Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the WHITE SM2000 sewing machine.

Function Description:

The WHITE SM2000 is a household sewing machine designed for various sewing tasks, including basic stitching, decorative stitches, and mending. It is capable of performing straight stitches, zigzag stitches, buttonholes, and other specialized stitches. The machine is equipped with a foot controller for speed control and a light bulb for illumination of the sewing area.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: SM2000
  • Needle Type: Always use needle type 15x1/705.
  • Light Bulb: Uses a 110V 15W bulb.
  • Polarized Plug: The appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) to reduce the risk of electric shock. This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way.
  • Bobbin Type: Uses Class 15 bobbins.
  • Stitch Length Dial: Adjustable for desired stitch length. For longer stitches, turn to the right; for shorter stitches, turn to the left. Normal setting is between 2 and 3.
  • Pattern Selection Dial: Allows selection of various stitch patterns, including overcast, casing, straight, zigzag (2.2mm, 3.5mm, 5mm), blind stitch, stretch blind hem, mending, buttonhole, stretch stitch, feather stitch, honeycomb stitch, and overlock stitches.
  • Thread Tension: Adjustable for both upper and lower threads to ensure balanced stitching.

Usage Features:

  • Detachable Extension Table/Free Arm: The machine comes with a detachable extension table that converts to a free arm, making it easier to sew trousers, sleeves, cuffs of t-shirts, and blouses.
  • Threading: Detailed instructions are provided for threading the upper thread through guides, tension discs, and the needle, as well as for bobbin winding and inserting the bobbin.
  • Foot Controller: The machine's speed is controlled by the foot controller; pressing it more increases the sewing speed.
  • Reverse Sewing: Features a reverse sewing button for reinforcing seams by sewing backward.
  • Thick Fabric Sewing: When sewing thick fabrics like denim, it is crucial to use the proper needle size and type (e.g., #14 for denim) and ensure the needle penetrates the fabric appropriately. Incorrect maneuvering can cause needle deflection or breakage.
  • Extra Presser Foot Lift: The presser foot can be lifted higher to accommodate thicker fabrics.
  • Pattern Selection: Stitches are selected by turning the pattern selection dial. It is important to ensure the needle is in its highest position when changing stitch patterns.
  • Stitch Length Adjustment: The stitch length can be adjusted using the stitch length dial.
  • Turning a Square Corner: Instructions are provided for turning corners by stopping the machine with the needle in the fabric, lifting the presser foot, and turning the fabric.
  • Zigzag Stitching: The machine offers various zigzag stitch patterns (2.2mm, 3.5mm, 5mm) for different applications, including finishing raw edges.
  • Blind Hem Stitch: Used for creating invisible hems.
  • Overcasting: For finishing raw edges of fabric to prevent fraying.
  • Stretch Stitching: Specific stitches are available for stretch and knit fabrics.
  • Buttonholes: The machine can create buttonholes, with instructions for determining length and recommended use of interfacing for soft or elastic fabrics.
  • Quilting: A quilting guide (optional accessory) can be used for quilting.
  • Zipper Sewing: A special zipper foot (optional accessory) can be used for sewing zippers.
  • Mending/Patching: Instructions for mending rips and patching fabrics.
  • Appliqué Work: Steps for creating appliqué designs using zigzag stitches.
  • Smocking: Instructions for gathering fabric using straight stitches with loose upper tension.
  • Drop Feed Lever/Free Hand Embroidery: The drop feed lever allows for free-hand embroidery by disengaging the feed dog.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning and Lubrication: The machine requires regular cleaning and lubrication for satisfactory performance. It is recommended to clean and oil the machine once a month if used for a few hours a day.
  • Safety Precaution: Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance on the machine.
  • Cleaning Steps:
    • Remove the presser foot and needle.
    • Remove the needle plate.
    • Brush off dust and lint from the feed dog with a cleaning brush.
    • Turn latches outward to access the shuttle area.
    • Remove the shuttle race cover and shuttle.
    • Clean the shuttle race and shuttle with a cleaning brush and soft cloth.
  • Oiling: Use oil specifically manufactured for sewing machines. Apply one drop of oil on the shuttle where friction occurs.
  • Cleaning Shuttle Case: If thread gets caught between the shuttle and shuttle case, causing the machine to run erratically or stop, the shuttle case needs to be cleaned. This involves lifting the presser foot, removing the bobbin case, pushing latches outward, and cleaning the shuttle and shuttle case.
  • Changing Light Bulb: Unplug the machine, loosen the screw to remove the face cover, unscrew the old bulb counterclockwise, and install a new 110V 15W bulb by screwing it clockwise.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting chart to help identify and resolve common issues such as breaking lower thread, skipping stitches, irregular stitches, fabric not feeding correctly, noisy machine, fabric puckers, and breaking needle. Each problem lists probable causes and corresponding corrections, often referring to specific page numbers for detailed instructions.
