Overview

The Westin Escape Cam is a compact, waterproof camera designed for underwater video recording, particularly useful for fishing enthusiasts to capture footage of lures and fish behavior. Its robust design and various accessories allow for versatile mounting and operation in different fishing conditions.

Function Description

The primary function of the Westin Escape Cam is to record high-definition video underwater. It is equipped with an internal battery for power and a micro SD card slot for storage. The camera is activated and deactivated by twisting its end cap, which also houses LED indicators for status updates. It comes with several accessories that enhance its functionality and adaptability:

  • 3 Tubes: These are likely used for mounting or as part of the camera's modular system.
  • Escape Cam: The main camera unit.
  • 8 g. weight insert: Used to adjust the camera's buoyancy or sink rate.
  • Y-Fin: A stability fin that helps keep the camera stable, especially when using larger lures or during aggressive movements. It is mounted on the front end of the camera and can be used independently or with the Dive Lip.
  • Accessory Box: Contains spare O-rings, tube beads, quick-change swivels, and anti-tangle tubes, all essential for mounting and maintenance.
  • On The Go USB-C and Lightning Micro SD Card Readers: These allow for quick transfer and viewing of recorded videos on various devices, including iPhones, iPads, Android phones/tablets, and Windows/Mac computers, without needing to connect the camera directly.
  • Dive Lip: An accessory that helps the camera dive and stay underwater during retrieve, similar to a lure's lip. It can be mounted on the rear end of the camera and used alone or with the Y-Fin to control depth.
  • Cap Tool: A specialized tool used to help remove the end cap if it becomes difficult to turn.

Usage Features

The Westin Escape Cam is designed for ease of use, from initial setup to recording and viewing footage.

Before First Time Use:

  1. Charging: The camera's battery must be fully charged. This is done by removing the end cap, inserting a USB-C cable into the port, and connecting it to a charger. A solid blue light indicates charging, and the light turning off signifies a full charge.
  2. SD Card Insertion: A micro SD card (C10, U1, V10, or better, formatted as Ex-fat) must be inserted into the micro SD card slot with the print side facing down. The camera supports cards up to 256GB.

Recording Video:

  1. Starting Recording: To begin recording, the end cap is twisted clockwise until its lines align with the lines on the camera body. The camera will flash red for 5 seconds, then blink green, yellow, or red, indicating recording and battery status.
  2. Stopping Recording: To stop recording, the end cap is twisted counterclockwise so its lines no longer align. This keeps the camera waterproof while turning it off.
  3. LED Indicators: The camera features two LED lights visible through the end cap. One indicates charging status (solid blue for charging, off when full), and the other indicates camera status (flashing red for booting, blinking green/yellow/red for recording based on battery, flashing red when saving video, solid blue when connected to a computer). Green indicates 100-80% charge, yellow 80-20%, and red 20-1%.
  4. No SD Card: If the camera is turned on without an SD card, it will flash red, then a series of blue and red flashes, and finally turn off.

Basic Mounting:

  1. Tube Bead Attachment: The tube end with a rim is pushed into a tube bead until it clicks, a one-time setup.
  2. Mainline Threading: The mainline is threaded through the camera's tube guides, then through the tube and tube bead, and tied to the swivel's eye.
  3. Leader Attachment: The tube is slid through the guides so the rubber bead is flush with the guide, with its flat side against the camera bottom. The leader is attached to the quick-change hook on the swivel (loop or tied). The swivel is then pulled into the rubber bead, leaving the hook protruding and free to turn.
  4. Anti-Tangle Tube: For casting with light lures, an anti-tangle tube from the accessory box is slid over the swivel's hook part, leaving a small gap for the swivel to turn, preventing tangles.

Advanced Camera Mounting (with Swivel behind Camera):

This setup involves a swivel placed behind the camera, simplifying knot tying and making the camera ready for use quickly. It also allows for a longer length of stronger leader material (braid, fluorocarbon, wire) to combat fish biting the line, which can be optimized for specific fishing situations.

Using the Dive Lip:

  1. Mounting: To attach the Dive Lip, the tube is slid forward to create a gap. The Dive Lip is then placed over the rear tube guide, ensuring the mainline passes through its slits.
  2. Locking: The tube is slid all the way back to lock the Dive Lip in place. The Dive Lip helps the camera dive deeper during retrieve and can be used alone or with the Y-Fin.

Using the Y-Fin:

  1. Mounting: The lock on top of the Y-Fin is opened, and the leader is passed through the gap (do not close the lock yet). The fin is then slid onto the camera until it stops.
  2. Locking: The two small protrusions on the fin's sides are aligned with matching recesses in the camera, and the lock is closed with a thumb until an audible click is heard. The Y-Fin stabilizes the camera, especially with larger or aggressively moving lures, and is useful for higher-speed fishing. It can be used alone or with the Dive Lip.

Viewing and Sharing Videos:

The included USB-C and Lightning micro SD card readers allow for direct connection to various devices:

  • iPhones/iPads: Use the Lightning reader. Videos are accessed via the "Files" or "archives" app, typically in the "Untitled" or SD card drive, then the DCMI folder. Videos can be played, shared, or saved. Files can be deleted by pressing and holding the file name.
  • Android Devices: Use the USB-C reader. The device should recognize it as external storage. Videos are accessed via the file manager app (e.g., "External Storage," "USB Drive"). Files can be browsed, opened, copied, moved, or deleted.
  • Windows/Mac Computers: Use the USB-C reader. The computer will recognize the SD card, and its contents can be accessed via File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) under "This PC" or "Devices." Files can be copied, moved, or deleted as usual.
  • Direct Camera Connection: The camera can also be connected directly to a PC via the supplied USB-C cable to access SD card contents.

Changing Camera Settings:

Camera settings are stored in a "camera settings" text file on the SD card. This file is generated when the camera is turned on with an SD card inserted. Users can open this file on a PC to adjust settings such as frame rate, electronic image stabilization, and white balance.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Westin Escape Cam.

  • Cleaning the Camera: Use a damp microfiber cloth. For stubborn dirt or salt, the camera can be placed in lukewarm water. Avoid cleaning agents or chemicals.
  • Cleaning the Lens: Use a soft microfiber cloth, similar to those used for cleaning sunglasses. Again, avoid cleaning agents or chemicals.
  • O-ring Maintenance: Regularly inspect the O-ring on the camera housing for signs of wear, cracks, or damage, as it is crucial for waterproofing. Replace it if necessary. If the end cap becomes difficult to turn, apply a small amount of silicone grease directly to the O-ring to ensure smooth operation. Do not use oil or other lubricants.
  • Y-Fin Removal: When removing the Y-Fin, it is important to open the lock first to prevent damage to the fin.

The Westin Escape Cam is a versatile tool for capturing underwater footage, designed with user-friendly features and clear maintenance guidelines to ensure a reliable experience.
