• REFLECT – ABSORB – PENETRATE
• Far infrared energy is reflected by glass, mirrors and other reflective surfaces
• Because of this it cannot penetrate glass, nor can it penetrate most plastics
(polyethylene is a notable exception, which we use as front filters for the standard
detectors)
• Semiconductors Silicon and Germanium are transparent too, we use Silicon for
the front filters for the H-detectors, Germanium is used for thermal camera lenses
