Overview

The WORX Cordless Hedge Trimmer, models WG284E and WG284E.X, is a battery-operated power tool designed for cutting and trimming hedges and bushes in domestic use. This device is part of the 20V PowerShare™ system, indicating its compatibility with other 20V WORX PowerShare batteries.

Function Description

The hedge trimmer is equipped with a long blade, protected by a safety guard, designed to efficiently cut through foliage. It operates using two 20V batteries, which must both be installed for the machine to run. The device features a rotating rear handle, allowing for multiple grip positions to enhance user comfort and control during various cutting angles. A front switch lever, designed for all-around switch function, and a rear switch lever work in conjunction to activate the blades. A locking switch is present for the rotating handle, ensuring it remains in the desired position during operation. The blade is covered by a sheath for safe storage and transport.

Usage Features

Before operating the hedge trimmer, users must ensure that the safety guard and front handle are properly attached. The handle is specifically designed to prevent incorrect assembly, and if it doesn't fit, it should be turned around. The battery charge condition can be checked on battery packs equipped with an indicator light. It is crucial to fully charge both batteries before the first use, as the machine requires two batteries to function. When using batteries with different power levels, the machine will operate at the capacity of the lower common denominator.

To start the hedge trimmer, the blade sheath must first be removed. The rear handle can be rotated to different positions (e.g., 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°) to facilitate various cutting tasks. Before rotating the handle, the locking switch must be unlocked. Once the desired position is set, the handle should be adjusted slightly until a click is heard, indicating it is locked. It is imperative to ensure the handle is securely locked before operation and that the locking switch is engaged before starting the hedge trimmer.

When trimming, it is recommended to inspect the area for foreign objects that could become entangled in the blades. The trimmer should always be held with both hands, with the blade facing away from the user, before turning it on. For new growth, a wide sweeping action is advised to feed stems directly into the blade. The cutting blades should be allowed to reach full speed before engaging with the hedge. Users should keep the blades away from people and objects like walls, large stones, trees, and vehicles during operation. If the blade stalls, the trimmer should be stopped immediately by releasing both switch levers before attempting to clear any jammed debris. Wearing gloves is recommended when trimming thorny or prickly growth. The device is not designed to cut stems that are too thick for the blade.

For top cutting, a wide sweeping motion with a slight downward tilt of the cutting blades in the direction of motion yields optimal results. For side cutting, it is best to start at the bottom and cut upwards, tapering the hedge inward at the top. This technique exposes more of the hedge, promoting a more uniform growth pattern. The hedge trimmer is intended for use by the operator at ground level and should not be used on ladders or other unstable supports. Any adjustable stopping mechanisms for moving elements, such as an extended shaft or pivoting element, should be in the locked position before operation and maintained at regular intervals.

Maintenance Features

Before performing any adjustments, servicing, or maintenance, the battery must be removed from the hedge trimmer. The power tool contains no user-serviceable parts. It should never be cleaned with water or chemical cleaners; instead, it should be wiped clean with a dry cloth. The tool should always be stored in a dry place. To ensure proper function, the motor ventilation slots and all working controls should be kept free of dust.

Lubrication of the cutting blade is essential. It is important to use only the recommended standard lubricating oil, such as WD-40, to prevent damage to the blade. Regular lubrication helps maintain the sharpness and efficiency of the cutting tools, reducing binding and making them easier to control. If any parts are missing, damaged, or broken, the hedge trimmer should not be operated until all damaged parts have been replaced or repaired. This includes ensuring the front handle and safety guard are always attached.

For storage, the hedge trimmer should be placed in a suitable location, away from children. The blade sheath should always be fitted when transporting or storing the hedge trimmer to prevent personal injury from the blades. Battery packs should be kept clean and dry, and their terminals wiped with a clean, dry cloth if they become dirty. Battery packs should not be left on charge when not in use. After extended periods of storage, it may be necessary to charge and discharge the battery pack several times to achieve maximum performance. Only chargers specified by WORX should be used for recharging.
