Overview

The Alitec Skid Steer Tiller, available in TL52, TL73, and TL84 models, is an attachment designed for soil tilling applications. It is intended for use with skid steer power units and is manufactured by Woods Equipment Company.

Function Description:

The tiller is designed to prepare soil for planting by breaking up and mixing the earth. It operates by rotating a drum equipped with tines, which penetrate and cultivate the soil. The attachment connects to a skid steer's auxiliary hydraulic system, drawing power for its hydraulic motor to drive the tines. Depth skids on either side of the chassis allow for adjustable tilling depth, ensuring consistent soil preparation. The tiller can be operated in both forward and reverse directions, with the tines rotating clockwise for finish tilling in reverse.

Usage Features:

The tiller is designed for ease of installation and operation with a skid steer. It requires the skid steer to have ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) and a seat belt/operator restraint, which must be securely fastened during operation. The skid steer must also be equipped with an auxiliary hydraulic system capable of continuous flow.

  • Installation: The process involves aligning the tiller attachment with the skid steer, pulling forward until contact, raising the skid steer arms to engage the top latch bar, and then securing the coupler pins. Hydraulic hoses must be connected correctly, and all control lever positions should function as instructed. Air in the hydraulic system must be purged by operating all hydraulic functions several times before use.
  • Depth Adjustment: The tiller has four depth positions, allowing operators to adjust the tilling depth from 0 to 6 inches. This is achieved by tilting the tiller forward until the depth skids contact the ground and moving the skid steer in the desired direction of travel.
  • Tiller Rotation: The tiller can be operated in both forward and reverse directions. For finish tilling, operating in reverse with clockwise tine rotation (when viewed from the left side) is recommended.
  • Safety: Emphasizes reading all manuals, understanding controls, and ensuring proper training for operators. It warns against operating under the influence, allowing untrained persons or children to operate, and working near moving parts. Safety decals are provided and must be maintained.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the tiller's dependable performance and longevity.

  • Pre-Operation Checklist: Before each use, operators must review safety rules and decals, check that all safety decals are installed and readable, ensure shields and guards are properly installed and in good condition, verify secure attachment to the skid steer, check all hardware and cotter pins, and inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings for damage or leaks.
  • Cleaning: After each use, large debris like dirt clumps and crop residue should be removed. Periodically or before extended storage, a more thorough cleaning with a low-pressure water spray is recommended, taking care around decals and chipped paint.
  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the machine for worn or damaged parts is advised, with replacements made as needed.
  • Hydraulic System: It is critical to ensure the hydraulic oil filter on the skid steer is clean, the hydraulic oil level is adequate, and the relief valve is set properly to prevent issues like insufficient hydraulic flow, excessive oil temperature, or insufficient cutting power.
  • Tine Replacement: Worn or broken tines can be replaced by removing a nut and bolt, replacing the tine, and re-torquing the bolt to 50 lbs-ft (68 N-m), ensuring the tine can rotate ±15°.
  • Drum and Motor Removal/Installation: Detailed instructions are provided for removing and installing the drum and hydraulic motor for service. This involves supporting the drum with a hoist, removing bolts, and carefully aligning components. Torque specifications are provided for reassembly (e.g., coupler bolts to 85 lbs-ft (115 N-m), motor housing bolts to 120 lbs-ft (163 N-m), and depth skid nuts to 240 lbs-ft (325 N-m)).
  • Storage: When storing, the tiller should be placed inside or on a pallet, off the ground, to protect couplers and hoses. Hydraulic hoses should be secured with quick disconnects or caps to prevent fluid loss and contamination. The storage area should be kept clear of children and bystanders.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide helps identify and resolve common issues such as the drum not rotating, sluggish rotation, motor operating without drum rotation, oil leaks, excessive oil temperature, and insufficient tilling power. Solutions often involve checking hydraulic connections, inspecting components, referring to the skid steer owner's manual, or contacting a dealer.
