Do you have a question about the Wozniak RC Tech KLW203 mini and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The KLW203 is an Energy Meter with Limiter designed for R/C boats, specifically catering to applications requiring high current consumption and water resistance. Its primary function is twofold: it acts as an energy meter, displaying real-time energy consumption, and as a limiter, reducing throttle demand to the Electronic Speed Control (ESC) once a programmed energy limit is reached. The device is available in three versions: mini, midi, and strong, each with varying current capabilities.

Function Description:

As an energy meter, the KLW203 continuously monitors and displays the energy consumed by the connected load. This real-time feedback is valuable for training purposes, allowing users to track energy usage.

As a limiter, the device enforces user-defined energy limits. Four different energy limits can be programmed and easily switched between by a short press of the SET button. When the consumed energy reaches the set limit, the device intervenes by reducing the throttle demand sent to the ESC. This reduction is governed by programmable parameters such as ramp time (the duration over which the throttle reduction occurs), throttle minimum (the lowest throttle percentage allowed during limitation), and limit time (the duration for which the throttle remains at the minimum). The limiter function is particularly useful in competitions to ensure adherence to energy regulations.

The device incorporates a "Starting current threshold" feature, which allows users to skip energy counting during the initial preparation phase of the model. Energy counting only begins when the current exceeds this programmed threshold.

A key feature is the ability to update energy limits directly from the device's menu, eliminating the need to return it to the manufacturer or purchase a separate programmer. This is achieved by holding down the SET button for a longer duration.

Important Technical Specifications:

The KLW203 operates within a battery voltage range of 0-45 VDC and has a supply current of 16 mA. It can measure energy from 0-357 Wh with an energy resolution of 0.1 Wh and an accuracy of +/-1%. The sampling frequency is 333 Hz.

The starting current threshold varies by model: 0-5 A for midi and strong versions, and 0-2 A for the mini version. The ramp time can be set from 0-30 seconds, and the throttle minimum from 0-99%. The limit time can be programmed from 0-999 seconds. The minimum pulse width (tPWM) is 0.8 - 1.6 ms.

The device features a 64x32 OLED display for clear information readout. It is designed for nominal operating conditions of 0-50 °C ambient temperature and boasts an IP67 waterproof rating.

All versions feature minimal power loss due to the use of silicone connecting cables with a cross-section area up to 10 AWG (5.3 mm²) and a very low sensor resistor down to 0.0001 Ω.

Usage Features:

The KLW203 is designed for ease of use with a clear LED display and intuitive menu navigation. It does not require a special programmer or additional switch button for operation.

Connections:

  • Current Measurement: Handled by the BLACK cable, which connects between the battery negative (B-) and the ESC negative terminal.
  • Voltage Measurement: Handled by the RED B+ cable, which connects to the battery positive terminal. A balancer connector can be used for this purpose.
  • PWM Signal: The Yellow wire carries the PWM signal.

Important Connection Notes:

  • Always pay close attention to polarity: Black/brown for negative (-), Red for positive (+), Yellow for PWM Signal.
  • Do not leave the device connected to the battery unattended for extended periods, as this can lead to excessive discharge and battery damage.

The device's menu is accessed and navigated using a "Push button" for short presses and a "Hold button" for longer presses. The menu structure allows users to:

  • View software version.
  • See the last energy result.
  • View current energy consumption and energy limit.
  • Reset energy consumption.
  • View voltage, current, and maximum current.
  • Reset maximum current.
  • Choose and set one of four energy limits.
  • Set the start current threshold.
  • Set the ramp time.
  • Set the limit time.
  • Set the throttle minimum percentage.
  • Set the minimum pulse width (tPWM).

Limiter Operation:

The limiter's behavior is defined by several programmable parameters:

  • Starting current threshold: Energy counting only begins when the current exceeds this value, allowing for preparation time.
  • Energy limit: The maximum allowed energy consumption before reduction.
  • Ramp time (tr): The time taken for the throttle demand to decrease from 100% to the throttle minimum after the energy limit is reached.
  • Throttle minimum (ThMIN): The lowest throttle percentage the ESC will receive during the limitation period.
  • Limit time (tL): The duration for which the throttle remains at the throttle minimum after the energy limit is reached.

The device automatically determines the maximum pulse width (corresponding to maximum power) upon turn-on. The minimum pulse width can be determined automatically or set manually via the tPWM menu option. For automatic mode, set "---" and ensure the transmitter is on with throttle at minimum when the KLW203 powers on. For manual mode, enter the pulse width value in 10*us (e.g., 100 for 1 ms).

The "Maximum current" displayed is an averaged value over 256 samples (0.8 seconds), useful for selecting the appropriate speed controller.

Maintenance Features:

The device is built using a potting process where the electronic assembly is filled in a vacuum with a solid compound, ensuring high measurement accuracy even after submersion and providing high waterproof capabilities (IP67).

Energy Reset:

To reset the energy value to zero before a new start, the device should be completely disconnected from the power supply for 1-2 minutes. Alternatively, if the keyboard socket is not sealed, a long press (approx. 1 second) of the SET button can reset the energy value. When power is connected, the last energy value blinks on the display for 4 seconds, but this does not affect the new measurement.

Keyboard Socket:

The keyboard socket is waterproof (gold plated). However, after submersion, current flow from the battery can cause electrolysis and damage the socket. It is recommended to seal the socket with tape to prevent this.

Warranty:

The device comes with a 24-month manufacturer's warranty. Defects during this period will be repaired or replaced free of charge within 14 working days. The warranty does not cover mechanical damage, user-induced faults (e.g., polarity confusion, exceeding voltage limits, non-compliance with instructions, self-tampering, short circuits, or use with faulty components). The manufacturer is not liable for damages caused by improper use and reserves the right to modify the product design without prior notification.

The product is designed to be disposed of in accordance with EU Directive 2002/96 / EC, meaning it should not be discarded with household waste but taken to designated collection points for proper recycling.
