Overview

The Windy Nation VertaMax Power Inverter is a highly reliable device designed to convert DC power from a 12V source (such as a vehicle, boat, or dedicated battery) into 115V AC power. This allows for the operation of a wide variety of household AC items, including computers, mobile phone chargers, radios, and TVs. It is suitable for various applications, including Solar (PV) battery systems, Wind Turbine battery systems, Recreational Vehicles, and Boats. The VertaMax series offers both Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave versions to cater to different power needs and sensitivities of electronic devices.

Function Description:

The core function of the VertaMax Power Inverter is to transform direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). The Modified Sine Wave version is an affordable, all-purpose inverter suitable for less sensitive appliances like phone chargers, heaters, and air conditioners, particularly resistive loads without a startup surge. The Pure Sine Wave version, on the other hand, employs more sophisticated technology to protect sensitive electronics such as televisions, laptops, digital microwaves, refrigerators, and inductive type loads, producing power equal to or better than that from the electrical grid.

The inverter features a "Soft Start" mechanism to manage power surges during appliance startup, protecting both the appliance and the inverter from excessive power draws. It also includes a digital display meter that shows either AC output power in Watts or DC input voltage in Volts, selectable via a switch. For convenience, a USB charging port is integrated, delivering 5 volts at a maximum current of 2.1 amps, suitable for charging standard USB accessories. Remote ON/OFF capability is available as an optional feature, allowing the inverter to be controlled from a distance when installed in an inaccessible location.

Usage Features:

The VertaMax is designed for ease of use with several protective features. It includes microprocessor-based PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) operation for stable power delivery. The unit has three AC receptacles for connecting multiple devices. A power ON/OFF switch with an LED indicator allows for direct control, and a remote switch port offers an optional remote control feature.

Safety is paramount, with built-in protections against:

  • Over Input Voltage: Shuts down if DC input exceeds 16V, with an alarm and blinking FAULT LED.
  • Low Input Voltage: Alarms at 10.5V DC and shuts down at 10.0V DC to prevent battery over-discharge.
  • Power Overload: Continuous alarm and blinking FAULT LED if starting power exceeds surge rating or AC appliances exceed inverter's power rating, leading to automatic shutdown.
  • Over Heating: Alarms and blinks FAULT LED if internal temperature exceeds safe limits, followed by automatic shutdown if the condition persists.
  • Short Circuit: Alarms and blinks FAULT LED, then automatically shuts down after three seconds.

The cooling fan is temperature-controlled, activating only when the inverter approaches an unsafe operating temperature. The digital display meter can be toggled to show either WATTS (AC output power) or VOLTS (DC input voltage).

Maintenance Features:

The VertaMax is robustly constructed and requires minimal maintenance. It is recommended to inspect all connections at least twice a year for insulation damage or corrosion and to ensure they remain tight. Regular cleaning of the heat sink and surrounding area with a dry cloth is advised. Users should also ensure that vents and fans are free of dust or debris and inspect batteries for any physical damage or corrosion. The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide to help users diagnose and resolve common issues, such as no power, unit turning off prematurely, low voltage alarms, and interference. For more complex issues, customer support via phone or email is available, and users can also consult the Windy Nation Community Forums for assistance.
