Your chuck is designed to aid in holding wooden
workpieces on your lathe, and is capable of gripping
on both the outside and inside of various workpieces.
EXTERNAL GRIP VS INTERNAL GRIP
The external grip is applied on the exterior of the
workpiece, while the internal grip is applied on the
interior of the workpiece. See Figures 1 & 2.
DOVETAIL JAWS
Your chuck has dovetailed jaws that are suitable for
gripping a recess or tenon prepared in your work-
piece for clamping. Ensure that the recess or tenon
prepared has a flat base so that it can rest flush
against the flat surface of the chuck jaws. For the di-
mensions of your chuck’s dovetailed jaws, see Fig. 3.

Overview

The WEN LA4275 is a 2.75-inch 4-jaw self-centering lathe chuck designed to securely hold wooden workpieces on a lathe. It is compatible with all WEN wood lathes and any other wood lathe with a 1-inch diameter, 8 threads per inch (1"-8) headstock spindle.

Function Description:

The primary function of the LA4275 chuck is to provide a reliable gripping mechanism for various wooden workpieces, allowing for both external and internal gripping. Its self-centering design ensures that the workpiece is automatically centered when clamped, simplifying setup and improving turning accuracy. The chuck is equipped with dovetailed jaws, specifically designed to grip recesses or tenons prepared in the workpiece. This allows for secure clamping of bowls, platters, and other items that require a strong, concentric hold. The chuck also includes a screw chuck attachment, which is particularly useful for mounting larger workpieces by screwing them directly onto the chuck.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Chuck Size: 2.75 inches
  • Jaw Type: Dovetail
  • Number of Jaws: 4
  • Self-Centering: Yes
  • Mounting Thread: 1"-8 (compatible with 1-inch diameter, 8 threads per inch headstock spindles)
  • Screw Chuck Thread: M8-3.0x20
  • External Grip Range (Fig. 1): 1-1/8" to 1-3/4"
  • Internal Grip Range (Fig. 2): 1-1/2" to 2-1/8"
  • Screw Chuck Pilot Hole Requirement: Approximately 31mm (1-7/32") deep, drilled with a 3/8" drill bit.
  • Jaw Dimensions (Fig. 3):
    • Jaw Carriage width: 5mm
    • Jaw length (overall): 19.45mm
    • Jaw length (gripping surface): 17.05mm
    • Dovetail angle: 5°
    • Dovetail depth: 4.50mm
    • Jaw height: 12mm
    • Jaw width: 16mm

Usage Features:

  • Mounting the Chuck: The chuck threads onto the lathe's headstock spindle by turning it clockwise. The headstock handwheel (or other spindle stationary tool) should be held to prevent the spindle from rotating during mounting. The chuck key is then used to fully secure the chuck by turning it clockwise.
  • Opening/Closing the Jaws: The chuck jaws are opened by turning the chuck key counter-clockwise and closed by turning it clockwise. Workpieces should be placed flush against the jaw face before tightening.
  • External Grip: Used for gripping the exterior of a workpiece, typically a tenon. The external grip range is 1-1/8" to 1-3/4".
  • Internal Grip: Used for gripping the interior of a workpiece, typically a recess. The internal grip range is 1-1/2" to 2-1/8".
  • Dovetail Jaws: The dovetailed design ensures a strong, non-slip grip on workpieces with prepared recesses or tenons. It is crucial that the recess or tenon has a flat base to ensure flush contact with the chuck jaws.
  • Screw Chuck Usage: For larger workpieces, the M8-3.0x20 screw chuck can be mounted internally within the chuck jaws. A pilot hole (approx. 31mm deep with a 3/8" drill bit) is drilled into the center of the workpiece, which is then screwed onto the screw chuck. The base of the workpiece should be flush against the top of the jaws for a secure hold.
  • Live Center Compatibility: When turning long workpieces, a live center in the tailstock can be used to provide additional support, enhancing stability and reducing vibration.
  • Grease Removal: Before initial use, the protective layer of grease coating the chuck's surfaces should be removed with a dry cloth to ensure optimal performance and prevent debris accumulation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential for extending the chuck's service life. After each use, the chuck should be wiped down with a soft cloth to remove chips, dust, and other debris. Compressed air (limited to 25 PSI) can be used to spray debris outwards from the center of the chuck. A small brush (e.g., a toothbrush) can help remove chips from hard-to-reach areas like the jaws, jaw carriages, and body.
  • Lubrication: Dry lubricants (PTFE works well) should be applied to the moving parts of the chuck to ensure smooth operation. Wet lubricants or grease should be avoided as they can attract dust and chips, potentially leading to decreased performance or damage.
  • Scroll Screw Cleaning: Occasionally, the jaws should be opened, and a wire bottle brush can be used to clean the scroll screw. The brush should be run along the screw while turning the chuck key in the keyhole.
  • Deep Cleaning: For intensive use, a complete tear-down and thorough cleaning of the chuck may be necessary. Detailed guides for deep cleaning are available on the wenproducts.com website.
  • Replacement Parts: Only identical WEN replacement parts should be used for servicing to avoid hazards or product failure. Replacement jaws and up-to-date instruction manuals are available on wenproducts.com.
  • Warranty: The LA4275 chuck comes with a 2-year warranty.
  • Disposal: At the end of its lifespan, the product's components should be recycled responsibly according to local regulations to minimize environmental impact. Packaging should also be recycled where facilities exist.
