Do you have a question about the Westlock SILVER BULLET 316 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Westlock Silver Bullet Model 316 is a hermetically sealed, dry contact, single pole double throw (SPDT) reed switch element designed for reliable position sensing in various industrial applications, including hazardous environments. It operates on the principle of magnetic attraction, reacting to ferromagnetic actuators that come within its sensing range.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Silver Bullet Model 316 is to detect the presence of a ferromagnetic trigger and, upon actuation, change the state of its electrical contacts from Normally Closed (N/C) to Normally Open (N/O). This allows for precise control and monitoring of equipment based on the position of a moving part. The switch is designed to be robust and durable, suitable for demanding conditions.

Usage Features:

  • Construction: The Silver Bullet 316 features an integral, 4-conductor cable, conduit entry, and an externally threaded casing for easy mounting and position adjustment. It is encapsulated in a 316 stainless steel casing with epoxy resin and shock-absorbent polymer, ensuring durability and protection in harsh environments.
  • Triggering Mechanism: The device is supplied with threaded, encapsulated magnetic triggering bolts that facilitate precise adjustment of the gap between the Silver Bullet and the triggering mechanism. For optimal performance, the ferromagnetic trigger furnished with each sensor should be used.
  • Mounting Flexibility: Switches can be mounted in any position, individually or side-by-side. When mounting side-by-side, sensing areas must face the same direction. If sensing areas face each other, a minimum separation of 3 inches is required.
  • Hazardous Area Compliance: All Magnum Silver Bullets are hermetically sealed, making them suitable for installation in hazardous locations. Local electrical codes must be checked for specific installation requirements. Seal fitting is not required.
  • Wiring: All wiring must be performed in accordance with site and local codes, as well as the National Electric Code ANSI-NFPA-70 (US) or the Canadian Electric Code Part I (Canada) for appropriate area classifications. When using long runs of conduit or cable, supports should be placed close to the switch to prevent it from being pulled out of position.
  • Calibration: Calibration involves aligning the magnetic trigger axially with the sensing end of the Silver Bullet and adjusting the gap to approximately 0.100 inch (2.54mm). Continuity testing with a suitable tester connected to the black (normally open) and white (common) wires verifies proper operation in the presence of the trigger. For normally closed operation, the red (normally closed) and white (common) wires should be tested.
  • Special Conditions for Safe Use (IECEx/ATEX):
    1. The encapsulating compound must be protected from UV radiation.
    2. The cable entry thread is either M20 X 1.5 or 1/2-14NPT.
    3. Only suitably approved cable glands may be used.
    4. If conduit is used, a suitably approved stopping box must be installed within 1/2 inch (12.7mm) of the conduit opening.
    5. The metal casing of the product must be suitably grounded or equipotentially bonded unless using grounded metal conduit.
    6. WARNING: Do not open the product in a hazardous area.
  • Environmental Protection: The unit must be protected from exposure to aggressive substances or atmospheres to ensure that its hazard rating is not compromised.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Maintenance Required: The Westlock Silver Bullet Model 316 is designed to be maintenance-free. No specific maintenance procedures are required for the 316 series products.
  • Repair: The manual does not specify repair procedures, implying that the unit is a sealed component and typically replaced if damaged or malfunctioning.
