The WHEELER REX 8190 is a pipe threading machine designed for cutting, reaming, and threading steel and stainless steel pipes. It is a robust and efficient tool for professional use, emphasizing safety and ease of operation.
Function Description
The primary function of the WHEELER REX 8190 is to create threads on pipes, enabling them to be connected securely. It integrates cutting, reaming, and threading capabilities into a single unit. The machine is equipped with a motor that rotates the pipe, while a die-head forms the threads. A cutter is used to cut pipes to the desired length, and a reamer chamfers the inside of the pipe to remove burrs before threading. The machine also features an oil pan and an oil pump system to ensure continuous lubrication during operation, which is crucial for thread quality and tool longevity.

Usage Features
The machine is designed for user convenience and safety.
- Transportation: When moving the machine, the oil pan should be removed. For NV-auto die-heads, a pipe should be chucked and fixed with the cutter. For Universal die-heads, a pipe should be chucked, dies opened, and the pipe fixed with cutter rollers and wheel.
- Setup: The machine should be placed on a flat surface. It is designed with the rear chuck slightly raised to prevent oil spillage. Genuine WHEELER REX pipe stands are recommended for stability, inserted into sockets at the base corners and secured with bolts.
- Threading Oil: The tank should be filled with genuine WHEELER REX Threading oil (Thread Master Oil).
- Die-head Attachment: The appropriate die-head for the pipe size is attached by aligning its post with the carriage fitting hole and pushing it until it contacts the carriage.
- Operating the Die-head: For NV-auto die-heads, dies are opened by pulling the auto-open lever B. For Universal die-heads, the eccentric handle is brought forward to open the dies. Dies are matched sets and should be replaced together.
- Pipe Setup: Pipes are inserted from the hammer chuck side, or from the rear chuck scroll side for longer pipes. The rear chuck scroll and hammer chuck are tightened to clamp and center the pipe. For short pipes, the pipe should protrude at least 90mm from the chuck jaw insert. For long pipes, a pipe support (like WH #850, 851 folding tripod pipe supports) is essential to prevent vibration and ensure stability.
- Power Supply: The machine operates on 110-120V or 220-230V. The power plug should be securely connected, and extension cords, if used, must be suitable for outdoor use and inspected regularly.
- Cutting Pipes: The cutter handle should be turned no faster than 1/2 rotation per pipe rotation to avoid distorting the pipe.
- Reaming: After cutting, the reamer is used to chamfer the inside of the pipe. The reamer arm is lowered onto the carriage, pushed towards the pipe, and locked by turning the reamer shaft anti-clockwise. The pipe rotates while the reamer moves forward to engage and remove burrs.
- Threading: The die-head is adjusted to the desired thread size. For NV-auto die-heads, the open lever A is pushed down, and the cam plate fixing pin is matched with the size plate mark. For Universal die-heads, the eccentric handle is brought forward, and the lever nut is used to adjust the thread size. Threading oil should flow continuously during the process.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the machine's safe and efficient operation.
- Grease and Oil: Grease should be applied to the main shaft and bearings once a month. Lubrication oil should be applied to the cutter handle, cutter rollers, and cutter wheel once a day.
- Replacing Carbon Brushes: The carbon brushes on both sides of the motor should be replaced when worn. Genuine WHEELER REX carbon brushes are specified to prevent damage or accidents. This involves removing the side cover and the carbon brush cap.
- Cleaning the Oil Tank: The oil tank should be cleaned at least once a month to remove scrap accumulation. This involves removing the scrap tray, lifting the tank upper cover, removing the strainer, draining the threading oil, and cleaning the tank before reassembling. The tank should contain 2 liters of genuine WHEELER REX Cutting oil.
- Replacing/Installing Chuck Jaw Set: The chuck jaw insert set consists of four parts: the chuck jaw insert, spring retainer, spring, and set screw. To change the chuck jaw insert, the hand wheel is turned to align the indent over the chuck jaw, and the set screw is removed. The 6 bolts fixing the chuck should be checked and tightened regularly.
- Troubleshooting: A detailed troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues such as the motor not running, defective main shaft rotation, no oil flow, difficulty attaching the die-head, and incorrect threading. For complex issues or repairs not listed, users are advised to contact an appointed WHEELER REX distributor or dealer.
- Replacement Parts: Replacement parts for this model are maintained for 7 years after production termination, with electrical parts available for 5 years.
