Overview

This document provides comprehensive information about the Whirlpool Heat Pump Dryer, a ventless appliance designed for energy efficiency and gentle fabric care.

Function Description:

The Whirlpool Heat Pump Dryer is a clothes dryer that utilizes a refrigeration system to dry and recycle air, consuming a fraction of the energy of traditional dryers. Unlike conventional vented dryers, it does not require an external vent, offering greater flexibility in installation locations. The dryer operates at lower temperatures, which may make clothes feel cooler after drying compared to traditional dryers. Its primary function is to efficiently dry clothes while minimizing energy consumption and maximizing fabric care.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirements:
    • U.S.A. Only: Requires a separate 30-amp circuit, single-phase, 120-/240-volt, 60 Hz, AC-only electrical supply (or 120/208-volt if specified on the serial/rating plate). It must be fused on both sides of the line, and a time-delay fuse or circuit breaker is recommended. Connection to an individual branch circuit is required, with no fuse in the neutral or grounding circuit.
    • Canada Only: Requires a separate 30-amp circuit, single-phase, 120/240-volt, 60 Hz, AC-only electrical supply, fused on both sides of the line. A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker is recommended. Connection to an individual branch circuit is required.
  • Power Supply Cord (if used): A UL-listed 30-amp power supply cord, rated 120-/240-volt minimum, type SRD or SRDT, at least 4 ft. (1.22 m) long, with ring or spade terminals with upturned ends. For 4-wire receptacles (NEMA-Type 14-30R), it must have four 10-gauge copper wires. For 3-wire receptacles (NEMA-Type 10-30R), it must have three 10-gauge copper wires.
  • Direct Wire Connection (if used): Flexible armored cable or nonmetallic sheathed copper cable (with ground wire), covered with flexible metallic conduit. All current-carrying wires must be insulated. 10-gauge solid copper wire (do not use aluminum) at least 5 ft. (1.52 m) long.
  • Dimensions:
    • Front View: 24" (610 mm) width, 33½" Min. (851 mm) to 34½" Max. (876 mm) height.
    • Side View: 43⁵/₁₆" (1100 mm) depth, 26" (654 mm) width.
  • Weight: Floor must support dryer weight of 200 lbs. (90.7 kg), plus the weight of any companion appliance.
  • Leveling: Level floor with maximum slope of 1" (25 mm) under the entire dryer. If the forward slope is greater than 1" (25 mm), water could run out from the front filter.
  • Operating Temperature: Do not operate, install, or store the dryer where it will be exposed to water, weather, or temperatures below 40°F (4°C). Lower temperatures may cause the dryer not to shut off at the end of automatic sensor cycles, resulting in longer drying times.
  • Drain System: Water from wet clothes is pumped out to a drain or water tank. The drain hose should not be inserted more than 4.5" (114 mm) into a standpipe to avoid siphoning. Minimum standpipe diameter is 2" (51 mm), with a height between 30" (762 mm) and 36" (910 mm) from the bottom of the dryer.

Usage Features:

  • Heat Pump Technology: Recycles and reclaims heat, reducing overall energy consumption. It offers flexibility in managing drying performance and energy savings, and provides gentle fabric care with less heat than vented dryers. The ventless design allows for installation in more locations.
  • Control Panel: Features a Power button, Program (cycle) selection, Control Knob for adjustments, and Options.
  • Programs/Cycles: Includes Automatic Cycles (Mixed, Heavy Duty, Normal, Synthetics, Delicates, Wool, Bulky/Bedding) and Adjustable Time Cycles (Air Dry, Timed Dry, Refresh).
  • Automatic Cycles: Sense moisture and temperature, shutting off when the selected dryness level is reached. The NORMAL dryness level is recommended for optimal energy savings.
  • Timed Dry: Runs for a set amount of time (10 to 180 minutes), suitable for occasional damp loads.
  • Refresh Cycle: Designed for dry loads to loosen wrinkles, reduce odors, and refresh fabrics, with an option to spray up to 6.8 oz (200 ml) of water into the drum.
  • Dryness Levels: Adjustable for Automatic Cycles (X-Dry, Dry, Damp Dry).
  • Options:
    • Cycle Signal: Turns the end-of-cycle signal on or off.
    • Control Lock: Locks controls to prevent accidental changes.
    • Steam: Adds humidity to the end of certain cycles (Heavy Duty, Normal, Synthetics) to reduce wrinkles.
    • Delay Start: Delays the start of a cycle by up to 23 hours.
    • Save Time: Provides quicker drying.
    • Gentle: Dries laundry more gently by reducing temperature.
    • Wrinkle Shield™: Tumbles laundry periodically for up to 12 hours after the cycle ends to prevent creasing.
  • Adapting to Water Conductivity: Allows adjustment of the dryer's sensitivity to water conductivity (levels 1-5) to optimize drying results if the default dryness levels are not satisfactory.
  • New Sounds: Users may notice a hum from the compressor (like a refrigerator) and gurgling sounds as water is pumped out.
  • Door Reversal (Optional): The dryer door can be reversed to open from the opposite side, requiring specific tools and following detailed instructions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lint Screen: Must be cleaned before or after each load. Located in the door opening. Can be washed with a nylon brush, hot water, and liquid detergent to remove residue buildup every 6 months or more frequently.
  • Bottom Filter: Must be cleaned after every 5 cycles. Located in the bottom corner of the dryer. The foam filter and filter can be cleaned by hand or rinsed with water (not in a washer). The filter foam should not be inserted wet.
  • Water Tank: Must be emptied regularly. The "Water tank full" indicator will light up when full.
  • Dryer Interior: The drum can be cleaned with a mild hand dish detergent and warm water, or a microfiber cloth and hot water in a spray bottle.
  • Accumulated Lint: Lint from inside the dryer cabinet should be removed every 2 years or more often by a qualified appliance servicer.
  • Non-Use, Storage, and Moving Care:
    • Empty the water tank.
    • Unplug the dryer or disconnect power.
    • Clean the lint screen.
    • In colder climates, store the dryer where it will not freeze to prevent damage from residual water in the hose.
    • For moving, ensure leveling legs are secure and use tape to secure the dryer door.
  • Installation Diagnostic Routine: The dryer automatically runs an installation diagnostic routine at the start of its first cycle. An initial odor may be present but will dissipate.
