with mounting kit, ground wire, and power adapter.
  • Construction: Lift rings cast into the valve body for lifting. Optional valve setters for horizontal units provide rigid connection to the supply line without concrete thrust blocks.
  • Air Gap Fitting: Accommodates normal discharge and nuisance spitting. Not designed for maximum discharge from the relief valve.
  • Pipe Support: For vertical installations, a pipe support (furnished by the customer) is required for the outlet check.

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: Can be installed in N-pattern (horizontal) or vertical configurations. Gate valves can be rotated as permitted by the flange bolt pattern.
  • Accessibility: Designed for accessibility for periodic testing and maintenance. Minimum clearances are recommended for exterior, interior, pit, or vault installations, though local codes should be consulted for actual requirements.
  • Flood Detection (LF880V-FS, LF886V-FS): The integrated flood sensor provides early warning of excessive relief valve discharges, helping to prevent water damage. This feature can be integrated with building management systems or cellular communication networks for remote alerts.
  • Pre-installation Flushing: It is crucial to flush the supply line of foreign material before installing the valve to prevent fouling of check valves.
  • Air Bleeding: After installation, the assembly should be slowly filled with water, and air bled from the body using test cocks No. 3 and No. 4 to ensure correct operation.
  • Protection: The assembly must be protected from freezing and excessive pressure increases (e.g., thermal expansion, water hammer) to prevent damage.

Maintenance Features

  • Periodic Inspection/Maintenance: This product requires periodic testing in compliance with local codes, at least once per year, or more frequently if service conditions warrant. All products must be retested after maintenance.
  • Internal Component Cleaning: Regular checking and cleaning of internal components are essential for maximum life and proper function. Corrosive water conditions or unauthorized adjustments/repairs can render the product ineffective.
  • Check Valve Disassembly:
    1. Close inlet and outlet shutoff valves.
    2. Bleed residual pressure using test cocks No. 4, No. 3, and No. 2.
    3. Remove cover nuts and bolts, then lift the cover (springs are retained, cover pushes away ~¼ inch).
    4. Inspect parts, clean debris from disc and seat ring, and replace worn/damaged parts.
    5. Replace cover, ensuring spring assembly is in pivot socket. FDA-approved grease can be used on the O-ring groove to hold the O-ring in place.
    6. Install and tighten bolts and nuts.
  • Relief Valve Disassembly:
    1. Detach the activation module (if installed) from the flood sensor.
    2. Remove the sensor from the relief valve using two ½" wrenches.
    3. Remove cap screws, then the cover from the relief valve body.
    4. Remove the diaphragm and pull the internal assembly from the body (can push through discharge opening).
    5. Inspect for debris, damage, or fouling of the seat disc. Clean or replace the rubber disc.
    6. Reposition internal assembly and diaphragm into the body.
    7. Install cover and cap screws.
    8. Reattach the flood sensor to the relief valve and mount the activation module to the sensor.
  • General Maintenance Guidelines:
    • Rinse all parts with clean water before reassembly.
    • Do not use pipe dope, oil, grease, or solvent on parts unless instructed.
    • Do not force parts; they should fit freely.
    • Carefully inspect seals and seating surfaces for debris or damage.
    • After servicing, repressurize and test the assembly for proper operation.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Continuous relief valve discharge: Caused by debris on check seating surfaces or relief valve surfaces. Solution: Disassemble and clean.
    • Intermittent relief valve discharge: Caused by inlet pressure fluctuations or downstream pressure surges. Solution: Eliminate fluctuations or surges.
  • Testing: Check the ASSE Series 5000 manual for appropriate test methods consistent with local codes. All assemblies are factory-tested for proper operation and leakage. Field test failures are often due to fouled check valves, not covered by factory warranty.
