Overview

The document describes the ATV Broadcast Seeder-Spreader, Model No. ATVK-400, an implement designed for use with All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to broadcast seeds, granular fertilizers, and ice control materials.

Function Description

The ATV Broadcast Seeder-Spreader is an auxiliary attachment for ATVs, primarily used for agricultural and land management tasks such as seeding and fertilizing, as well as for spreading granular ice control materials in winter. It operates by broadcasting material from a hopper using a fan, with the spread width and application rate controlled by the operator.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Source: 12-volt electrical system (requires a 12-volt ATV electrical system or a separate 12-volt battery).
  • Motor: 12V DC motor, drawing approximately 3 amps at full load.
  • Hopper Capacity: 1 Bushel (as indicated by the "Hopper (1 Bushel) w/Lid" part).
  • Fan Speed Control: Features a rheostat switch with two positions: full speed for most seeding applications and variable speed to reduce spread width.
  • Spread Width: Indicated to be up to 38 feet for certain materials (e.g., Fertilizer: Pellet or Granule) when the spinner is operated 30 inches above the ground.
  • Recommended Operating Speed: Spread chart settings are calibrated at 4 MPH ground speed, with adjustments needed for different speeds (e.g., 8 MPH cuts rates by half, 6 MPH changes rates by 75%).
  • Material Compatibility: Designed for most seeds (except those planted in rows) and all granular fertilizers. Can spread granular calcium chloride if dry and free-flowing. Not suitable for rock salt. Some bearded seeds (fescue, bromegrass) may bridge, requiring mixing with dry sand (50/50 mix) to improve flow.
  • Mounting: Designed to be mounted on most ATVs using a dedicated mounting kit (ATVK-400 Mounting Kit).

Usage Features

  • Ease of Control: The hopper opening is regulated by a control lever with a calibrated scale, allowing the operator to set the desired application rate. A stop bolt can be adjusted to ensure consistent opening.
  • Calibration: The manual provides instructions for calibrating ATV speed using markers (88 feet apart) to achieve desired travel times for accurate spreading (e.g., 4 MPH in 15 seconds).
  • Spreading Techniques: Recommends covering an area twice over at one-half the recommended material usage rate, either by running halfway between first spreading widths or in a criss-cross pattern, for complete and even coverage.
  • Visibility: Emphasizes operating only in daylight or good artificial light.
  • Pre-Operation Checks: Operators are instructed to check tire and rim condition, inflate tires to proper pressure, and ensure all pins, bolts, and connections are secure.
  • Material Handling: Advises sifting or breaking up lumps in granular fertilizer and not using on windy days for fine grass seed.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Operator Training: All operators must read and understand the manual and be familiar with safety rules.
    • No Riders: Never allow riders on the equipment or ATV.
    • Personal Protective Equipment: Always use safety goggles when spreading seed or fertilizer. Safety shoes and gloves are also recommended during assembly and maintenance.
    • Safe Speed: Use extreme caution and a safe operating speed, especially on rough or uneven terrain, hillsides, or curves to prevent tipping. Avoid excessive speed.
    • Clearance: Maintain a 50-foot clearance from the seeder/spreader for all persons.
    • Battery Safety: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first and connect it last when working with the battery. Avoid sparks near the battery due to explosive hydrogen gas.
    • Jam Clearing: Use a clean stick or rod to clear material jams in the feed gate; never use hands or fingers.
    • Vehicle Stability: Be aware that a heavy load can cause vehicle instability; front counter-weights may be needed.
    • Unattended Operation: Always shut off the ATV, set the brake, shut off the engine, and remove the key before dismounting or leaving unattended.
    • Substance Use: Never operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    • Clothing: Wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid entanglement.
    • Engine Operation: Start the vehicle in motion before opening the feed gate when broadcasting fertilizer to prevent heavy deposition in one area.
    • Warranty: Warranty is void if the seeder unit is not used with a Worksaver mounting kit.

Maintenance Features

  • Hopper Cleaning: The high-density polyethylene hopper is impervious to acids, alkalis, and salt, preventing rust or corrosion. It is recommended to clean the hopper after use.
  • Storage: After use, the broadcaster should be removed from the vehicle and cleaned thoroughly. Water should not be used on the Electric Drive Unit to avoid harming the motor. It should be wiped clean with a brush or rag, and a light amount of oil applied to the opening gate slide and all bearings. Store upside down in a dry location.
  • Pre-Use Checks: Before each use, check that all nuts, bolts, and set screws are tight.
  • Motor Protection: When washing the seeder, the motor must be completely covered (e.g., with a plastic bag) to protect it from water or corrosive solutions.
  • Paint Maintenance: Paint any bare metal or rusty spots for longer life.
