The primary function of the Yost 905-AS vise is to securely hold objects, allowing users to perform operations such as cutting, filing, drilling, or assembly with stability and precision. It features a swivel base, enabling the user to rotate the clamped item for optimal access and working angles. The vise is designed for mounting on a workbench, providing a stable platform for heavy-duty applications.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 905-AS
  • Item Number: 10905
  • Jaw Width: 5 inches
  • Jaw Opening: 5 inches
  • Pipe Capacity: 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches
  • Throat Depth: 2-5/8 inches
  • Weight: 26 lbs
  • Jaw Strength: Jaws are capable of withstanding a load of no less than 1600 inch-pounds without distortion of the vise or any components.
  • Jaw Hardness: Hardened steel serrated jaws have a Rockwell C hardness of RC 52-58.

Usage Features:

The Yost 905-AS vise is designed for ease of use and versatility.

  • Mounting: The vise must be securely mounted to a workbench. Yost recommends using proper length and diameter bolts with flat washers, lock washers, and locking nuts. For added strength, an 18" x 18" x 2" piece of wood or an 18" x 18" x ¼” metal plate can be placed underneath the workbench.
  • Operation:
    1. Ensure the vise is securely mounted and the swivel base lockdowns are secure.
    2. Open the vise by turning the handle counterclockwise, ensuring not to exceed the rated jaw opening.
    3. Place the item between the serrated jaws.
    4. Close the vise by turning the handle clockwise until the item is snug.
    5. Continue tightening until the clamped item cannot be moved, but avoid over-tightening to prevent damage to the item or the vise.
    6. To release, turn the handle counterclockwise.
  • Swivel Base Operation:
    1. After an item is securely mounted, slowly loosen each lockdown on both sides of the vise by about ¼ of a turn counterclockwise. This allows the vise to swivel.
    2. Swivel the vise to the desired position for better access.
    3. Tighten each lockdown clockwise to secure the vise to the base.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes several safety instructions:
    • Always ensure bench tops are properly secured.
    • Use proper nuts, bolts, and lock washers for mounting.
    • Use a vise of appropriate size for the work object.
    • Wear eye, face, and ear protection when striking or using power tools.
    • Wear a dust mask or respirator when working with wood, metal, chemical dusts, or mists.
    • Wear restrictive hair covering and anti-slip footwear.
    • Hand-tighten swivel base lockdowns.
    • Inspect the vise for stress fatigue or damage before use.
    • Never use a hammer, extension pipe, or cheater bar on the spindle handle.
    • Never unscrew the movable jaw beyond its maximum specified opening.
    • Never weld the base to any metal object.
    • Never use the vise to press objects in or out.
    • Never use an extension pipe to tighten lockdown handles.
    • Never place pressurized containers or combustible materials in the vise.
    • Never wear loose clothing or jewelry.
    • Never apply extreme or prolonged heat to the vise, as it may alter structural properties.
    • If there is any question about a condition being safe or unsafe, do not operate the vise.
  • Work Area Conditions: The manual also specifies ideal work area conditions:
    • Dry floor to prevent slips.
    • Operator of sufficient age to operate safely.
    • Well-lit and unobstructed area.
    • Workbench properly secured to the floor or wall.
    • Workbench designed to handle the vise and workload.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Yost 905-AS vise.

  • Lubrication: The main screw should be greased regularly.
  • Inspection: Periodically recheck and re-tighten the mounting nuts to ensure the vise remains securely fastened to the workbench.
