1) Open daylight plate, and place
2-3 drops of distilled water on
the main prism. Close the
daylight plate so the water
spreads across the entire
surface of the prism without air
bubbles or dry spots. Allow the
sample to rest on the prism for
approximately 30 seconds
before going to step #2. (This
allows the sample to adjust to
the ambient temperature of
the refractometer)
2) Hold daylight plate in the
direction of a light source and
look into the eyepiece. You
will see a circular field with
graduations down the center
(you may have to focus the
eyepiece to see the
graduations clearly). The
upper portion of the field
should be blue, while the
lower portion should be white.

3) While looking into the eyepiece,
turn the Calibration Screw until
the boundary between the
upper blue field and the lower
white field meet exactly on the
0.0°. Once complete, the
instrument is calibrated for
your current ambient room
temperature. When working
temperature of the room or
environment (not the sample)
changes by more than 5°F,
we recommend recalibrating
to maintain accuracy and
reproducibility.

Calibration Procedure

Prepare Prism with Sample

Apply sample to prism, close plate, and let adjust to ambient temperature for 30 seconds.

Observe Field and Focus

Hold to light, look into eyepiece, focus to see graduations; upper field blue, lower white.

Calibrate to Zero Point

Turn Calibration Screw until boundary meets 0.0° mark for ambient temperature calibration.

Basic Operation

Apply Sample for Operation

Apply 2-3 drops of liquid sample to prism, close plate, and let adjust to ambient temperature.

Observe Field for Operation

Hold to light, look into eyepiece, focus to see graduations; upper field blue, lower white.

Read Brix Concentration

Read the boundary line where blue and white fields meet the graduated scale for Brix value.

Industrial Fluids Usage

Prepare Gold Standard Solution

Dilute lubricant using accurate measuring cup to create a 'Gold Standard' solution for target reading.

Determine Target Reading

Measure the 'Gold Standard' solution with the refractometer to determine the target reading.

Record Target Reading

Record the measured reading of the 'Gold Standard' for future reference.

Ensure Dilution Accuracy

Use refractometer to ensure new dilutions match the 'Gold Standard' reading for accuracy.

Warnings and Maintenance

Calibration and Temperature

Accurate measurement requires calibration and sample adjustment to ambient room temperature.

Environmental and Water Exposure

Avoid damp conditions and do not immerse instrument in water to prevent fogging.

Cleaning and Prism Care

Clean prism with a soft, damp cloth regularly to prevent inaccurate results and damage.

Chemical Measurement Restrictions

Do not measure abrasive or corrosive chemicals as they can damage the prism's coating.

Handling and Storage

Handle and store this optical instrument carefully to prevent damage to components and structure.
