Overview

This document describes the Whirlpool Smart Electronic Dryer, a gas and electric dryer designed to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, offering enhanced control and monitoring capabilities through the Whirlpool™ app.

Function Description

The Whirlpool Smart Electronic Dryer is designed to efficiently dry laundry using either natural gas or electricity, depending on the model. It features Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing users to interact with the dryer remotely via a smartphone or mobile device. This smart functionality provides several benefits, including remote monitoring of cycle progress, managing start times, and receiving notifications. The dryer is equipped with automatic cycles that sense drying air temperature and moisture levels, turning off once the selected dryness level is reached, which helps optimize energy savings and fabric care. Manual Timed Dry cycles are also available for specific drying needs.

Usage Features

The dryer's control panel is designed for intuitive operation with a sensitive surface that responds to light finger touches.

  1. Power Button: Used to turn the dryer on and off, and to stop/cancel a cycle at any time.
  2. What to Dry/How to Dry: Users first select a "What to Dry" category (e.g., Mixed, Casuals, Towels, Delicates, Bulky/Sheets) and then a "How to Dry" option (e.g., Normal, Sanitize, Gentle, Steam Refresh, Timed Dry) to achieve the best cycle combination for their items.
  3. Start/Pause Button: Initiates a cycle or pauses one in progress. The LED indicator provides status.
  4. LED Display: Shows default settings, estimated time remaining for automatic cycles, or actual time for Timed Dry cycles.
  5. Connect Button: Used for initial Wi-Fi connection to the home network. Also allows overriding a Smart Delay to start a dry cycle immediately.
  6. Download & Go™ Option: Enables downloading specialty or customized cycles from the Whirlpool™ app to the dryer.
  7. Remote Start: Allows starting a dryer cycle remotely via the Whirlpool™ app. This feature requires the Download & Go button to be held for 3 seconds, followed by holding Start/Pause.
  8. Connectivity Status Indicators: Includes indicators for Remote Start, Wi-Fi, and Smart Delay.
  9. Smart Grid Status Indicators: Blue indicates OFF-PEAK energy demand, allowing immediate cycle start. Amber indicates PEAK energy demand, initiating Smart Delay mode.

Modifiers:

  • Temperature: Adjustable for Timed Dry cycles, with up to 3 temperature settings for automatic cycles.
  • Dryness: Adjustable for most automatic cycles to fine-tune dryness levels.
  • +/- Timed Dry Adjust: Increases or decreases the length of Timed Dry cycles.

Options:

  • Static Reduce: Adds approximately 8 minutes of periodic tumbling with moisture to reduce static in selected automatic cycles.
  • End Beep: Adjusts the signal indicating the end of a drying cycle to low, medium, high, or off. Can also turn off tones for feature selections.
  • Damp Beep: Sounds a series of beeps when the load is damp but not completely dry, useful for removing items that don't need full drying. Default for Bulky/Sheets cycle.
  • Wrinkle Shield™ Option: Adds up to 150 minutes of periodic tumbling after a cycle to help reduce wrinkling if the load cannot be removed immediately.
  • EcoBoost™ Option: Increases energy savings by using a slightly lower heat level, which extends drying times by approximately 40 minutes. Defaults to "on" for Normal cycles and is available on several other gentle and delicate cycles.
  • Steam Refresh: Best for reducing wrinkles and odors from dry items, with cycle time varying by item count.

Connectivity Setup:

The dryer connects to Wi-Fi via Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) on a home wireless router. The process involves pressing the WPS button on the router, then touching the POWER and CONNECT buttons on the dryer. The Wi-Fi status indicator will blink during connection and remain lit upon success. If connection fails, troubleshooting steps are provided, including checking router status, signal strength, and dryer power. After connecting, users download the Whirlpool™ app, create an account, and register their dryer using the Smart Appliance ID (SAID) found inside the dryer door.

Drying Rack:

A drying rack can be used for items that should not tumble, such as sweaters and tennis shoes. It is inserted into the dryer, with hooks aligning with holes in the door opening and the rear support resting on the back ledge. The drying rack is compatible only with Manual Dry/Timed Dry cycles.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the Dryer Location:

The area around the dryer should be kept clear of items that could block airflow, including piles of laundry, to ensure proper operation.

Cleaning the Lint Screen:

The lint screen, located in the door opening, should be cleaned before each load. An indicator light, "Check Lint," reminds users to do this. To clean, pull the screen up, push the tab down to open, and roll lint off with fingers. Do not rinse or wash the screen, as wet lint is difficult to remove. After cleaning, close the screen and push it firmly back into place. If lint falls into the dryer during removal, the exhaust hood should be checked and cleaned. The space where the lint screen is located should also be vacuumed periodically to remove accumulated lint.

As Needed Cleaning (Lint Screen):

Laundry detergent and fabric softener residue can build up on the lint screen, causing longer drying times or premature cycle stops. If lint falls off the screen when dry, it indicates clogging. The lint screen should be washed with a nylon brush, hot water, and liquid detergent every 6 months or more frequently if clogged. After scrubbing, rinse the screen with hot water, dry it thoroughly with a clean towel, and reinstall it.

Cleaning the Dryer Interior:

The dryer drum can be cleaned with a mild hand dish detergent mixed with warm water and a soft cloth, followed by rinsing with a wet sponge or towel. Alternatively, a microfiber cloth and hot water in a spray bottle can be used. Discoloration from unstable dyes (e.g., denim blue jeans) is normal and not harmful to the dryer or future loads. Drying unstable dye items inside out can prevent dye transfer.

Removing Accumulated Lint:

  • From Inside the Dryer Cabinet: Lint should be removed every 2 years or more often by a qualified appliance servicer or ventilation system cleaner.
  • From the Exhaust Vent: Lint should be removed every 2 years or more often, depending on dryer usage.

Non-Use, Storage, and Moving Care:

  • Steam Models: Should be installed and stored where they will not freeze to prevent damage from water remaining in hoses.
  • Extended Non-Use/Storage: Unplug the dryer or disconnect power, clean the lint screen, and turn off the water supply (for steam models) to prevent flooding.
  • Moving Care: For cord-connected dryers, unplug the power cord. For gas models, close the shut-off valve, disconnect the gas supply line, and cap the open fuel line. For steam models, shut off the water faucet, disconnect and drain the water inlet hose. Ensure leveling legs are secure and tape the dryer door shut.
  • Reinstalling: Follow installation instructions for locating, leveling, and connecting the dryer.

Special Instructions for Steam Models:

  • Water Inlet Hose: Replace the inlet hose and hose screen every 5 years to reduce the risk of failure. Inspect periodically for bulges, kinks, cuts, wear, or leaks.
  • Winterizing: Unplug the dryer, shut off the water faucet, and disconnect/drain the water inlet hose.
  • Using Again: Flush water pipes, reconnect the water inlet hose, turn on the water faucet, and plug in/reconnect power.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues related to dryer operation, connectivity, and results. It suggests possible causes and solutions, directing users to check the website for additional help. For connectivity issues, it covers scenarios like the dryer not connecting to Wi-Fi, Smart Grid functions not working, or weak signal strength. For dryer operation, it addresses problems like the dryer not running, not turning off, not heating, unusual noises, and long drying times. It also explains diagnostic codes and restricted airflow (AF) warnings.
