The Welby Body Fat Scale+ is a complete body analysis scale designed for personal home use, offering more than just weight measurement. It provides comparative measurements of body fat, body water, muscle mass, and bone mass, helping users track various aspects of their body composition. The scale is not a medical product and is not intended for clinical use or medical diagnosis; any health concerns should be discussed with a licensed healthcare provider.

Function Description

The core functionality of the Welby Body Fat Scale+ revolves around bioelectric impedance analysis. The standing area of the scale is equipped with electrodes that measure the body's electrical resistance. Lean body tissue has a lower resistance than fatty body tissue, allowing the scale to differentiate between them. Based on these measurements, the scale automatically calculates and displays the percentage of body fat, body water, muscle mass, and bone mass in relation to total body weight. These values are then compared to the user's body height, age, sex, and total weight to provide a comprehensive body analysis.

The scale also includes an "Athlete mode" for well-trained and muscular individuals. This mode is crucial because muscle cells have a similar bioelectric resistance to fat cells. Without this special setting, the scale might incorrectly interpret a large muscle mass as fat. The athlete mode uses a different mathematical formula to ensure accurate body fat measurements for this user group, preventing misinterpretation.

Usage Features

To use the scale, users first need to insert a 3V button cell battery (CR 2032). The battery is pre-inserted at the factory, and users simply need to pull a protective foil to activate the device. For battery replacement, the battery compartment cover under the device needs to be opened, ensuring the correct polarity (+/– terminals) when inserting a new battery. After battery insertion and compartment closure, the scale should be placed on the floor, and a small weight applied until it switches off, indicating calibration. If the display shows "Lo" or its intensity decreases, the battery needs replacement.

Before performing a body analysis measurement, users must save their personal data, including sex, body structure, age, and height. The scale offers twelve memory spaces for this purpose. To enter data, users press the power button, then "SET," select a memory space using the up/down buttons, and confirm with "SET." They then select sex and body structure (with the athlete symbol appearing if athlete mode is chosen) and confirm with "SET." Finally, age and height (in inches) are selected and confirmed with "SET." The display will show the entered data, and the weight display will be set to zero, ready for measurement. Memory values can be deleted by pressing the power button, selecting the desired memory space, and simultaneously pressing the up and down buttons.

For accurate body analysis, users must stand barefoot on the measuring points (electrodes) on the scale, ensuring their feet are dry and free of lotions or moisturizers. They should stand with straight legs, without bending their knees, and ensure their knees do not touch each other. To initiate a measurement, the user presses the power button, waits for "0.0" to display, selects their memory space, and then stands on the scale. The scale will automatically measure weight, display it along with personal data, and then proceed to calculate and display body fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle mass percentage, bone mass percentage, and daily calorie requirement. The measured values will be shown multiple times before the scale automatically switches off.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the device is straightforward: only mild soap solutions should be used. Chemical solutions and cleaning products are to be avoided as they can damage the device's surface or markings. After cleaning, the scale must be dried completely to prevent slipping.

For disposal, the device's packaging materials are recyclable and should be kept out of reach of children. At the end of its life, the scale itself should not be disposed of in normal household trash. Users should consult their local authority for eco-friendly disposal methods. Before disposal, the battery must be removed. Used batteries should not be thrown in household trash but taken to a collection point for used batteries.
